Mountaineers are always free. Love this state. Most underrated state in the country. It’s my home. It’s in my blood. The people here are hard working, loving family people with good morals and values. Please come visit. But please. Don’t try and change us. We may seem a little different to people from populated areas. But that’s what makes this state so special and refreshing. Long live Wild Wonderful West Virginia.

We went to the museum and mine this summer. I was impressed when the tour guide told us that the man had to fill up the carts with coal they dug out by hand and blasting. If one piece in their 10 tons wasn't real bituminous coal, the foreman could reduce, and often did reduce the miners pay that day to next to nothing. Heart breaking, back breaking work.

"It's alive, it's breathing - just underneath the surface". What an exceptional way to convey the ambience of this location and to tie the community's identity to the natural resource that literally produced it! The way that you seamlessly transition from historical background to modern day circumstances and attractions is really laudable, as far as I am concerned. As always, there is superb video, reflecting the natural beauty of the region. I loved the Tamarack Marketplace description (I'm guessing at the spelling since the close captioning spelling seemed weak to me) and I'd likely spend a day at least just wandering! Thanks for the background on Native American presence in the region.

We were just on a visit to West Virginia in July and august. Wow, what beautiful state. We went white water rafting down the gorge. While visiting, we saw the exhibition coal mine. We LOVED IT!!!! We saw the pioneer village. Listened to the blacksmith and the school teacher. But, the coal mine experience was priceless. Hearing the information coming from a lifelong coal miner was unforgettable. The museum upstairs is perfect to see before the visit into the mine. It really helped bring the experience to life. Also, I want to mention your gift shop. I bought peach, pumpkin, cherry and apple butters. We also bought some jams and jelly. Love the butters with my cottage cheese in the morning. I will cry when it’s gone!!! Thank you for a wonderful time!!!!

Born and raised in Beckley. Was there last weekend for family. It's beautiful. So grateful to have grown up in such a beautiful state. My mum's place is just a few streets over from the town being driven through. It's a great place for ghost tours too. I did a few of them when I was younger with the guide because I loved them so much. Across the street from Alfred Beckleys house, (which is also on the tour) he is buried in a cemetery. In that cemetery a witch is buried. She is buried in the corner of the cemetery, her gravestone black and facing opposite of everyone elses. She was born on Halloween and her date of death was Oct. 30. The town shunned her for being a witch. I think she just made herbal medicine.. Her name was Kiskus. Anyway. Really cool place. Beautiful buildings, nature, and people.
@marilyncausey9348Ай бұрын
Searching on Find-A-Grave, I found a man named Kiskis in Wildwood Cemetery in Beckley. His headstone is a cross, now discolored and broken. Maybe her grave isn't cataloged on Find-A-Grave? Editing to add: This man's grave is the grave attributed to a witch. He was Lithuanian and Catholic. He was a miner in WV, sustained terrible burns and lived five days in agony before he died. From what I've read, ghost tours in Beckley now tell the urban legend first, but then add the correct information about the actual man buried there. Have you seen for yourself that the grave is turned the opposite way? In Christian cemeteries, graves are situated so that the person would rise facing east. Next time I'm in WV, I hope to get by for a visit to Wildwood. Thanks for sharing; I love this kind of stuff.
@_sav_ageАй бұрын
@@marilyncausey9348 hi I have seen the grave in person and that it is opposite facing. It's quite intriguing. Thanks for the extra history!!! And the name may have a bit of different spelling. There is also an above burial area where a man's head was stolen once.

You lost me with Anthracite. The New River and Pocahontas Coal Fields except the weathered outcrops produced low and mid volatile BITUMINOUS coal for coking and ultimately steel making. Anthracite will not coke and is only good for thermal applications. Anthracite is only found in mineable seams in eastern Pennsylvania. And I have spent many days underground in the region collecting coal samples.
