The entire plot of Daredevil was a result of the events of Avengers and the rebuilding of Hell's Kitchen. Good design works within restraints and is often made better by it. Shows being written to take place within the MCU is not the crippling adversity John makes it out to be. However DC has had a continual TV presence for a long time so creating a singular universe for DC is harder than it was for Marvel who could basically brand and franchise everything right at the start. Different situations which makes different strategies make sense for both companies.

+eagc7 That's becasue it's SHIELDS JOB to deal with the superhuman stuff. Daredevil is just a guy, who isn't affiliated with the world government. It's like saying a show about the military brings up terrorism a lot, but a show about a suburban family doesn't - of course it doesn't, one is actually dealing with that subject matter, and the other isn't.

I feel that the reasoning behind Marvel Agents of SHIELD making so much mention of their connection with the movie universe in the first two seasons, was to pull the audience of the cinematic viewer's interest into the show... in my opinion they haven't failed in the slightest!! I love the movies AND the show, and can't wait to see how they'll continue to keep the movies and the show connected!!

John I think you forget that in Daredevil, the kingpin's main character motivation is to capitalize on the destruction of new york. He, literally, is trying to rebuild the parts of the city that were destroyed to have some sort of stake or power over people. So to say that show completely ignores the movies is pretty ignorant considering how the villain of the show is using the events and consequences of the Avengers as his motivation in the story. Furthermore the show acknowledges this throughout its run. Daredevil Doesn't ignore the movies like you say, rather it ties in both the films and the show in a clever way that's not overt like in Agents of shield. Just some of my thoughts man. I watch all your shows and appreciate the hard work you put in. Keep up the great work!

Even though the DC cinematic universe and TV universe are separated, they still do not have creative freedom. DC is still telling writers and producers of the TV shows that they are not allowed to use certain characters on TV.

@bajansamurai
@bajansamurai 9 жыл бұрын
+MWhaleK It is still all one universe; it has nothing to do with Daredevil's level of operation. He's just a starting hero with no reason to interact with them (yet). Not everything that happens in NY has to draw the attention of others. As viewers seeing all the ins and outs we imagine all the other heroes being aware other events are unfolding but it isn't meant to be the case. In the real world level: ABC had a plan worked out with Marvel to take the show a particular way, and Marvel's deal with Netflix was to keep it more self contained for now and see what the possibilities turn into. It's all the same Marvel universe, it's just that Coulson, by his ties to SHIELD, is more hyper aware of the Avengers and approaching issues that have global impact. Hell's Kitchen events can be assumed to not have made it onto his radar and if so, just as nothing more than crime disputes (for now).

What's the point though of separating them when Arrow specifically killed off Dead Shot because of Suicide Squad? They aren't allowed to use characters like Batman and Superman. Warner Brothers is still holding back the tv shows. Supergirl can't have Superman on it, but they going to come up with excuses of why he isn't there even though he should be. I think either way it holds back the creativity of the creators.

I don't see a problem with how Marvel is tying everything together in a cohesive universe. Show runners still have enough leeway to produce their own vision, who cares if they have to mention a tiny bit of whatever from the flims once in a while. Mentioning Thors name never hurt the show or the audience for that matter. Also it was nice to see just how big the repercussions from Winter Soldier were by showing it on Agents Of Shield and the severity of those events. The films are awesome, the shows are awesome. They're both simply awesome!

Yea, I'm going to have say Campea is wrong on two big points when it comes to the movies and TV shows being connected or not. 1. All because they are not in the same universe does not mean that the creators won't get interference from the movies. Arrow is the biggest example. Because that Suicide Squad movie exists, Harley Quinn was taken off the table, Deadshot had to be killed off, and the Suicide Squad supposedly can't be used anymore in the show. That's some annoying restrictions. Despite all the teasing, Green Lantern has been hinted to be taken off the table for the show as well because of movie plans. Who knows what restrictions may be forced on Flash once the movie is further in development? 2. What exactly do you want from an interconnected movie and TV universe? Isn't Daredevil the perfect example of how it can work? Each property, movie or TV needs to be able to stand on its own. Constantly referencing another property makes it secondary, or supplemental to the original. I think the reason that people like the shared universe is that it leaves the door open in the future for these characters to all come together. It may never happen, but the door is open.

