Add onto that--conservatively--a $70m marketing and distribution budget (it was probably higher, as is usual for such films, but I'm low-balling). At the LOW END the movie needed $400m JUST TO BREAK EVEN. It only received $245m in its worldwide run, meaning it lost a good $150m or more for the studio.

That said, the original movie was also plagued with production woes, but it happened to have a director who wanted to be as true to the source material as possible with commercial pressures, and of course the incredible creature effects of the Jim Henson studios. They captured lightning in a bottle and made the 2nd best comic book movie of all time.
