As former colonial nations face a moment of reckoning over the actions of their forebears, DW News Africa looks at how colonialism has shaped the continent’s past, how it's impacting the present - and asks what needs to change so that the future looks different. We meet a man in Cameroon who's passionately tearing down statues of colonizers; get an update on the efforts by the Talai and Kipsigis people in Kenya to win reparations from the British government for land that was taken from them in colonial times. And we talk to a psychologist about decolonizing the African mind.

@Teringventje You mean the slave markets that opened up in Libya because NATO decided to spread some democracy destroying the balance in the sahel in the process, guns flow south into Mali causing the Azawad secession movement which are quickly taken over by CIA sponsored Jihaddis, France rushes in to save their uranium mining operations and guns from that war spread into Northern Nigeria bolstering Boko Haram, more American money for ISIS and the Arab spring under the guise of humanitarian support for democratic resistance in Syria flows into that conflict, a legitimate president overthrown in Ivory coast by the French foreign legion because the opposition leader promised more access for France, France sponsoring a sectarian slaughter in Cameroon against English speaking regions, or do we go a little South and talk about the Chinese money supporting one side and US money supporting the other side of the endless South Sudanese conflicts, US cash funding mercenaries in the DRC which flows downstream to militias protecting coltan and cobalt mines on behalf of foreign interests, UN soldiers getting caught smuggling mineral ore in APCs in the katanga region, a weak puppet government for France getting overrun by rebels in central Africa leaving the whole country broken, African Union troops being ordered to stop fighting Alshabaab in Somalia so the US can start a drone war that has radicalized even more Somali youths, a british woman leading terror strikes in Kenya, some of that left over ISIS donor money flowing into Islamists groups in the DRC, Anglola and Mozambique, Chinese cash buying off generals Zimbabwe and essentially taking the country. Africans are the least of Africa's problems.

One thing as an African descended person I am very happy about is that the colonizers did not stay in Africa. Except for South Africa. So many other natives lost their lands forever, the Native Americans, the native Mexicans aka Aztecs, the Incans, the Aborigines of Australia. We need to realize how blessed we are to still have our homelands be inhabited by us. Being African is something that we should be incredibly proud of. We have a lot of potential to turn African countries into a world superpower.

Alright here is how it is. I'm not saying what those people were doing was good or trying to justify it. At some point In human history, some cultural groups would have key technologies that would help them have an edge on everyone. It could have been Africa or native Americans. Do you know what they would do? Go off and do human things like enslaving and conquering. It just happened to be the Europeans that got those key technologies. Cause if a European nation saw another European nation that was vulnerable they would conquer it too. Because back then it was everyone vs everyone. There are no good guys or bad guys in history, just different parties and people with conflicting interests with little morals involved on all sides throughout history. I will say though that the west, in general, is the leader when it comes to morals. Being the first ones to ban slavery and leading in a multitude of other civil rights. Also, I finished high school recently I can tell you since 6th grade I've learned about colonialism

@@afri.canhistory4227 Zimbabwe did not have any western sanctions on it in the decades following the socialist revolution and enjoyed the full support of the US. We were the first nation to open an embassy there. Enter Mugabe as Executive President in 1987 for the next 37 years... It wasn't until 2001 that his practices became so unbearably loathsome that the US finally withdrew from multilateral financial support. Even then the US continued to support them through USAID and in 2019 rendered $318 million in aid to various programs. What sanctions do exist are targeted against individuals in the Mnangagwa Administration. And comparing agricultural output necessary to support today's populations with same during the era of the slave trade? I'm not sure where that even comes into the equation other than the obligatory mention of the practice to insulate against any criticism of the here and now..

