*Winner of the Cousins Band Award: Most Inspiring Young Band Piece
Colliding Visions
Brian Balmages
Grade 1.0
Series: Begining Band
Lyrical melodies meet powerful fanfares in this emotionally-charged work that tells the true story of a world premiere and a band program's final performance. Sweeping harmonies push the threshold of the typical young band sound before the music charges forward in spirit and excitement. A final section slowly moves toward silence, leaving the audience in wonderment as to what will lie in the future. Mature sounds for young bands!

A gryffinpuff green soul A Band ran out of funding so this piece was the last they would play at their final concert written by the person it was Assigned to
@codew
@codew Жыл бұрын
@@kaycee5796 "This might possibly be the most ironic piece I have ever written in my life. It began when a music program received a grant to commission a new work. The work was to be the highlight of the year for the students. But before starting the piece, I received notice from Rick Palese, band director at Prairie Hill Elementary in Cary, Illinois, that the district had a budget shortfall. The grant itself was not affected, but one fo the mandated cuts was the band program, grades 5-8. So began the process of writing a world premiere for a band that would no longer exist after its performance. Even more ironic is that it was written as the final piece for their concert. It would not be the last work the band would ever play. The title, Colliding Visions, focuses on the important issue facing the arts everywhere. This piece serves as an important reminder that we must all share our passion for music with others. When people look to cut funds, we should state with a firm and unified voice that it should not be from the arts. The arts are crucial to our culture and to our own well-being. Further, this adaptable arrangement comes in response to COVID-19, a time when music programs once again are fighting to remain in schools. If ever there was a time when students needed music in their lives, that time is now." These were the program notes from Brian Balmages.

My middle school band is thinking about playing this for our spring concert this year in remembrance of one of our clarinets that sadly passed this year. She was also my cousin, and I dearly miss her. I'm a trumpet myself, and when we sightread this for the first time for practice, it sounded great. This song represents her, soft and sweet in the slow parts, yet energetic and upbeat in the fast part. Fly high, Jocelyn.

The story behind the song: a middle school (or high school idk) named program was going to be cut. They asked this Brian Balmages to come in a nod help them compose a song for their last concert. The concert was literally the last thing the band played before it was cut Or something like that idk

@thatfoxyguy7747
@thatfoxyguy7747 5 жыл бұрын
@Kyra Hunter So Brian Balmages was asked to make this for a school band as the last piece in their final seasonal concert. While writing he learned that the district was going to completely cut the music program after that year so the piece he was making would be the last song the band would ever play. That is why it's called colliding visions, as the district does not see the importance of the arts like the band does.

this song makes me sad for so many reasons. a school near ours had a budget cut and you know what that means... they had to cut out the music program. the last song they played was this one. what made it sad was the ending of this beautiful song. when you have to say shhhhhh at the end, they did that because they were silencing the band. everyone. the music program was shutting down, basically dying. this song really makes me want to cry

HOW CAN ANYONE HATE THIS? the song is really sad, Brian's elementary school had a band, but the school couldn't keep it. This song is basically a "WHY YOU STUPID PEOPLE" through music

+Christy Chacko actually, it wasn't Brian's elementary school. It was Prairie Hill School in Cary, IL. We commissioned the piece and Brian wrote it based on our experiences.

That's why it stops so abruptly. It's so energetic, then it stops into a slow ending. That symbolizes them shutting down.

It isn't, instead it is the visions of the district and band that collided, and that was the last time they played from the high amount of money, so that is why they said " "shhh..." " At the end
