What is your favorite way to use crumb quilt blocks?
@danahammes13865 ай бұрын
As a border for quilts mainly, even in some bags but not solid all over. I think they should be used to bring out the color of major color in small amounts. Have you heard Marie's Srapy Quilting? This is how she does.

No haven’t heard of her. There are loads of ways to use crumb quilting - I’m sure we all have our favourites!

I identify with the way you use every scrap of fabric. Love the way you teach, so clear and concise. Fewer words but well chosen and necessary. I have Scottish ancestors from the Galway Bay area. My Mickle/Muckle family came to Virginia about 1790. They migrated westerly through Tennessee and Arkansas, settling in the Arkansas Border with Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Really enjoy improv style blocks to purge my brain. Haven’t done in a while so thank you for reminding me to do a few again. I keep bits and pieces and sew to paper to create longer strips for borders and zipper pouches.

Glad you liked it! I don’t know how to throw anything away😂. Even the tiny trimmings that are too small for crumbs will end up as stuffing for something.

I don’t buy new yardage, but piece scraps given to me by quilt guild members. My priority is to conserve fabric, so I attach pieces that closely align, and trim accordingly. Color is the second criterion for me. Initially I sew them together even when I don’t love the color juxtaposition because I’ve found that they create interesting visual effects that I wouldn’t consciously consider. As the pieces grow I decide more consciously. I don’t often sew the same fabric/color together, but I have no rules against it. Guild members are eager to get rid of mountains of beautiful fabrics in many shapes and sizes. I have thousands of squares cut by others. A unifying background comes in the last stage, when matching colors and values can visually transform pieces into a cohesive design element.

So fab that you can enjoy using what your guild members don’t want - win win!

Even though I said that I didn’t enjoy the modern improv, I do make a lot of scrap quilts. I have made crumb blocks, strip blocks, log cabins all in your crumb quilt style. My first was in 2010 after my husband died and I could not concentrate on anything. I started sewing random bits of blues together and eventually had a lovely quilt. I donate all of these to my guild’s outreach project. But …..now I have started a Hunters Star using my batiks. Lots of precision there!!

Yes this kind of thing is definitely good for distracting the mind. Very soothing once you get in the zone of it. Good luck with your Hunter’s Star!

I use tiny crumb scraps to make pieced lavender bags for my wool items and crochet projects. So far my bigger scraps are saved until a project beckons and we have moved (mustn't start more projects until I have a new sewing room). Love the videos.

Camera angle is good... right into the needle ))) Yes we see yellow red and blue red as different but close reds. Slivers on the edge are important seam structure. ) Its all alchemy ))) An entire single color quilt made like this would be wonderful.... like your "white" one. The texture is amazing. FUN no-thinking PLAY!!! When adjacent bits are the same color, the square structure dissolves ))))

My favourite way is to colour coordinate my blocks and include my solid scraps. When I have the number of squares I need I then arrange same colours on the diagonal, placement determined by number of squares. For example, if most squares were blue, then that would get laid down as the diagonal centre. If only one square of brown, for example, then that would be a corner square. Gradually I fill all diagonal rows, with some flexibility. I hope this makes sense.

I've made a few crumb projects ,but I hardly ever have any solids except maybe out of my denim scraps ,I don't think I want to go there. LOL So mine look more like crazy crumbs which I love ,but I really like the way these are looking. I'll have to keep my eyes open for more solid scraps as I'm going through my huge (hoard) Stash and selling and gifting it away for my Big move across the pond . ! YaY! Scotland

That’s beautiful! I hate to waste fabric. I enjoy the mindlessness of it, I can just pick up pieces and start chain piecing and go from there For me, I won’t sew it, unless it’s at least an inch wide, anything tinier is too fiddly for my fingers.

Interesting to see your process! I learned a different way where you create a straight edge between pieces(with bits poking out)sew, and then trim off the seam to be straight afterward. In that class we worked sort of like a log cabin style block and created red flowers surrounded by green to represent the leaves. I noticed that your seams were much less than 1/4" in places---do they hold together well in a quilt or do you use these blocks in a wall art piece?? Love it!!! Thank you for sharing!

I’ve not had any seams popping so far 🤞🏻 - but I do pretty heavily quilt my quilts in general 😂