@jadedragon216
@jadedragon216 9 жыл бұрын
Abdulrahman Agha To tell different stories under the same backdrop. Nowadays TV can draw on tremendous talent, and it's not the size of your budget but what you can do with it. Game of Thrones is a good example. If you want a true comparison, look at Daredevil the series and the movie. The tv series had a very small budget with not very well known actors while the movie had an blockbuster budget and matinee stars. Most would agree that the TV series was of higher quality both in terms of visual and acting.

There are pros and cons to everything. Peep how Arrow showed Harley but ultimately couldn't dive into her. Or how Deadshot was killed because of the suicide squad movie, or how booster gold and blue beetle were scrapped on CW because of the movies. I'm sure other ideas have been scrapped as well.

I disagree with John on this and I'll tell you why: DCEU is STILL tying the hands of the DCTV. You CANNOT use the same character on DCTV that DCEU has decided to use. Hence, Deadshot was killed off Arrow, Deathstroke has pretty much been confirmed "not available" in the future, Jerome was killed off as not to rival Leto's upcoming Joker in SS,etc. If they are so dead set on keeping the universes separate, then at least allow a DCTV version of Superman to appear on Supergirl, Harley Quinn to appear on Arrow,etc!

I think the hardcore Star Wars fans just felt disappointed because they have too high of an expectation from the original trilogy and the prequels don't deliver the same "Star Wars feel". Just like in video games, Final Fantasy 13 is not a horrible game by itself, but since I am a hardcore Final Fantasy fan from the old days and FF13 doesn't capture the same feeling so to me it is the absolute worst in the series. Not that it's a bad game, but that it does not resemble the Final Fantasy I love. I think that's what's going on with Star Wars fans.

Ok, here's what I think about the whole separate universes thing: in principle, I like DC's approach. However, they are making some mistakes. As many people pointed out, they don't really have total creative freedom. They can't use all the characters they want. If the universes are separate, why can't they have their own version of Blue Beetle, as they wanted to? Why not have their own Justice League? Another thing that worries me is Supergirl. The show keeps referencing Superman, but they never show him. Fans understand that these are two separate universes, but casual viewers (who, let's face it, are the big majority) might think that it's in the same universe as Man of Steel. And then there's that Krypton tv show. From what we've heard so far, it will be connected to the DCEU (that name makes no sense, but that is another story). So, some shows are connected to the movies and others aren't. Again, that might be confusing for casual viewers. Also, the shows aren't all connected to each other. Which is fine for Gotham, but Supergirl? Why is it not connected? Would it be that hard for them to at least reference "that guy in Central City"? Or for The Flash to reference "that girl who can fly"? If WB wants to keep the movies and tv shows separate (and, again, I agree to it in principle), then they should be consistent. Let writers use the characters they want. Don't mention Superman all the time in Supergirl (or at least show him, so that casual viewers can see that it's not the same guy from the movies). Keep all the shows separate from the movies. And connect them all (except Gotham) to each other. It's the lack of consistency that is starting to worry me. This being said, I am insanely excited for the upcoming DC movies. Bring them on. Just make the separation clear.

About rebooting the Star Wars prequels... When Disney obtained the rights to Star Wars by buying Lucasfilm, they came out a little later and gave a list of books, TV shows, movies, etc. they considered canon and pushed everything they didn't consider to be canon into its own category. I believe they also said that separating canon from everything else didn't necessarily mean that nothing from the "other" list could never become canon, only that, as of now, there's canon and there's "Legends". Am I remembering that correctly? If that is the case, and they wanted the flexibility to reboot the prequels at some point, couldn't they have put those prequels on the "other" list and just taken elements of those prequels that they wanted to make canon as part of a rebooted prequel trilogy?

Gotta love the backpedaling on AoS's references after all the complaining, yet still getting it wrong. "They do it less now, but in the first 2 seasons..." No. It was the first 2 episodes, period. And then saying Daredevil wasn't connected at all, then backpedaling mentioning the newspaper clippings, but still saying it was only that and nothing major. Apparently he missed that the whole reason Hell's Kitchen is in poor condition, and the repair of it is how Fisk came to power is because of the events of Avengers.

