Just want to say I appreciate you Randy. Ethical hunting is something I appreciate, practice and teach. I have 14 grandchildren, not all of them hunt but, I live for the time spent passing on a tradition that was passed on to me. Take care, and keep doing what you do. Enjoy.

I remember something Randy said to the president and wife of Leupold scopes once. They were scouting for elk and hadn't seen any and then went to an area that had a fire in its recent past. There they saw a lot of elk. Randy turned to his co hunter and said, "That's why we hunt the burns". In 2018 some land I have in the Sangre de Cristo mountains burnt up. Now that land is covered with aspen and mexican poplar so thick it's like a jungle and the deer and elk are all over it. It's not easy to hunt though.

Colorado sets the standard for elk hunting and game management...imo. Grew up in Colorado (Leadville) hunting elk and deer and now go back every late season to do the same. Love it.

I live on the backside of Grand Masa National Forest and I always feel like I say next year I'll get an elk in Colorado, just like you next year Newberg. There is plenty of elk here, but I feel like there's more hunters on my frustrated days, so I'll usually sit up on a ridge and watch what the elk do. The nice big bulls are usually with their harem on private for most the season after they get spooked on out of the public land from the folks riding around on their 4wheelers the week before opening in the archery season. It can be so frustrating for a guy like me just trying to feed my family, but that's just part of hunting here in Colorado. I hope you make out here again this year, I admire what you do, so keep up the good work!

Yeah those otc units get filled with hunters, I try to find weird units and locations that most people avoid and scout a lot early in the year just to avoid them

Love the episode Randy. I love the fact that you were not afraid to make a show without a "glory shot". My best memories are from a backcountry archery hunt in Colorado where we never saw a bull. 50+ miles covered above 10,000 without a dead elk, but an amazing adventure with a great hunting partner. Well done. Thanks for showing hunting the way it really is.

I agree about the ease of hunting in Colorado. As a resident or non resident the odds are at just around 18% average year after year. So for simpliciy sakes your odds are 1 in 5 to tag elk, bull of cow. Good luck and good hunting .

Randy Newberg, Hunter thank you - quick question, ive heard you say to use thermals, scent control but then i hear you say start a fire to keep warm, well me being from texas, bbq pits, smokers, your going to smell like smoke, so does the issue of scent control and thermals matter? I would think of the elk are ok with burns/smoke then burn a fire every time on the mountain and you'll be ok with and without scent control and thermals- hope this question makes sense - thank you for all you do!

Smoke does not scare elk. If they smell the smoke on your body, you've already lost the wind game, as they will surely smell the human on your body. Reading and using thermals to your advantage is the ticket to scent control in the mountains. Thanks for watching.

7 ATVs in one spot, shoot, here in Washington that would be half a dozen ATVs, 7 RV campers and trailers, 4 wall tents, 3-4 Jeep’s and a dozen garbage bags full of empty beer cans.

Looking into a 2018 CO elk hunt. Units 21/22. SE corner of zone 21 specifically. Mostly BLM mixed in with some private. (That I won't have access to) Draw odds look good for a 2nd rifle season cow tag, but success rates are very low (sub 15% for any elk - less for bulls) over the last few years. How long do you think it takes for something like that to recover or is that a typical rate of success?

That is a typical rate of success for many units. A lot of hunter in the unit make for highly educated elk, which can result in success rates under 20%. Good luck.

Know your way around the land. Get a GPS and a map chip so you know where the public and private is. Get off the roads and trails a mile to places elk need for security and food. Lots of elk in Colorado. Good luck.

I'm glad you were not here this year. I was hunting the same area. No elk. None. Did not see an elk in five days of hard hunting. No one was seeing or killing anything. Seemed like there was an orange hat on every hill and around every corner. This area had been good to me in the past, but nothing went right this year.

Sorry to hear that. My brother was there and said it was tough, even though his daughter took her first bull opening morning of the 2nd rifle season. One of the few elk they heard being taken.

Just watched your video again. Looking at the scene where your truck is backing out from the motel. I actually stayed in the room with the elk on the door during this past third season! Room 107 if my memory is right. Yesterday was the last day to apply for a deer tag. hope you didn't miss it.

What year was this hunt. And dates? I hunt the grand Mesa and was trying to depict what year and season your hunting in on the video. Every year is different with the weather conditions during last rifle seasons, you just never know if there's going to be snow or not. On another subject you talk about how easy it is to hunt the grand Mesa a lot of local say their luck of shooting and elk is one every three years on average if they're lucky. The grand Mesa has huge potential for large quality elk however the Colorado division of wildlife allows over-the-counter tags to be sold for those units, Over the years I have seen the elk quality go down and down and down there are huge elk up there but they are far and few between because everyone shoots the four point. If Colorado would put point restriction on this unit we would see the elk numbers and qualities grow. But we all know Colorado loves to sell out of staters elk tags because of the huge revenue.

Enjoy your channel and the tips and messages you are sharing for the outdoorsmen - hunting, recreation, public lands etc. We had an impromptu Father / Daughter DIY Hunt come together for our staff hunters in CO this past season too.
