That painterly characteristic of the lens in that particular shot was most likely heat haze.

Might have to give some Cinestill 50D a try. I'm going to try to mostly shoot film this year. Seems like most people shoot the 400D so I haven't seen much about the 50D. I live in Colorado but It's quite a drive from any of the places you visited. Most of the front range where the majority of the population lives has absolutely nothing going for it photo wise. Might need to take a road trip.
