Let’s go! There’s some logic that any unmanned Star ship moon landing arrive with supplies and systems for future access. A planned way station.

I still believe SpaceX should pursue an unmanned HLS and let someone else, bring the astronauts. Work out that scenario and if it makes sense transition Starship as HLS, but years pass the return to the moon. Side question, do we know if starship’s mass will be a problem on the regolith, eg sinking differently under different pads and topple over?

Adjusted for inflation, the Apollo program cost around $280 billion. If we get to moon for any less than that I would be surprised, since what SpaceX is proposing to get to the moon is a lot more complicated than what NASA did to get there.

Bezos is getting NASA Money and he can't get ONE rocket off the ground. At this point in time America would be as well off to farm every thing out to the Chinese. You would get more for your money than some Plastic Mochups of what a Blue Origin Moon Lander would look like, if it actually existed.

@dennisleas89962 сағат бұрын
Some other companies/organizations that miss significant milestones on their gantt charts: NASA, ESA, Roscosmos, ISRO, JAXA, Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, ULA, Firefly, Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, Virgin Orbit (RIP), Stratolaunch, ArianeGroup, Kuiper, OneWeb, Sierra Space, ABL Space Systems, Astra Space, Relativity Space, Rocket Lab, Rocket Factory Augsburg, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Thales Alenia Space, ... Many of these (and others) are so far behind that they just throw away their gantts
@frankmcgowan9457Сағат бұрын
Gantt charts are all drawn based on WAGs, hopefully SWAGs. If you're doing something you've never done before, odds are you're going to underestimate the time required to achieve each milestone. If you're doing something NO ONE HAS EVER DONE BEFORE, your Gantt chart will be an exercise in wishful thinking, anyway. Things take as much time as they take. Try to hustle it up but, remember, management will always think you took too long so take the time to do it well. Then, management will be surprised how quickly the next project in the series (there is almost always a series of related projects) gets done because you can re-use next time what you had to invent last time...

@biomechanique68744 сағат бұрын
It may not 'land' intact and even less likely to be upright. To mitigate this it would be prudent to have a cargo of useful equipment and/or materials that can be salvaged and utilised by later missions - far more preferable to just dumping more junk on the moon.
@zoranocokoljic89275 минут бұрын
Sorry, but in order to get to the Moon, SpaceX needs to A) launch spaceship into orbit; B) launch another one short timed after; C) perform docking maneuver of two ships; D) perform fuel tel transfer; E) repeat B-D 10 times; F) reach the Moon and G) land on unprepared surface with a ship that has no landing gear yet and cveery high freeboard. Considering that average time between two launches is at the moment three months, they might get into orbit this year, but docking tests are probably not on the schedule for this year. (Not to mention that SpaceX never launched anything further that LEO and doesn't have communication and control equipment capable of reaching the Moon)

Your figures for the SLS costs and launches unit cost are way off reality. Note, SRBs as a cite are $70million ea. Then, tanks $100million, the ICPS and EDS are interchangeable add $100million, that comes to 340mil, add Orion and Service modules gives you, with job overruns, nearly $1billion ready for flight machine, fully fuelled. Note, Nasa funded Dragon for $9billion over 10+yrs for ISS service. SLS is commuted tech.
