Russo Brothers Interview Avengers Endgame and Cherry with Tom Holland
With Avengers: Endgame arriving in theaters on April 26th (like you didn’t know!), I recently sat down with directors Joe and Anthony Russo for an exclusive video interview. Since the studio and the Russo brothers are trying to keep everything about the storyline on Endgame under wraps, it’s a different kind of interview than your usual junket discussion. I could only ask spoiler-free questions, and when it comes to Endgame, pretty much everything is a spoiler. However, I don’t blame the studio or filmmakers. The fact is, the MCU has been building towards this film since Iron Man first arrived in theaters over a decade ago and I couldn’t be more excited to see what will happen when Endgame unspools in theaters around the world next week.
During the interview, the Russo brothers talked about the three-hour runtime and why it isn’t longer, deleted scenes, the incredible VFX accomplished on their Marvel films, if they think there is still a stigma about comic book movies/superhero movies that prevents them from winning the bigger awards, if they might do another Marvel movie down the road, how they designed the Endgame ending, what was the final VFX shot they needed to finish, their next movie, Cherry, with Tom Holland, and a lot more.

Lucas made up the Original Trilogy as he went. He's admitted it. And when you watch the films again, it's obvious. Vader is clearly NOT Luke's father in _A New Hope_ , and Leia is clearly NOT his sister until it's revealed in _Return of the Jedi_ . Honestly, the revelation that Leia was Luke's sister all along is horrible writing, but everyone's fine with it because of rose-tinted glasses. _Star Wars_ has always been stupid and pretending like it isn't only serves to set yourself up for disappointment when any new film released doesn't turn out to be the Second Coming.

luke cage the VFX branch of the academy don’t look at the nominated movies the way we do. A shot that looks amazing to us could very much be a bad one to them. A friend of mine works in that field and tells me that for example it’s a sign of weakness to put too much fog 🌫 in a vfx heavy scene and make it dark because the filmmakers are trying to save money on a big section of the screen. Now all I see is fog in MCU movies. 😂
@JBrotsis1
@JBrotsis1 5 жыл бұрын
Salieri Amadeus I get you point of setting the movie in the dark (Venom, Godzilla) and I understand the fog, but to say all you see in MCU movies is fog is either an over exaggerated, blatant lie or you need to get your eye sight checked. 80% of IW took place during the day and the other 20% was in space. The notable VFX in IW was how realistic Thanos looked. That scene where he’s exiting the portal first into Titan...he looked like a real person.

Perri and Kristian are the best interviewers at Collider. I’d rather see them do this interviews. They go in with set questions they want to ask but they also listen to the interviewees and go in different directions if they feel that’s where the conversation is flowing. I feel like Frosty keeps asking the same obvious questions and in other videos often fishes for scoops and spoilers that he already knows he’s not going to get.

This is what I love about the Russo’s directing the IW and EG. Whedon cried all the time about being exhausted after Ultron. Saying he couldn’t do another film. Russo’s come in and do 4 movies, 3 of which had more characters in them than Whedon’s Avengers 1 & 2...and they’re still eager to make more MCU films. I always thought after Avengers 1 I didn’t want anyone but Whedon to direct those movies. Now...I’m glad he’s gone and we got Anthony and Joe.
@RandomCarrot2806
@RandomCarrot2806 5 жыл бұрын
That's not really a fair comparison to make. Whedon wrote and directed Avengers 1 and 2 on his own while The Russo brothers are a partnership + they have 2 writers helping carrying the burden too. They make a point of mentioning the 2 writers in a lot of interviews and all the commentary tracks for the movies include the 2 writers too. It's 4 people sharing a burden versus 1 guy carrying it on his own.
@JBrotsis1
@JBrotsis1 5 жыл бұрын
Anders Hansen I know the Russo’s use the same two writers but as they’ve said in interviews, it’s all 4 writing the movie in the same room. I understand that it’s 4 minds vs 1 but I know Marvel didn’t restrict Whedon to write and direct. He could’ve asked for more writers and that’s on him. Regardless...the MCU has been in better hands with the Russo’s instead of Joss.

I think it's because of Fiege's (dunno about that spelling) interfering in Avengers 2. I don't really know if Whedon would've been better or equally good for handling Infinity War and/or Endgame BUT I have heard that Fiege learned from what happened with Ultron and maybe even Marvel/Disney in general and they allowed for more "riskier" variations from the Marvel formula. Trusted in their directors more. Not that Ultron was bad, but it really didn't have that magic plus some scenes were just out of place because Fiege wanted the Infinity saga to get rolling and I think that's where the frustration came from. Just speculation tho for the most part.

The screenplay of IW is perhaps one of the best ever in the genre From it's structure to characters to plot threads, the stakes were all great and it was criminal of the Academy to not give the writers the credit they deserved and the russo's directorial effort was monumental. In their own way the Russo's will go down in the annals of great producer directors with John Ford, Kurosawa, Scorsese and many other greats. The four Marvel films they've directed are the bright backbone of that universe. And it's a largely magnificent universe. They've made superhero films a deeply complex artform. That's no mean trick.

2:20 The interviewer spoke the right question that I cannot move on until now: why Avengers Infinity War was robbed of that Oscar for Best Visual Effects, losing to that mediocre First Man with some of its nominees already past Oscar winners! Give chance to Marvel, please! 😭😭😭😭😭

Well tbh, the visual effects in first man were stunning. Is was seamless how the CGI was integrated into the movie

I had no idea that Endgame was this long! They were serious about tying up loose ends! My local theater only has 3 showings a day if you want to only see it in IMAX. My choices were 11am, 7pm, and 11pm! Yet the whole weekend is sold out, even the handicap seats! I’m dating myself but the last movie I watched in theater for 3hrs was Dancing With Wolves! I fell asleep twice and the movie was still playing! I vowed never again but here I am! 🥳🤩 The last movie I saw at 11pm was Sleepers with Brad Pitt. We didn’t get out there until 2:30am! That takes commitment! Shoutout to all my Avengers peeps! My only issue is that the second the movie is out you have people while still in the theater posting spoilers! You can’t just say “spoiler alert” then have “Here are all the Avengers who died in Endgame”! Then put Cap or Ironman as your thumbnail! So now you have two choices see it opening night or stay off the internet until you see it! Ijs

So see it in IMAX on a second viewing. When it comes to these huge big-ticket movies, I always prioritize just seeing the movie first. If that means I can actually get IMAX seats, then that's great. If not, fine.

Ty I hear you! It’s just my theater has the bulk of their screenings in Digital only or 3D. I just saw a post that someone leaked the first 10mins of the movie. It has major plot points in it. The Russo brothers are begging people not to repost because it ruins the experience of fans! I’m assuming the leak came from the premier in London last week but it doesn’t matter. We’ve been waiting on this movie for 10yrs! Yet people can’t hold out for 9 days. Nothing against you it’s just a HUGE pet peeve of mine. 🤦🏼‍♀️

The Russo's can just keep on lying from now on about anything because nobody believes what ever they say anymore. Then can just say, "No, we're not making any movies anytime soon" then boom!, 2 more movies are already in the making.

I actually audition for that movie cherry that he’s talking about! The Audition was not great I told the lady I can speak Arabic but I can’t read it. It also was a different dialect I told them. I Ahead of time but they still said to go in. I’ve never felt so embarrassed at a audition I drove two hours for Nothing the casting Director was so disrespectful!
