I agree the departure process is quite stressful if you're running late. Hopefully the new terminal will resolve the issues. Hope to see you again in Sri Lanka, maybe when the new terminal is running..

You mentioned Silk Route. It has a separate entrance and you dont have to go thru the hassle you went through. It has separate check in and immigration, and you get VIP treatment. Free for Sri Lanka airways business class passengers and others can buy this for about $75. You can search about this service on line and would have written a more positive review if you went through that route. There are hardly any countries a Sri Lankan can travel without a visa and I think they have to spend time checking visas at airline check in and immigration which takes time as it is same line in immigration for SL passport holders as well as foreign passport holders. You can get a porter for about $5 to navigate through the chaos and get to the airline check in counter. The entire departure process is chaotic and needs a lot of improvement. The existing terminal is over crowded and they are in the process of constructing a new passenger terminal which is waybbehind schedule because of the economic crisis.

Well this an airport where you definitely need to arrive 3 to 4 hours before your flight.
