@@captcrais101 Jim Carey stole the role a lot better by adding when he was the riddler therefore it would've been a lot more easier going into the joker role. I now heard he's reprising his role in The Mask so it would have been nice to see him as the Joker however in The Mask he will steal that part again for sure.

@@leelohaskin7941 Maybe briefly, but he was in a lot of big movies(The People vs Larry Flynt, Charlie's Angels, Alice in Wonderland, Beowolf) well after that lawsuit. Any actors out there would actually be appreciative because Glover's lawsuit helped actors from their likeness being used going forward without their consent or the consent of their estate if they had passed away. Clauses like that have been part of SAG's collective bargaining agreements.

Broader audience doesn't care about artistic way of movies, the movie should be relatable (character and emotion wise) / should have typical moral values, as we see Kubrick's movies aren't the highest grossing but Marvel's are. Because they appel to much larger audience and do what it IS MADE to do, which is ENTERAIN THE BROADER AUDIENCE, i love Scorsese and marvel btw, the mistack is to compare those two, it's just like comparing DC and Marvel some people relate to something some doesn't, doesn't necessarily mean others are idiots. In Scorsese's way Marvel may not be that enjoyable and that's quiet alright but that doesn't mean Marvel is bad or for that matter any comic book movies. Peace

Honestly, he put it very well. A cinephile would genuinely 'get' what Scorsese meant when he said these are not cinema. He wasn't putting down marvel movies, but the look and feel of not only marvel movies but also DC movies lately have been fairly 'plastic'. One needs a certain time period to recover from an epic experience . Harry Potter became mythical and so did star wars and Jurassic park because they were a few movies spaced out over a couple of decades. Scorsese criticized the kind of movies this system of movie diarrhea produced when they release 25 movies in 10 years. Imagine how it would've been if Marvel was made with great cinematographers and meticulously built practical sets, shot on imax or 70mm and condensed into 5 movies primarily covering Tony, Steve, Thor and Black Widow. You wouldn't have needed 20 movies to set up Thanos. An example within Disney itself is Pixar. Since they are not allotted even 10% of what Marvel are, the entire Pixar group focuses on making ONE movie. And thats why every single pixar movie is 10 times greater in terms of story than the marvel ones. Theres a reason why Tarantino hasn't made 25 films in his career. Look at how they are killing star wars by making a movie every year. Theres no patience. I'm sure if you ask Marty specifically he would definitely consider movies like Dark Knight as pure cinema.Screw me but I honestly get what he's saying. Everyone these days just take these opinions personally before giving any thought but this guy made Taxi Driver. And that's why I will respect his opinion and at least give it a thought

Pretty spot on. I was mostly bummed when Disney bought up the MCU and Star Wars. I was really hoping for something a little darker and grittier with more character development. The MCU in particular is completely over saturated. I don’t think they will hold up to time very well at all, not like the dark knight does, but more like George Cloonies Batman lol.
@orange1809
@orange1809 4 жыл бұрын
Marvel released 2-3 movies in each year for 10 long years - I don’t know what you are saying about not having patience. All the movies have different voices and take on it as they are made by different (mostly indie) directors. Just because it’s not a dark, mobster type of movies doesn’t mean it’s not worthy to be called cinema. Art is subjective and I think people who think they’re the genius of film world is being so elitist and pretentious about this. I honestly think all these talk is just about money and clout - some of their movies is just not getting the attention like the a marvel franchise. I say make great movies since they seem to be revered filmmakers, and the audience will follow.

When these movies are bankrolled by our defense department, they're literal propaganda if not overt. No, Scorsese didn't imply propaganda. He literally meant what he said. Those movies have nothing to do with the art of cinema. The camera has no purpose, there is no mise-en-scène, no composition, the cinematography is awful, the editing is bad. None of the tools of cinema are used to tell the story in an interesting visual way. And the fact that nobody understands what Scorsese said is indicative of the lack of knowledge from people of how cinema distinguishes itself from other art forms, which it's ok if you don't, you're not stupid because of that. But you can't deny that Scorsese's statement is objectively true. Imagine comparing Edgar Allan Poe to the chick who wrote Twilight. Nobody has a problem admitting Twilight is bad, but how many understand why? How many understand it is bad not because of its subject matter (a gothic romance) but because it's badly written? And it's not impossible to make a good movie from a superhero comic-book. Example: Sam Raimi's Spiderman 2, in which each scene has more hearth and cinematic ideas than any movie in the MCU. And I have never read a superhero comic book, but I'm pretty sure they're way more cinematic than the MCU movies.

The English Patient is an interesting choice to pick. I too thought any movie of that time would be a better Best Picture Oscar winner. I can watch Trainspotting (not up for Best Picture in 1996, but nonetheless) 40 times in a row and find it entertaining, while appreciating it's artistic merit. The English Patient is a snooze fest, with no real relatable characters. Hell, You could sit through Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, probably Kubrick's most slow and tedious film, and find it far more entertaining than The English Patient ever could be. Barry Lyndon at least is irreverent and snarky. I think Marvel Movies are not art, but they are cinema. I can sit through them, but they have a message, not a plot. Which is what Scorsese is talking about.

