I think you can consider using the cardboard backing of the paper pads or a transparency film to protect the page behind. I think inktense might be a better choice if you really want dark colours.

Hi Carol. Angle brushes are great for getting into corners. Also, this angle brush is quite firm and that's better for watercolor pencil. Round watercolor brushes can be a bit flimsy sometimes.
