About my new course:
The Art and Practice of Color is a 9 hours Video Course focused on Color Theory and its Applications for painters. For oil, acrylic or gouache, it covers all the artistic dimensions of color : color wheels, pigments, palette, mixing strategies, color composition and harmony etc.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
-Beginners, intermediate or advanced painters.
-Hobbyists looking for a new approach to color and harmony.
-Atelier students looking for a coherent color system with a strong focus on pigments and painting techniques.
-Painters working primarily with oil, acrylic, gouache, casein* etc.
* The course doesn’t focus on specific details about each medium, all the demonstrations are made with oil paint, but the knowledge is transposable to all opaque painting techniques.
TOTAL TIME : 9 hours 21 min
Part 1 : Color Theory - This part is dedicated to color theory, in so far as it applies to painting. This part makes complex knowledge easy to understand. Florent reviews the most prevalent color systems for artists, their advantages and disadvantages and explains how he came up with his own model, specifically designed for painters.
Part 2 : Paint and Pigments - Because color can’t be conceived as an abstract notion, this part reviews 70 of the most frequently used pigments. It covers their properties and discusses how to use them practically. This part will give you all the knowledge you need to become a master of your palette and explore the palettes of ten old masters.
Part 3 : Mixing Strategies - Discover how a coherent theory and accurate techniques can help you mix exactly the color you need. Understand how to use the properties of your pigments to play with colors like a musician plays with notes and chords. - Color Composition - Explore an innovative and practical compositional system to harmonize colors in your painting. Learn the fundamental principles of composition and analyze examples from the greatest masters of the past: Raphael, Titian, Dürer, Velazquez, Courbet, Degas and many more…
Part 4 - Demonstration #1 : How to Paint Realistic Colors ? With a 2 hour still life demonstration, this part explains how to use color theory to paint realistically and get perfectly accurate colors. If your goal is to paint realistically, this demonstration will give you a structured method to reach it by understanding how color interacts with surfaces and textures.
Part 5 - Demonstration #2 : How to transform colors to fit in the composition of your choice? In this second demonstration, a simple landscape is transformed to create a unique chromatic atmosphere. Color theory isn’t just about realism but also about allowing the artist’s fantasy to express itself through color. This part will also cover some key elements of landscape painting like atmospheric colors, aerial perspective, reflections and refraction, vegetation etc.
Part 6 - Demonstration #3 : How to turn a simple black and white drawing into a painting using only theory and imagination? In this final and last demonstration, we start with a charcoal drawing and put color theory to the ultimate test : can it assist to create colors from imagination? With this 2 hour nightscape portrait, you will see how to paint human colors and how to articulate color and light to paint breathtaking atmospheric scenes.

FAQ
Y a-t-il une version française ? (Is there a french version ?)
Pas pour le moment, il n’y a pas encore de version française;
Is there going to be a DVD ?
No, there won’t be any DVD version of this program. This reduces cost and makes the entire program more affordable than it would be if the production and shipping costs of physical copies had to be included.

May I suggest something.... would you do a video on how to read a reference photo...before starting a painting...that will give a road map for the painting? Like...where is the focal point, what values are dominant ...far to distance objects in the reference...etc

you should check out Ian Roberts' channel too. he's great for breaking down composition and photo references. from one photo, 10 different artists might have each a different compositions because each one decides their own crop and focal point, and even if they have a similar comp, they'll have different ways/colours/value structures to approaching the piece.

Thank you so much for this video! I wish my father, who died 3 years ago, could see this... He loved to paint, but he lacked formal education and his biggest difficultly was mixing colors to get the color he needed. I tried helping him by searching for good educational videos or books, but I never found something as good as your lesson here. At least I will now be better at mixing colors and maybe he will see me from heaven and be glad I'm doing it well...

You are incredible!!! I wasted my life for one hour in some other dudes video on mixing colours where explaintions were vague and his colours did not look as described ( like his red looked orange, purpal looked brown) and all the mixing just looked muddy overall. Your presentation is amazingly clear on every level, explaination, visual and examples you use. Your articulation is impeccable. Thank you for being such an incredible teacher. You are definitely making a huge difference ❤

@@cynthiamarston2208 Florent said he was working on a color theory course, I believe it was last year, so I had been saving up - didn't know the price until he released it. I'm not a portrait painter so his other course wouldn't offer me as much help as this one, which has been a huge sticking point in my work. I live near an accredited college that offers fine art classes, but the cost of their "introductory" course is in the thousands. By comparison, this course is much more cost effective for what I need, which is color. Cynthia you can email Florent directly and ask him about your concerns and best options for what your painting needs are in your art journey. What the sticking points are for you in your work and I'm sure he would assist you in the education options that he offers.

