Hi Jasmine! I had a similar situation happen to me in Mexico. My phone completely died never turned on again before I even got a chance to check into my hotel. I was traveling alone, but I had cash. I exchanged pesos at the airport & took a taxi to my hotel. My hotel arranged for a driver to take me to a local shopping mall to purchase a phone. It’s imperative that if you are in Latin America you learn the basics. Learning Spanish is worth the time & effort because it will make your experiences so much smoother. You’re traveling to Latin America a lot & it’s only going to help you. I’m so happy that you are safe. God bless you & happy birthday 💕🎉🥳

I’m sorry that happened, our phones are really our life lines. I can’t believe I only started using a local SIM on my last trip out of the country, before that I relied on wifi or whoever I was travelling with. I’m glad that at least your phone wasn’t lost or stolen while out of the house, I imagine you would’ve been stressed getting back home. I really enjoyed this vlog a lot, how you all went to the market and the dancing also. It almost made me want to cry actually since I was born in Costa Rica, and I guess I just felt the connection through your camera lens, the soul of the country and people really comes through. Also reminds me how my family lives in Latin America. It’s always good to remember the privileges we enjoy while living in 1st world countries :)

Challenges such as yours build character and make for great testimonies. As a solo traveler YOU are your own contingency plan, navigator, source of survival, etc. I’ll never forget being stuck in Portugal because the airline company thought I made a fraudulent ticket, only to find out that my suffix was the issue. I wasn’t that strong of a Portuguese speaker, but I marched up to the office of TAP airlines and explained what could be the issue on their end. They profusely apologized and upgraded me to business class. Moral of the story, LEARN the LANGUAGE.

Assuming you got your phone from the Verizon store or someone major like that, I'm sure they have those stores in Columbia as well and they could have helped you with your phone or giving you a replacement or something. Or you could have gone to the American embassy for help in contacting your family, etc.

There is no Verizon or T Mobil or At&t in Colombia. Bad if you lose you phone there. Will ruin you trip for sure. I bring two phones keep my USA phone in the room safe and go out with a local Colombian phone. Like $8 a month to hook up a unlocked phone there.

Sometimes I think I am just too boujie to venture into some of the things you are doing, but hey…you never know, right? As you said in another video, being in a different environment often takes your mind off of the things that seemed to bother you so much before. Maybe I will experience that. I’m kind of surprised you changed plans based on your phone situation honestly. I get we can be reliant on our phone for so many things that get us through our daily but I think the lesson I’d take away is not to be so dependent on a device that was not always available at one point in life. I’ve been out of the country without a phone before, my phone got left in a taxi, it taught me not to NEED it. Hopefully that doesn’t sound to “mom” but I only say that bc it seems that it ruined a good part of your travel which is sad to see. Keep enjoying your travels love!

But, essentially I travel with only 2 physical cards. 1 of my cards was stolen my very first night in Medellin NYE so I was left with only 1 physical card. I keep no more than $1,000 on the card at a time just in case something happens to it. My digital cards are used for bigger transactions and when I need to transfer money over, I just go into my banking app. At the time of my phone breaking, I had about $200 left on the card that I had on me. Luckily I was able to get in touch with my dad in enough time so he could buy me a plane ticket out of Colombia.
