For his time, he was a great photographer and creator. The colour film was still new to the public and print media. When Haas dropped his camera in 1986, he left inspiration to many new photographers, professionals and laymen. He was a genius of his time, but today he's just one among many.

Just an absolute genius presentation of his work and life story. I have to say that I teared up when I saw this master class on color photography. I can truly say that I was honored to receive the award from Leica for my portrait of Duane Michals in 1986 along with Mr. Haas. His work will always be an inspiration.

Thank you for this wonderful retrospective of Ernest Haas. He was an inspiration for me when I was starting in Photography. He had a way of seeing and projecting his vision onto the film with ‘art’ in mind. I was a mostly B&W Leica rangefinder user in the early 1970s, and I remember him writing about the advantages of ‘seeing’ with the Leicaflex and through the lens, so I bought one myself. Also, he felt the small Leitz tabletop tripod for portability was even preferred to an extra lens (got one of those too). He changed how I made photography with equipment but also opened my eyes to the art of vision, the unusual, and self-fulfillment. Thank you again, beautiful work here by Hass, and beautifully presented.

I loved Hass’ work in Life in the late 60s and early 70s. Once Life folded and I grew as a b/w photographer I lost track of him. I did not start building my library of photo books until the late 70s. Of course over the decades almost all of those books are b/w. Shame on me for not having purchased one of his books. I just ordered The American West.

Great program, though I have one small correction to suggest: At 10:57 the picture is of the Taos pueblo, yet the caption says Santa Fe. Taos is not Santa Fe and the puebloans would not appreciate being shifted to Santa Fe.

As an aging beginner in photography as a hobby, aiming to explore what creative experiences and expressions I want to achieve, I find that having now come across two photography artists via KZbin, Saul Leiter and Ernst Haas....they are my top inspirations. I wonder if the technicolour effect of their film based shots can be achieved in a similar fashion with a modern dslr without much need for faffing in post production work

And why don't you try taking some photos with an analog camera? On the other hand, you can always download luts or actions for PS or Lightroom to try to emulate the analog film.

Love and have studied his work, but I have a question. While photography is actually very subjective, I wonder why bad pictures that I would have tossed in the trash, happen to be “genius” work if it comes from a famous guy. It’s not jealousy, it’s a fact. Open any book from any famous artist and you’ll question why it’s any good! Just my humble opinion. Thanks.

The truth is that I also share your opinion regarding what you say; undoubtedly, fame and prestige always give a kind of "extra" to certain jobs, so to speak. I also believe that just because a photographer is globally recognized doesn't mean we have to like all of their photos.