The reason some former colonised countries became communist was because when they demanded independence, the colonial powers wanted to retain control of the colonies through neo-colonialism. They selected leaders whom they could control usually through corruption. These leaders had to agree to allow the companies of the colonial powers to continue to own the land, industries and businesses after handover. They jailed popular leaders whom they cannot control. Many of these leaders died in prison. They introduced democracy to legitimised their selected leaders. Communist party was banned and the elections were usually rigged. That is neo-colonialism through democracy. Some of the popular leaders who escaped took up arms to fight for independence. Most of the population were poor and landless hence they supported leaders who were communist because they promised to take back the land and return the land to the people. The nationalist were supported by the former colonial powers, elites and landlords. Civil war broke out in these countries between the nationalist and communist. It was independence war for the local people many volunteered and willing to make the ultimate sacrifice against an enemy with overwhelmingly superior firepower. China, Indonesia and Vietnam won their independence through war and became communist. Later the communist in Indonesia were purged after a military coup backed by US and became a dictatorship. More than a million communist and civilians were massacred. The nationalists lost the war in China and fled to Taiwan under protection of US navy. Taiwan became a dictatorship and thousands of communist were purged and exterminated. Vietnam fought for independence against the French and later US to finally win and unite the country. 3 million Vietnamese died in the war. In Malaysia, the communist continued to fight against the new government who had negotiated for independence from the British under neo-colonial terms. The government later bought British companies which own most of the land hence recovering the land and redistributed land to the poor. This erode the communist support and it was dissolved in 1989. Korea would had driven out US without massive reinforcement and firepower. US advanced towards the Chinese border so China had to enter the war. The colonisers and their collaborators who fled to US or the part protected by US try to regain control by interfering and intervening in their former colonies. They continue to do so to this day through relentless propagandas in their news networks and supporting internal dissidents. China is not dwelling on the past and prefer to focus on the future. This continue even though most of the communist countries have developed their own systems and are all members of UN.

Jesus Christ Europeans never exploited Africa. People compare Belgian Congo to all of colonial Africa. After Leopold the Belgian government took over and the Congo became one of the most literate countries in Africa. European colonies like Algeria, Tanganyika, and many others costed more to upkeep rather than make new profit. Europeans didn’t even colonize Africa for resources, it was for pride. The French began colonization in Africa to gain prestige because they had just lost the Franco Prussian War.

It's interesting to learn about how colonialism has impacted other societies and nationalities. As a colonized indigenous person myself, I can see the similarities in our response to colonization and In a unusual way I feel connects me to your people. It's disheartening to hear that there hasn't been an apology. I hope your people get the justice you deserve.

Those tea plantations should grow food in Nambia instead. Food for the people. Cotton Narcotic herb plants Sugar Tobacco Cocoa And cotton and tea should not make priority. Coffee or other pleasure stuff. Food for Africa should take priority. Grow grains and vines and fruits and vegetables and leave lands for animals to eat grain. Not some leftover money plantation left by Europe.

I am for the liberalization of Africa, and I feel that the colonization was a dark moment of humanity and of course its legacy and outcome is the current inequality and more poverty. BUT! What would you say to those sons of Africa who were born and raised in Africa, but they are immigrants from other parts of the world (they don’t have to be descendants of settlers)? Would you think that is it alright to kick them out? What’s the solution in those cases?

Well done! At the end of the day we were dupped, over powered, and exploited. While seeking retribution (e.g. apologies, reparations, etc.) is important, it is equally important (IMO) to overcome our own weaknesses which led to the current state and to create social / societal defenses to prevent it from happening in the future. Given the state of the continent's and diaspora's economies, marshalling sufficient resources to overcome our social and economic disparities will be a challenge, and take years to complete. Therefore we must teach our children how to overcome the weakness of disunity and selfish interests, and to teach their children for generations to come until this work is complete.

In my opinion discussions about the colonial past and the need to decolonize the mind are truely important to be able to build a self-determined future in Africa. But what about the actual role of China in Africa? Is the commitment of China on the African continent advancing Africa or could it be a new kind of colonization in the making?

We need more attention to the Matter in the West Me as a european saying that is important Those crimes and this injustice is just something people have moved on here instead of reversing the damage done by our ancestors. Thats why the old empires dont care about repairations because they have forgotten about it. Many Things that have been made wrong by the victors of the World wars and the cold war are shockingly ignored by Most Western people wich is just horrible. This is a rethinking process that requires rethinking our ways and See that we are All equal to each other and that we have to fix the mistakes of our ancestors because only this way we can reconnect with each other as partners The crimes done to the african people and all victims of colonization should never be forgotten and we as the West have the duty of accepting this and making up for it by give the people what Was taken from them and help them forge their socienties without abusing this Position for New colonialism like france and such

Im not sure i understand this, but i believe i heard that colonialists bought African land for cheap in the past, and if this is the case, then it is really the people who sold it who should be blamed. How can this be redistributed to the locals? If they have built a big business on that land, then i kinda feel like they will have to be paid for the land + the value of their business. I do understand how much this situation sucks though, as here in Norway, we have a lot of hydro power, and Germans have been buying some of these power stations. I really dont like that this happens, but once my country has sold it, its no longer ours, and unless they want to sell it back, then there is nothing we can do about it. If i sell something, and later demanded to get it back, then people would just laugh of me...