The only issue with remaking a classic is if the remake is good people tend not to go back to the original and if it's bad they still won't go back to the original. There are exceptions but I don't think "To Kill A Mockingbird" is on that list. Unless your doing it for school or if you care about the history of movies people tend to stick with movies that occurred during their lifetime and "To Kill A Mockingbird" falls outside of that for the younger generation.

On the whole Shared Universe vs Separate Universe method, they both work for there own reasons and I genuinely believe that it depends on the material you have to work with whether or not the method is best. I think it will work for Marvel because there are certain heroes who work great as side characters in a movie but may never actually work in there own movie however still need to be established so a TV series works for them, everyone knows pretty much that every single hero will be in Infinity War at some point, however a character like Daredevil could always appear in a Spiderman Movie

I get what you're saying John about the separation of the movies and the tv, however you're missing one keep point in many ways DCTV STILL can't fully do what they want because of the movies. For example, the writers of "Arrow" wanted to go further with the Suicide Squad and making them a bigger part of the show. They had to axe that because now Suicide Squad is becoming a movie. They are not allowed to have Batman be in the television universe, which is why we got Arrow in the first place and even Gotham. I'm pretty sure there are a bunch of other restrictions placed upon them as well. So sure the separation might allow for a little more creative freedom, but in many ways their hands are still tied.

I disagree with John as I don't think Daredevil changed much due to Agents of SHIELD. The simple reason is that there's absolutely no reason for Daredevil to connect to the Avengers at this stage of his story. He's one man, with fairly low level superpowers, running a tiny law firm, and he's directly tied to the events in a limited part of New York. Why would they ever have considered writing in direct tie ins with the global, even cosmic in Thor's case, Avengers? He's doing nothing that would make them take notice of him, and he has no reason to seek them out. In fact referencing the Avengers just makes it all that more apparent how small and intimate Daredevil's struggle with Kingpin is. That notion that the show changed due to AoS makes no sense. The Netflix shows are street level and were always intended to be, at least until an eventual team up with the Defenders. The Netflix actors does seem to get movie appearances put in their contracts and I hope that Marvel will use that some day, but that's of course far from a done deal.

I think the issue of Agents of Shield is that it was always intended as a side piece to the movies which is why they always mention the avengers because it is bound to the movies and dependent on them. Daredevil on the other hand was always meant to be a very independent story that happened to take place in the MCU. So I do believe shared tv and cinematic universes can work. Agents of Shield only shows that companion pieces to movies don't work.

John, you do realize To Kill a Mockingbird was a book first. The book was the driving force of dealing with racial issues of its time. The book was controversial. The movie brilliantly followed suit, but it is the book that is still taught in schools. The book was the inception that created Atticus Finch.

I gotta disagree with u again John Campea. I love how Agents of SHIELD intertwines with the movies. It deserves to do that. Coulson was in the movies. And SHIELD was in the movies too. It makes sense. Daredevil doesn't make as many references cuz it isn't as entwined with the movies. Just my 2 cents.

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is now separating themselves from the rest of the MCU." Except for the fact that they've been building up to the Inhumans film for the past season and a half now. Except for the fact that we're getting conflicts between S.H.I.E.L.D., HYDRA 2.0 and the ATCU which are setting up both the Inhumans and Captain America: Civil War films heavily. We're exploring a completely new part of the universe (which some fans assume to be Ego the Living Planet) which can either tie into Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Avengers: Infinity War or, again, Inhumans. They're not distancing themselves from the universe, in fact, they're the glue that keeps the universe together. Without Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the MCU would be a bunch of films desperately trying to tie up loose ends and failing hilariously. Also, having Zack "good cinematography doesn't need good writing" Snyder helm 6 out of the 10 projects in the DCEU does NOT mean intelligent writing.

eagc7 Says who? They're both in the MCU, they kinda have to. They could be legacy characters, or just keep the big players out of the MCU and save them for the film, slowly build up to them with lesser character in AoS. There are so many opportunities, and let's be real, AoS isn't going to last until that film's premiere anyway.
@levischorpioen
@levischorpioen 9 жыл бұрын
swanpride Since the events in the MCU pretty much happen in real-time, my prediction is this: They're using AoS to show the progression of the Inhumans, let them become a fully fleshed out race of superhumans and then let the film deal with the Royal Family. So yes, of course they'll set the whole thing up in a way that you don't need AoS to understand what the film is doing (after all, AoS dealt directly with the begin AND aftermath of both Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier and people who only watch the films understand perfectly what's going on), but it'll help and make the overall experience so much better.

