Colonial knot vs French knot
The colonial knot, like the French knot, is used to fill in forms when embroidering or to add volume to embroidery details (plant core, plant inflorescences, berries, moss, etc.). It can be found both in ordinary embroidery with threads and in embroidery with ribbons.
The execution technique is different from the French knot, as seen in the video. But visually they are very similar: the colonial knot is a little more voluminous than the French one, but only slightly.
Many embroiderers prefer to use the colonial knot precisely because it is easier to do, but this opinion is very subjective. For me, for example, it is even more a matter of habit. But dissolving it in case of an error is definitely much easier. Another observation: the colonial knot is stronger on the fabric and does not fall apart.

Колониальный узелок vs Французский узелок.
Колониальный узелок, как и французский используется для заполнения форм при вышивании либо добавления рельефа деталям вышивки (сердцевина растений, соцветия растений, ягоды, мох и прочее). Его можно встретить как и в обычной вышивке нитями, так и в вышивке лентами.
Техника выполнения отличается от французского узелка, как видно на видео. А вот визуально они очень похожи: колониальный узелок немного более объемный чем французский, но незначительно.
Многие предпочитают использовать колониальный узелок именно потому, что его легче выполнять, хотя это очень субъективно. Для меня, например, это даже больше дело привычки. А вот распускать его в случае ошибки точно гораздо легче. Еще из наблюдений: колониальный узелок прочнее на ткани держится и не разваливается.

Excellent demonstration - thank you! I had never even heard of a Colonial Knot until today. I must admit, visually they both look virtually identical to me, but it is always good to expand ones embroidery knowledge.
