The “Colonel Bogey March” is a popular march that was composed in 1914 by Lieutenant F. J. Ricketts (1881-1945) (pen name Kenneth J. Alford), a British Army bandmaster who later became the director of music for the Royal Marines at Plymouth.

I had heard this tune as a 'marching tune' while seeing the movie 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' for the very first time with my Serving Lieutenant Colonel father in 1984. Later, as a Cadet - and still later ; while serving for over 23 years in the Army - AND EVEN NOW as a 'retired Major', i whistle this tune whenever i have a long walk....... Can only add that i have a 35 years long association with THIS 'tune' - and it is almost a part of my life. The latest is that my eldest daughter recently sent it from Canada as my 'birthday gift'....... HATS OFF

Those are baritones, not euphoniums.
@Matuku35
@Matuku35 7 жыл бұрын
Could only see one euphonium, no baritones. The bell is too broad for a Baritone, and the fully compensating tubes of the eupho are clearly visible. Also in 4.34 to 4.41 you can see the middle finger of the left hand is held over the fourth valve, which is also only in a euphonium. Sometimes Americans call Eupho's as Baritones. If you look up the original brass band music that part was written for Euphoniums, and in some places the 1st baritone plays along with the eupho, In military bands the tenor sax also plays much of the counter-melody.

I recognize the song and to see not only a band marching to the music but also everyone involved, powerful! I enjoyed watching the march. I move my screen up so I just see the legs and feet and these young men know how to do it. Thanks for the music, thanks for allowing me to see and hear music from another part of the world. I live in Peoria, Arizona. The internet has really opened a new door to quality entertainment. Thanks to all who put this together to bring it to the world. Very well done! - Dennis Zinke

That's actually the point of a marching band. In the old days they'd keep the troops moving at a reasonable pace by syncing the rhythm of the music with the step, not to mention it made the long treks less boring with a little uplifting music. Only problem is that the enemy could possibly hear you on the trek. Pretty neat though!

The one and only Royal Marines in the whole world .. And of course are British that serve our Queen Elizabeth and it makes me very proud to be British as there is no other but us.. Not only are they great at playing musical instruments but they are very brave soldiers that go wherever in the world to fight for Queen and country.. Who else but the British Royal Marines.. The only other braver soldiers who are also British and feared all over the world as the best of all are the Grenadier Guards who protect our Queen and have done so for 350 years, and they still wear the same uniform as then.. So proud of them all..

Gurkhas? Btw the Grenadier Guards don't wear the same uniform as 350 years ago..and why the Grenadiers and not the Coldstreams etc. Plus i would say that the Paras and SAS are also ever so slightly known and on a par with RM

I don’t think it was this particular band, but I had the privilege of meeting some RM Buglers (the ones playing drums on the front rank) recently in Hamina, Finland, when we took part in the Tattoo there. The “Royals” knocked everyone else into a cocked hat. Utterly brilliant. Best Military musicians in the whole world
