For anyone who is interested, the two marches are 'Duke of York's March', and 'Mollendorf's Parade March'. The marches switch at 2:18.

I am mystified by the coordination between the Guards. Two questions: 1. How long (how many steps, even if marking time) after a Guard has completed their Left Form (once they're all in straight lines) does the right guide shout "Right, Sir!"? It seems to vary. 2. Also, how many paces behind is the following Guard? (i.e., how many paces is it from the moment Guard 1 is commanded to Left Form until the moment Guard 2 is commanded to?)

I’m not too familiar with the exact paces myself however I do know that once the Guard infront which is forming (for example No.1 Guard) has marched away, the guard behind moves forward and seemingly takes its place while it’s troops form. This it to avoid the corner clogging up basically and allows the whole process to go smoothly. There is a correct term for this I’ll get back to you if I find it. As for the distance between the guards I don’t know, but when they are in lines facing horse guards I belive there are 33 Guardsman on the front and rear rank, so I can assume whatever the dressings are for that number of Guardsman is the distance between the Guards as they form at the halt.

To answer question 2, No1 guard’s left guide gives ‘Right Sir’ on paces 27 & 28, officer gives ‘left form’ on paces 29 and 30. (There are 30 paces in total between each guard), after which no1 guard marches forwards 14 paces and marks time until the signal from the right guide of ‘right sir’ informs officer commanding to give command ‘forward’. No2 guard marches forwards 6 paces and then marks time as no 1 guard continues its slow march to the next left form.

@@MrCardinal1965 Thank you soooo much, MrCardinal. It will take me a while to sort that. I know the commands, just reviewing tapes while counting the paces is going to be a challenge. Ah well. such is the stuff of life. I am presuming the count starts immediately once the word "Forward" is uttered - is that correct?💂‍♂

@@zephyr755 Thanks. The pace count starts when the ‘Field Officer In Brigade Waiting’ (The Lt Colonel on horseback, who commands the parade) gives the words of command ‘Guards will march past in slow and quick time, by the left, slow march’. No’s 1-5 Guards will march as follows: No 1 guard-30 paces, No 2 guard-60 paces, No 3 guard -90 paces, No 4 guard-120 paces and No 5 guard-150 paces to the marker indicating the first ‘left form’. No. 6 Guard (and No 7 Guard if present), who are the L shape on the parade have to carry out a rather complicated movement, as they are already standing at right angles to the other five companies and facing the correct direction of advance. They do not need to execute the movements ordered from the words of command: ‘No’s 1-5 guards about turn, at the halt right form’ - ‘No’s 1-5 Guard’s will advance, about turn’, which are used to get no’s 1 to 5 Guards facing the correct direction before the march off. The words of command given to get them ready for the march off are: ‘no’s 6 and 7 Guards close order march!’ (The rear ranks all move forwards one pace closer to the front rank). ‘Move to the right in 3’s, form 3’s’. (the odd numbers from the front and even numbers from the rear ranks will take a step backwards/forwards and a step to the right/left respectively, with the remainder of the rear ranks all taking a step to the left to form 3 correctly dressed ranks. The next word of command is ‘right’, at which the whole guard turns to it’s right. Once intervals are established, the Field Officer then gives the word of command, "Guards will march past in slow and quick time. By the left slow march." No. 6 Guard will march forwards in the direction it is facing, left turning on the 30th pace and then whilst still on the move forwards reforming into two ranks with the correct interval maintained between the Guards companies. Hope this is helpful.

@@MrCardinal1965 Great stuff. I was aware of the FOB's command, and the "Move to the R in 3's" for 6&7 (if applicable) Guards and also the subsequent command "Right". But I didn't know the detail of formation, nor the command before it. I am going to format my next question as a new question. Hang on MrCardinal1965, the next one's for you, and with thanks to Benjamin Whiley for his superb film which elucidates the subtleties of this majestic bit of drill

What are the captains orders when when facing the queen or slauting her what is their commands
@benjaminwhiley8608
@benjaminwhiley8608 4 жыл бұрын
If you mean when they march past the Queen in quick time they will say. “Escort to the Colour” (The group) “By the Right” (Get your dressings from the right) “Eyes Right” (Give your Compliments to the Queen) then once they pass the box he will say “Eyes Front” and will carry on marching. This is how they “Salute” when In QuickTime however when In Slow time the Ensign flourishes the colour and the Officers salute the Queen. The same command is given.

I do believe its the Major who gives the commands as on the start of the march past the Captain goes to back to the left/right of the Sergeant. But when they are forming before they eyes right the Ensign and Captain comes to the front.

@@imgreenfromroblox6237 The "Captain of the Escort" is a role on Trooping the Colour held by a person with the *rank* Major. The "Subaltern of the Escort " is usually held by a person with the rank of Captain.

@@imgreenfromroblox6237 when referring to the Trooping, the "Major of the Parade" is the second in command to the "Field Officer"