John Campea fails to understand that Kevin Feige HAS STATED that the movies will reference the TV Shows, the question is when? I still believe that with Daredevil, Kingpin, and Luke Cage in New York by 2017, at least 1 of the 3 characters is going to show up in Marvel's Spider-Man because it makes the most sense and it's not a stretch. These Netflix actors are also contracted to appear in MOVIES as well. I don't know why Campea still utters that Marvel Movies and TV Shows are splitting when he also defends that the Inhumans movie isn't canceled and that he thinks Daredevil is a really good show but now calls Marvel TV a failure. #Hypocrite

Haha I just had a thought, starwars prequels CAN actually be remade because of this : What is a movie if not the retelling of a story in video format? Soo, they can keep the story somewhat the same, but with better acting, better effects, less green/blue screens and maybe less Jar jar? Or atleast a better Jar Jar if they HAVE to include it.

I agree about the creative disconnect that DC has, but I disagree that Marvel has failed in their shared verse. They haven't flexed the possibilities much mostly due to costs of bring a movie actor to the TV shows, but the connection is an interesting benefit. BTW, there have been discussions of a possible future of Supergirl crossing with the other CW DC TV shows. You can't expect an immediate crossing, since Supergirl hasn't settled into her own pace yet.

John, You are absolutely right about the TV/Movie shared universe being a bad idea. Besides your reason that creative restraints are added by it, there is also the problem of somewhat forcing TV watchers to watch several movies just to keep up with their shows (and vice versa), and the problem that it forces the movies to play to the lowest common denominator when it comes to costume design; Agents of Shield's inhumans look ridiculous and should have no place in the MCU when the Hollywood inhumans eventually look far better.

I agree that a tv show shouldn't be focusing on how they are connected to the films and shoving it down our throats like AOS S1 but I loved shared universes it just feels more like the comic books where your favourite characters can interact with each other Flash and Arrow are such amazing shows and the crossovers are done so well and Arrow had constatine which was so awesome, I would like more of that within the DC tv universe instead of so many different universes however I do believe the movies and tv for DC are best seperate as they have already established their own incredible universes

The downside to not connecting the DCTV with the DCEU is you get fans that get pissed off that their Flash is not the movie Flash. It's fine if there aren't many people watching the show, but it gets a little rougher when there are six million people poopooing on Ezra Miller years before his debut as the cinematic Flash, while demanding that Grant Gustin be given the role. I think Grant is a great actor(that scene when The Flash was saying goodbye to his mother had me so verklempt, fuggedaboutit), and I also think that people are smart enough to understand and accept that Grant could play The Flash existing in a universe separate from the tv universe, the fact of the matter is that Ezra Miller already landed his role, and while Grant works for the show it doesn't mean he would be the right fit for the movie universe. Don't prejudge Ezra Miller years before Justice League and his own solo movie.

I have to disagree with John about that the connection of the Marvel movies and the tv series is a failure. Granted some of these references was a little much (and some of them even unnecassary), but personally they didn't bother me. Also don't forget; Coulson is actually an original character from the movies, so direct references from the latter is bound to happen one way or the other. And the only character from the movies who turned up in Agents of SHIELD so far is Sif. So this 'banging in the head' thing is a little far fetched in my opinion. On a side note: Daredevil (and the other Netflix shows) has no direct connection with the movies, because the respective characters of that show doesn't work for SHIELD and only operates in New York City, whereas the Agents of SHIELD are operating within the entire world. THAT is also why Daredevil didn't have so many references in his show compared to Agents of SHIELD. However, I am pretty sure that will change, once Avengers: Infinity War comes out in theaters... Either way, I think that the MCU (movies and tv) connection is great. And with two new potential shows coming out as well, it will only get better...