This video doesn't touch on it but most art schools teach you to see value first before you see color. The first 2 years of my art school was focused on seeing value of blacks and whites in terms of graphite and charcoal drawings (drawing/drawing theory). Because drawing is not the same as painting you spend another 3-6 months learning to paint black and white before you start to use color. When you do start to use color you don't just jump into 12 colors....you start with one along with a black and a white. We did many monochromatic paintings. Then you move up to complements plus a black and white. You slowly work your way up to 3 (primaries/triadic) colors and gradually using more and more colors by the time you finish art school you have mastered 8-10 different colors along with all the values with black and white. Everybody hates to work and they all want to easy way out. If you learn slowly by taking one color at a time and doing many painting with each plus black and white you will not only learn color theory but also value which is unfortunately lacking in many amateur paintings. It's called practice makes perfect. Start simple and work towards complex. Doing this any other way will take more time and cause more confusion and will slow your growth as an artist.

Just purchased your course, this is exactly what I've been hunting for, for YEARS. Something about the traditional color wheel never quite clicked for me but every resource I could find (even by some super talented artists I really admire) was teaching everything based on this color wheel. Thank you for this video! This is the most comprehensive explanation of why having just 3 primary colors doesn't work for painting. When I teach painting I always tell my students to buy at least 6 colors, plus white & black: cadmium red, magenta (quinacridone), yellow, cyan, ultramarine blue, and phthalo green. You can get pretty much any color mixed with those 6, plus white & black.

Hello Again, This is an absolutely fundamental struggle for artists... The problem of "memorization" of a limited colour wheel has been the precise reason why I usually tend to only draw or use inks for creating. There is wave after wave of terrible advice out there...artists get frustrated and lost in this struggle. Your very "balanced and thoughtful" approach still allows for subtleties. There is so much more information in your approach. I think likening colours to musical notes was perfect....it gives one a less chaotic path to colour. Thankful for your work, and teaching...your work, I feel will be far reaching over time and use. Very, very thoughtful and thankfully "clear" explanations. As always, I wish you well. Stay safe and thank you again!!!

in contemporary music is the same. they just put random notes and say it's fine art. and Schoenberg invented a system to put 2 notes that don't relate at all with each other. I think art, in general, reached that was so high that no one can take it further so they just start "innovating" something that doesn't make sense at all. The video is great and it taught me a lot. you are a great teacher :D

I have looked at many color theory videos in order to try to understand the color theory but was either too simplified or not understandable to me but this has put things in a way I understood and has put me on a good path to learn the art and theory much more than before thank you fo this.

i paint 'intuitively' and your more cerebral approach in explaining was really needed; there are always times when intuitively i can 'see' and know the hue or color i want but have no idea how to mix my paints to achieve that and you explanation here is !!!!

53 seconds in and i'm already in awe, this is so so useful for me as an ND artist (who must learn about everything in immense detail or else suffer the dissatisfaction of unsatisfied curiosity for ever more!) Thank you so much.

Very helpful. I've always wondered why digital artists always sketch with black and white before they paint. Since I don't know why and find it's hard, I usually skipped it. Now they all make sense. Thank you!

I watched this vid and saved the poster a few months ago but at the time I was kind of like “well I’m not a serious painter so I won’t need this but maybe I’ll just save it in case I ever get good”.. well I just had to mix my own colours for the first time since watching and I pulled out the chart and it was AMAZING. So useful even if you’re not a professional!!! I was able to figure out exactly how to get the colours I wanted

Woooow thank you so much, this is something I don't usually see in a color theory video, or maybe is the fact that you made sure to let us know how important are those 2 other aspects of color (value and chroma) and how to considerate them in the process of painting. This new information will cange the way I draw and paint completely :')

Yes, I have been looking for a color wheel like this for over a year now. I have noticed many adults as well try to correct me because they are professional and I am not: they tell me I have the wrong theory, but I have researched and have learned otherwise. Their experience allows them to make better images than me, but that doesn't always mean they are correct, but generally, they are correct. This is a great video to show the artist in my life. I'm about to be 16 btw,, ^^ just so you know what I mean by adults. I love color, but I lack experience because although I understand it, I haven't made a body to brain connection with color. I have been scared to commit and waste art material, I always have to have double because I fear imperfection and wasting material: I'm afraid I can't get materials being where I come from. Although this is no longer true, it's been holding me back and left me less inspired. But I am still passionate. Edit: So I lack color confidence, illustration confidence in general, and color intuition. Please help! I want to improve ^^
