This was our second stop on our Germany trip to find the best city. We were pleasently surprised by how nice the vibe in Cologne was. Also: "Himmel und Äd"," Halve Hahn"... never heard of it! What do you think, which dish would be your favorite? Which cities should we visit next?

@sophiemarie18042 жыл бұрын

Willy Millowitsch was one of the best known "peoples actor" of Germany especially Cologne. Maybe Americans know him from the Chevy Chase movie "National Lampoon’s European Vacation". He played the old man in this stereotypical german village where the Griswolds eat and sleep and the hosts don't know them at all. 🤣🤣🤣

1:43 that's the Heinrich-Böll-Platz, a public square and at the same time the roof of the Kölner Philharmonie concert hall. The problem, if people walk over the square, it makes some noise on the inside of the hall and the fancy classical musicians don´t like it. So they hired people to close the quare several times a week, costing about 100.000€ per year.

Himmel un Ääd is a typical poor man's food. The Apple sauce is part of it and stands for the Himmel. The mashed potatoes stand for the Ääd (Earth). The blood sausage is just the side dish. On your way south you will come to my home town, Bonn. I'm a bit biased, but I think Bonn is the best City of the Rhineland.

My hometown ❤️ I live here now for 1 1/2 years. The history of my family starts here & I always wanted to move here.If you really consider living here I really recommend you to check out the different “Veedel” (districts). They are all so different! Not just from the way the live is there or the people. There are some districts with more nature or parks. In the summer everyone is relaxing and meeting there. The rents can be very different. When it comes to this: you can be very lucky, but often it really needs some time to find the right apartment. I’m living in Nippes and love it. The Autobahn is near, the public transport takes you where ever you want & you reach the city center & Dom very quickly, the Rhein is not far away & you have many little restaurants, café’s & store’s/ grocery stores around you. There is also a market from Monday-Saturday.

Not sure if during pandemic that is happening. It gets very crowded. Did I say it's free. Fantastic venue with great sound. You probably walked across the ceiling of the Philharmonic. Welcome to my home-town. I love this city, but let's face it, the regional cuisine isn't as great as in other areas. Himmel un Ääd has been explained by plenty of people, and yes, the apple-sauce belongs in the mashed potatoes. If I remember correctly they serve it separately at Frühs. The thing you liked about the Gouda on the Halven Hahn is the fact that it usually is medium old to old Gouda. Much saltier than the regular "jonge Gouda (young gouda). And Deana fell into the "deadly Kölsch trap" Yes, Kölsch tastes relatively light compared to other German beers (A friend of mine from Bavaria once called it "Bierschorle") but that's tricky. Kölsch has 4,8% alc. and Weißbier is around 5-5,5 for the most part. Not so different. I've seen many overconfident Bavarians who ended up sleeping in the streets because they underestimated the alcohol level. =:-))) Yes the Crane houses are ridiculously expensive plus: when there is a flood, your parking garage is under water and if it really gets bad, you can only get to your fance apartment via boat.... So glad, you liked it here, but yes, real estate prices have been exploding lately. Not as bad as Hamburg or Munich, but bad nontheless.
@TheNewTimeNetwork4 жыл бұрын
Himmel un Äd has the apples on the plate, or as stated in the menu mixed with the potatoes. Rheinischer Sauerbraten isn't complete without a side of apple puree (it's also stated on the menu). I've heard some of the residents in the crane houses have complained about breathing in the ships' exhaust fumes. Guess what, that's what happens if you live *above* one of the world's busiest rivers.

Früh Kölsch is my absolute favorite beer but I might be biased as it was the first beer I tried at age 16 😆 Stollwerk chocolate is the chocolate of Köln and there is a factory and tour center on the water below the cathedral if remember correctly, The most fascinating thing there was a giant gold chocolate fountain you could dip wafers into on your way into the factory tour. I’m hoping you also visit Stüttgart on your quest to find the best city which is an amazing city for arts and literature! Hey, the two of you! If you're checking out cities for possibly moving there, be sure to not only see the tourist attractions. Go to some actual neighborhoods (if, for lack of more time, at least the trendy, young, student ones). Cologne city center directly by the river is pretty boring (except for obivious attractions as the cathedral, museums, and views, of course). It's the districts around the inner ring street where Cologne is most happening: Südstadt, Sülz, Belgisches Viertel, Ehrenfeld, just to name a few - both for living and going out. You should give Düsseldorf another chance, too. It's on both sides of the Rhine as well - with, actually, a very beautiful (if posh and snobby) district (Oberkassel) on the bank across from Old Town. Should you come back to Düsseldorf, for more typical living quarters take a look at Unterbilk, Bilk, and Flingern-Nord, too.

1. Yes cologne is the town where it all started with the Love Locks. And if you tie a rope arround a magnet and throw it ito to the river and pull it up again you should have 1000's of keys hanging on it. 2. Off course that was Willi Millowitsch. He was the owner of the very famous Millowitsch Theater in the middle of Cologne 3. I wonder that you didn't take the chance of a "Brauhaustour" through several "Brauhäuser" arround the mid town. You can book cologne underground where you can see a lot of historical stuff which is left back from the roman empire and you visit certain original Kölsch Brauhäuser and also a lot of historical stuff of the "Kölsche Braukunst". 4. Rheinischer Sauerbraten is the best you can get. Original home made Sauerbraten is made of horse meat. 5. Cologne cathedrals constuction time is 600 years ... just for info. 6. The area of these crane buildungs is called "Zollhafen" But how can you just visit cologne and leave Aachen behind. Aachen is one of the oldest cities in germany and the cathedral and the old town hall is much older than colgne. ;-)