Keith Gabbard I do see art that way, it inspires me in numerous ways however if it does not entertain the deeper meaning is not relevant. You can add deeper meanings to support entertainments relevance but in the end it’s entertainment. I can argue that sports have equal value with figures like Jackie Robinson and bill Russell. Those men were important cultural figures who gave people hope and a deeper meaning but again sports are merely entertainment. If art affects you emotionally it is serving it’s purpose to entertain. Crispin Glover isn't wrong about Marvel movies being propaganda. In 2017 The Independent published an article on this. "It is a matter of public record that the Pentagon has had an entertainment liaison office since 1948. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) established a similar position in 1996. Although it was known that they sometimes request script changes in exchange for advice, permission to use locations, and equipment such as aircraft carriers, each appeared to have passive, and largely apolitical roles. Files we obtained, mainly through the US Freedom of Information Act, show that between 1911 and 2017, more than 800 feature films received support from the US Government’s Department of Defence (DoD), a significantly higher figure than previous estimates indicate. These included blockbuster franchises such as Transformers, Iron Man, and The Terminator......When the CIA established an entertainment liaison office in 1996, it made up for lost time, most emphatically on the Al Pacino film The Recruit and the Osama bin Laden assassination movie Zero Dark Thirty. Leaked private memos published by our colleague Tricia Jenkins in 2016, and other memos published in 2013 by the mainstream media, indicate that each of these productions was heavily influenced by government officials."

Glad he won that lawsuit too bc that is creepy af they put basically his face on another actor. A lot of shady stuff by gale & zemeckis like I believe they hired stoltz just to kill time til they could get first choice fox ( which tg they did bc fox is Marty. ) stoltz gave 1 interview in 94 saying he was told to play it serious & they only did one take on anything close up on him. If that's true thats dirty pool. Its sandbagging bc then they went to the producers & said " look hes not getting the laughs " if they told him to be serious then that is so messed up. Stolz claimed he would have played it funnier. Also I think they got turned off when they did the read through & the cast was asked what did they think. Stolz said " I think it's a tragedy. Marty has different memories then his entire family. " I never thought about it that way. I guess I just cant take it too seriously or not a lot would fit. His parents were wealthier so would they really live in the same house albeit much nicer inside if George was so much confident & successful. Also would the older kids still live home since they also were more successful. Dave went from working at a macdonalds to an office wearing a buisness suit. Would biff really be working for George after he bullied him for years & tried to assault Lorraine?? I know it was the end & they had to wrap it up & wanted to show everyone at once in a scene to show how different Marty's parents & older siblings were bc of George & Lorraine being totally more confident happy & in love people. Also I always had the impression Marty found doc maybe to work for him & looked to spend more time w/ doc than his dad or older brother bc they were kinda losers.

The mcu movies didn’t just base themselves off of characters and story’s that came from comics but the whole comic structure. Each movie is an issue of a comic and those issues lead to crossover events like avengers and infinity war. Some people may call them lazy or repetitive but each movie is needed to build that comic feeling. At the end of the day that was the goal of the mcu to make movies like comics not to just make comic book movies and clearly it’s resonated with comic fans and a larger audience so I think they did their job. Yes it’s a new way of storytelling and older people might see it as lesser quality to what came before but it isn’t worse just different and I don’t think being different classifies something as “not cinema” or art.

He's right about the propaganda of Marvel's films. However, it's not quite the way some people may think it is. For instance, while the earlier comic books they reference justified war and were pro-America propaganda, a lot of the films today are more oriented around Liberal propaganda. However, one movie I wish they would have referenced, which kind of subverts a lot of typical propaganda standards is The Winter Soldier, and to a somewhat lesser extent Civil War. I wish they would have asked Glover what he thought of those films, because Winter Soldier was ultimately a critique on Orwellian-style surveillance turned on its head (and literally used to kill select people) while Civil War deconstructed the necessities of State-controlled super entities. Not saying that either movie was a masterpiece, but they definitely touched on some interesting concepts regarding the gray-area morality of the industrial military/surveillance complex and how it can/is used to undermine the safety of citizens.

Manuel Romero - Life & Art Except they have nothing to do with the “propaganda” or “police state” drivel he’s going on about; with the exception of Cap, they’re a bunch of characters that a cool dude named Stan Lee and some equally cool artists made up about things that interest them,... in the 60’s. Not the fucking 30’s or 40’s. The irony is, the Joker movie is a Scorsese film rip off and the biggest propaganda film of the bunch. Another “artist” spouting off regarding things he’s misinformed about...

its a nonsensical opinion. comics are LITERALLY art lol. art as you must know can be anything. and when your art is beloved by millions of people worldwide no one can discredit you.

He means that Marvel movies are shit. He just don't wanna be blunt about it. It's about time someone like Scorsese spoke up about this shitty marvel movie trend, but he needs to stop beating around the bush, because people are confused on what he thinks. Just say it how it is! Superhero marvel movies are the worse trend in cinema history. They have ruined cinema for me. It's too much.

I think Joaquin channelled his inner Crispin for the Joker. I can see Crispin playing this role the same exact way.

He didn't say "comic book movies." He said Marvel movies. Big difference there.
