No matter what people think of the later seasons, you can’t deny that the cinematography and visuals have gotten better every time. S4 in particular has some amazing shots.

4:43 If you use Add, instead of Screen for your glows, you will get a more accurate result. Screen is useful for combining Alpha channels but since light is linear, you will want to use Add rather than Screen 99% of the time when you are working in the RGB channels. Add for RGB, Screen for Alpha is the rule, but by all means, use what works best for your specific shot!

For more accurate exposure changes, use Gain in Linear gamma, which you can set per-node in the context menu.

@@AlexPollockWasHere Hey Alex! I guess they like how the glow and vignette look more when put after the CST. Personally, I keep everything before the ODT (last CST) and do all exposure adjustments with linear gamma, including vignettes. This is to keep my options open in terms of output color space.

no you dont... this is not how things are done.. this method is simply unpractical.. i am sure he means well but there are guys on youtube who teach color grading (i wont mention names) who OVERCOMPLICATE things.. i dont know if they teach that way as a means of gate keeping (film riot is NOT doing that) or just to make it seem like it there is more to it than there needs to be..

I love your guys stuff.. I have for years, but this grade is so impractical, and not even close to what Company3 or any grading studio would do. Pulling key like this, and this many OFX on a short film, would take FOREVER. Colours can’t be forced into an image. The teals are there because they’re shot with practicals on set. Keys are generally only used when there’s a glaring issue which needs direct attention.

I was wondering if this is an actual workflow of big studios since it seems so super time consuming (which must multiply by a thousand times with so many episodes and scenes in a series?) I come from music production, I know what it feels like to have convoluted processing chains, but still this struck me as over engineered, maybe?
@haydenreinemo494 Жыл бұрын

But but I thought _everything_ had to have its colour saturation cranked up to insane levels to the point every colour (mostly reds and blues) looked absolutely unnatural or failing that, every colour had to look like it was done with pastels, by the same colour correction folks who work for HGTV. Are you telling us that it's _possible_ to make films and TV shows where the colours AREN'T hyper saturated to give them an artificial look? Wait, it's.... it's coming back to me. Yes, yes I can see it now! My memory's starting to come back. It's showing me that there once was a time before 2010 where TV shows and movies didn't have oversaturated colours!

How come the thumbnail looks 3D? That's a phenomeon I've seen a lot when laying red over blue color and I never understood why that happens...

Only issue with using ofx is that you’ll need to set project settings at source resolution and have no input sizing as ofx effects scale incorrectly when for example if you work on HD timelines and render at source resolution and source is higher than HD. I’ve seen many issues with using “glow” or even ofx grain. All I’m saying is be careful when using ofx. I believe it’s an issue of how resolve renders footage in its order of operations with sizing being at the wrong point in that operation as well as not having project settings set to the source resolution.

Got a question about the techniques here, is it actually standard and truly practical to track masks to faces like that in most if not all shots in a movie? My knowledge of davinci is limited but I can't imagine the people behind blockbuster films tracking a mask to the face of everyone in the shot over and over.

Adobe is great, but honestly, for colour grading... it's trash. They just don't compare to Resolve at all. The Magic Bullet plugin (which costs money) is probably one of your best bets for actual good colour grading within Adobe software, but you're better of learning how to do a roundtrip workflow from Premiere to Resolve (and its free)
