📚 History:
Colmar is a historic city in Alsace, France, that has changed hands several times. It was first mentioned by Charlemagne in 823, and became a free imperial city in 1226. It joined the Décapole, a league of ten Alsatian cities, in 1354, and was ceded to France by Louis XIV in 1679. It was annexed by Germany after the Franco-Prussian War in 1871, and returned to France after the First World War in 1918. It was occupied by Nazi Germany in 1940, and liberated by French and American forces in 1945, after a fierce battle known as the Colmar Pocket.

You can wander around the old town and see the Gothic cathedral, the 16th-century Maison Pfister, and the 111-headed Maison des Têtes. You can admire the half-timbered houses along the Lauch River, in the area known as Little Venice, and take a boat or a walk along the canal. You can explore the Bartholdi Museum, which honors the creator of the Statue of Liberty, who was born in Colmar. We went to the Alsace region for Christmas, and it was an incredible experience. The towns are wonderful, and with the Christmas decorations and markets, it felt like a fairy tale. Colmar is a gem ❤
