I've only recently found your channel, and love it. Subscribed after watching a few, then searched to see if you had one on brushes. Would you consider re-doing one on brushes and describing how you use each one, along with what type of bristles each has? The fan brush, for instance, looks like it might be badger, but you didn't say. You did say on some of the others. I love filberts and use them the most. Primarily soft synthetic bristles. I dislike hog bristle brushes, but know they're standard for oil paint and I'm not sure why. A round hog bristle seems useless to me. How would you have much control, or is there some other use for them I'm missing? Used to have some bright and flat badger brushes I loved but they went to brush heaven long ago and now I can't find them anywhere.

I started out doing nail art, and previously painted with nail art gel, nail polish and acrylic craft paints. I truly thought I'd love acrylic paints and hate oil. But it's quite the opposite, oil reminds me of nail art gel. I have all the time in the world to work with it and get it the way I want before it is set. 😊

Since a sheet of glass typically has sharp edges and tends to break if not careful, I've been using a flat metal gray cookie sheet 14"x16" with rounded corners. Love mixing color on the gray and it cleans up as easy as glass. I use to make my own wooden palettes using a templet from a store bought. I brushed several coats of clear acrylic on them to make them easier to scrape. Always had one ready to go. The aggravation of having to clean hard paint just before painting is awful. Getting dried buggers in your paint is awful. Most galleries will not even consider an artist if they see brush hairs or buggers in a finished painting. I still use my wooden palettes on the last finishing details because I'm fiscally moving around so much. When I see paintbrush storing devices, l'm like WTF! Put your preferred paint brush cleaner in a simple plastic coffee can and hang it off the bottom of your easel with a coat hanger. Store your 50-100 used brushes in a freaking simple empty cans. Don't be pissing around with neatness and care while you should be concentrating on creating and painting. Hell, when a palette knife or brush drops on the floor, I kick it to the side and keep painting. Sure, give your brushes a good cleaning with soap and water ever so often. But paint and paint and paint until your'e staggering around totally spent. That's how you learn to paint. Paint like a very kind warrior! I'm on my way to the store, look in the mirror and I have a glob of red Cad. in my beard below my mouth and a spot of Prussian blue on my temple. I'm like hell no, I got to turn round and go wash this shit off. But yeah, don't be afraid of getting dirty and stop thinking so much! Your'e just the vehicle,, allow art to have it's way with you!

Much of the Art being produced at the moment is more about "The Emperor has no clothes." perpetuated by art schools, colleges, galleries and critics all of whom attended the same art courses for the less talented.

I've been away from the atelier (ARA Toronto) for years. Thank you for the welcome reminder. I will set-up a Bargue, a Hogarth or a Fechin as a model, and do a 'size-as' study. Excellent way to remove the "block"!

It's all very true. I had the same experience. I wasn't understanding how to create good portraits until I began focusing on the values and shadow shapes instead of the features. Do this and a nose, a mouth, or an eye, will magically appear all by themselves.

Personally I find abstract art, contemporary art somewhat vacuous. I have always studied the human form and I have always struggled with what it's relevance could be. We need a "vision" that fits with society as it is today, admittedly so, However my fear is many "artists" to day have no skill in making art, as if a bunch of shapes and colors is fine art. The training, has almost disappeared from universities because of abstract, installations, etc. When the professors have lost touch with what is fine art, the field will consistently diminish. We also need to "quiet" most art critics. If I don't see, or they cannot produce, at the very least 100 works of their own, they need to be silenced.

I would start the introduction to pigment selection with the explanation of saturation, going light or going dark, with any hue, tends to lose saturation. That's why I love very dark pigment like Prussian blue and Cobalt Teal. Orange is a funny color, as while the saturated hue we can identify, but orange changed name as saturation and value changes. What do you think of Lithopone white?

*A WASTE OF FIFTEEN MINUTES.* The title of the vid is DECEPTIVE CLICK BAIT, and yes, that 'Thumbs Down' rating is MINE. I asked my DOG to watch this video with me. We both opted to run it at 1.5x speed because it's just too agonizing to watch it at normal speed. When it was over he turned to me and said, "I'm a freakin' dog, yet I already knew to make thumbnail sketches, then a sketch, then the painting!" He further explained how he already knew to make thumbnails first because...duh...they cost nothing and take very little time. Then he confirmed that he ALWAYS chooses his canvas proportions first...for OBVIOUS reasons.
