I'm born in Colmar and living here since the day I born, and you talk about my city so nicely, thank you very much for this video! :) Colmar is amazing, it's a real pleasure to live here. If you want to come, make sure you come before jully in summer or after August, because you will have a lot of tourists during this period. From September to the end of November, it's very calm, no tourists, and it's more pleasant to walk in the streets. The time we have the most of tourists, it's in December, you can't walk in the chrismas market, unless you go during the week AND ABSOLUTELY NEVER THE WEEKEND (trust me). By the way, you mentioned the storks as our symbol, wich is true. Few years ago (around 50 years ago), they almost disapeard from Alsace, because of the hunting, the electric lines, etc. So Alsace made this her priority, by opening special parks to preserve them. Today, they are out of any exctiction risk! If you want to see real Storks, you can see them in small towns in Alsace (not really in Colmar), they built their nest on our roofs (it can goes until 500 kilogramms, yeah, really. So some structures are here to help the roofs to not break) :). One of these park is "Naturoparc" in Hunawihr, and you can see many wild Storks and other bird species. Make sure you come one day in our beautiful city, you won't regret it ♥

Let's be honest. 90% of the city is ordinary at best, even ugly in a lot of places. Only the city center is really pretty. The people there have totally abandoned the Alsatian architecture. Now, they build soulless apartment blocks everywhere. But that is never shown by the influencers. Only the 10% that is pretty is shown. The 10% won't last forever. It's only buildings remaining from the past, that are not eternal. When there's nothing left, who will come to visit the city? Probably nobody.

Enjoyed this video. We were lucky that our daughter lived in Basel for 4 years and we have been to Colmar many times. You did miss one of the don't of Colmar. If you are there in September do not miss the "nouveau vin" signs in the countryside. New wine sold from the small vintners must not be missed. Sold in old plastic bottles if you don't bring your own bottle. The flavor changes every day until you have drunk it all. Don't forget to leave the top loose.

Thank you for speaking about our beautiful city! It truly feels amazing seeing so many foreigners be interested by it :) Colmar also has many annual events like the Festival du livre or La foire aux vins which takes place in summer and is very popular here. About the Christmas markets, I recommend not buying the hot wine from the stalls because they're extremely diluted with water and not worth the price. For eating (if you forget to book a restaurant beforehand), brasseries are the way to go like the Amandine next to the gothic church, no need for reservations and it's pretty fast serving. Last but not least, don't forget to visit Kaysesberg during your trip which received the prize of most-loved city in France a couple years ago, it also hosts an annual D&D event ;)

If you want to make the trip worthwhile: Along the same road, there's a great Belgian "muscles and fries" restaurant (Léon de Bruxelles) and an Asian restaurant (WOK 168), which has a great all-you-can-eat buffet at lunchtime. It's also very cheap. Oh, there's also a bowling alley/laser game Park close by ;)

Is Colmar too far to be a day trip from Paris? Should i instead stay for the night?
@MrDenis80

Should be doable, from Strasbourg to Paris the TGV needs about 2 hours, I think. But I would advice you to find a place to sleep closer to Colmar and visit locations like Strasbourg (France), Mulhouse (France), Freiburg (Germany), Basel (Swiss), Europa Park Rust (Germany)

Just a heads up, for vegetarians or vegans, it's almost impossible to eat in Colmar. Even salads are usually served with meat or cheese. I live near Colmar and I have spent hours walking around the town looking for vegetarian friendly restaurants without any luck. Now, I usually go to Subway or buy a salad from Monoprix (supermarket in town center). Also the tap water is awful. I've wanted to move to Colmar in the past (and would still like to), but the taste and quality of the tap water has stopped me from doing so. I don't own a car, so carrying gallons of bottled water back from the shops is not an option.

Video with plenty of information. Little Strasbourg is right to describe Colmar. It's a charming city. But any city with some canals don't have anything in common with Italian cities.

Is there a public transportation from Colmar to there? I don't drive and planning a 3 days trip in Colmar and it would be quite dissapointing if I didn't swing by.

The architecture looks more German than French, because it borders with Germany. Plus Colmar is bilingual. Even the food is more German than French.

Sadly, the Germanic Alsace (Elsassisch) dialect is dying, but a lot of people speak at least some standard German. I have German heritage so I'm not biased - I think Colmar is nicer than Strassburg, but all of Alsace is beautiful, especially the villages on the Alsace Wine Route.

Because Elsaß is historically Germanic, for over a millennia. France first stole it from the HRE in the 17th Century, kicking off centuries of tug-of-war & victimizing the inhabitants which is why (as Mark mentions) they don't consider themselves French nor German but proudly maintain a local identity. 1/4 of my ancestry came from there, and they were distinctly Germanic.

@@scottlindsly It's very sad the way that the French government has not supported the Alsace culture at all, with the Germanic Elsassisch dialect not being taught in schools. Only one in ten children now ever speak it, and it will soon be dead. Even 30 years ago you could hear it being spoken in Colmar quite frequently, but nothing can save it now.

I live in Colmar but I will never understand why tourists like it so much, Colmar is not more beautiful than any other Alsatian city. And there is nothing to do for young people, it's a pretty city yes but as a resident I find it dead and boring

It's called resident bias;) I never liked my hometown until I backpacked for almost a year + lived almost 2 years abroad. Colmar is beautiful but I agree that Strasburg and other towns are also beautiful in Alsace. Colmar inspired many movies and has something idyllic that most towns don't have in Alsace.
