As much as I'm impressed with your drawing skill, I'm even more blown away by your pedagogical skill. I've watched many of your instructional videos, and each time find myself saying, "Man, this guy is a born teacher." Such intelligence and clarity in the way you break things down and you use the visual tools at your disposal (i.e the photos with overlays of drawing stages). These videos have been so helpful, and I'm so grateful for your skill and your generosity in sharing it with the rest of us. Thank you!

I really find the same thing, so often great artists are awful verbal communicators! But John is a pleasure to learn from.

Excellent! I like the big secret; trees in the back are darker and define the trees in the front. Amazingly articulate teacher.

At time stamp 43:06 one of your participants shares using the grayscale setting on her smart phone to see value. What a great tip! I didn't even know that function was on my phone. It may be easier and more accurate than ordering green gel sheets from England! After all, it's already in most of our pockets!

11:54 "Stand in front again?" 11:58 "nice T-shirt" - it's fun how this also displays contrast and values in action.

Thank you, Jack. Another excellent video. I wanted to also thank you, as I have just completed my first year of Nature Journaling. My primary media is graphite and colored pencils. I had some frustration that I wasn't following your journaling techniques exactly. Then I discovered that I was making journaling my own, and not just copying someone else. That helped me to advance. The difference? My nature interaction is primarily bird watching and photography. But I take many photos of other nature objects I find, looking for questions and connections. I take some landscape photos for the "Landscapitos." Then I come back home and do my nature journaling in the evening at my desk where I have a steady surface, comfortable chair, and lots of light. My photos give me enough subjects for a week or more of drawings in my nature journal from an hour or two of observations.

Your imbedded videos aren't showing up on your blog any more, Jack. So I've come over here to your KZbin channel to watch.
