You just fully convinced me to save up this. I've never cared about clinical sharpness and just got a ZF in November. My favourite lens for every platform I've shot is always a 35mm 1.4 so this lens was almost made for me
@451greenwood4 ай бұрын
Yep the ZF is just beautiful in every way, it's not as good as Z8 or even close to the Z6iii but who cares, you don't buy a Zf to be the best, you buy it for the love of how it looks, how it feels, and as in this video on the 1.4 35mm it's good enough, this is how I look at the ZF, it's not the best at ANYTHING, but it's good enough to do everything... It's the only Z camera I've loved and I've owned the Z8, Z6ii.... What I've found is this ZF make me feel like I did when I bought the D700 (my favourite camera of all time) I'd take this ZF over every camera I have owned including my old trusty D850...

The importance of lens quality at different focal lengths is not often talked about. I'd say for focal lengths below about 24mm, better sharpness and pure optical quality makes more sense to have. There, the subjects themself tend to be the "character" of the image - not the lens qualities. Then, I'd argue, when we hit ~28mm to around 85 (IMO) - the lens "character" is more important. Softness is tolerated, especially when brighter 1.2/1.4 (or even lower) apertures allow for more light gathering and subject isolation. There, pure optics don't matter, because subjects are often center frame where the lens will perform the best anyways, with the background already out of focus (dont need the edges sharp). Therefore, I'd say: if you want a "clean" look, get the 1.8, if you want cinematic, the 1.4 is better.

Thank you for this useful comparison. I like the direction Nikon is taking with the new f/1.4 lens. Additional control ring and smoother bokeh transitions are appreciated as well as the weight, size and price. Also a reason why i still like to use F-Mount lenses like the AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED which is a legend. The new 35mm 1.4 certainly looks a cracker, as someone who's had a 35mm 1.4 G welded to one of his cameras for more of the last decade, I think the new lens looks just as good in almost all scenarios, whilst also being at a starting price less then 1/3rd of the older mount! Now my big decision is just do I keep waiting for that other mythical lens ;) I think the big decider here will be size and if the next 35mm is a beast of a lens, loads of people will be far more excited to have this one in the bag! Awesome stuff as usual mate!

A wonderful comparison and explanation of the 2 lens choices. The boke shot pretty much explained everything I needed to know about the potential use case. Thanks so much for this video-I’d been waiting for it. I’ve been really struggling while weighing whether to get the 1.8 vs the 1.4. I’ve used the DSLR 1.4 version (rental) and LOVED it, but couldn’t justify the cost. I tend toward the “too clinical” feeling about the 1.8, but the 1.4 reviews so far have pretty much dunked on the limitations of the 1.4. Complicating things: the current sale price on the 1.8 vs the cost of the 1.4. Overthink much? Why, yes! At least now, I have what I think is a much more balanced look at the lens. I see many folks feel the 35mm is boring--that’s how I feel about the 50mm focal length. Proof that one person’s Goldilocks lens is another person’s brick. So appreciate your clarity in explaining things.

Thanks for bringing some sanity to the introduction of this lens! I can't believe how many outlets I saw saying "why did Nikon downgrade their 35mm S-line (presumably 1.2) lens? F1.4 used to be label for pro grade lenses with excellent sharpness, build quality and all the latest tech, right up until the previous generation of Nikon F lenses launched in the 2010s. Some even less than a decade ago (28 1.4 & 105 1.4) .Why Nikon decided to break lens line up tradition and when other brands give out excellent F1.4s, we get F1.8's and budget F1.4's. I also don't understand why people are happy with this. What is wrong with affordable F1.8's and excellent F1.4's? Who ever complaint that this should be turnt upside down? Imagine Nikon launched a high end $2500 70-200 F4 with VR and a cheaper plastic feeling 70-200 f2.8 without VR and with softer corners. I guess everyone would just swallow it and call Nikon genius all over again.
@b34k974 ай бұрын
@@caleidoo I dunno, I kinda see it as further stratification. You still have the 1.2 S models that meet all the qualities you mention: excellent, pro-grade, super sharp, extra fast. You also have an excellent 1.8 S models that are Pro/Prosumer level, super duper sharp, but not quite as fast if you want to save some money. Then a line of 1.4 models can be a hobbyist level for people who want something super fast, but don't need a clinical level of sharpness, instead preferring some "character" (or videographers).

@@caleidoo There is the upcoming 35mm f1.2S, which should be able to satisfy your requirement of "pro grade lenses with excellent sharpness, build quality and all the latest tech". If the f1.4 were also to be a S lens, the f1.2S and f1.4S could possibly eating into each other's market segment.

@@jackyleecs A 35mm F1.2 lens will be big and heavy. Not what I want. Also why I would never buy the 85/1.2 and went for the 85/1.8. I'm not looking forward to walking 12-18hrs with a 35/1.2. I have the 50/1.2, but that's because my Sigma 50 F1.4 broke by accident and I didn't want to go to Nikon 50/1.8. But a 35mm F1.4, I carry almost always together with a second body with a 85 F1.8. Light, compact and versatile. If this Nikon non-S 35/1.4 is adequately sharp or has no too obvious optical compromises, I can live with that. But It still feels weird to have to go to a "budget lens" with also lesser solid build and lack of coatings, if you want to continue to use F1.4. I don't like being forced to chose between stepping back to F1.8 or buying a huge, heavy and expensive F1.2. I was hoping Tamron or Sigma would come to the rescue, but I guess that an excellent third party 35/1.4 would mess up Nikon's line up strategy.

I have spent the last few days with the 35mm 1.4Z and the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 f mount on my Z7II. The sigma is still sharper. The nikon will get even around f3.2 and probably reach its peak at f5.6. Corner sharpness is better for the sigma, if it matters to your work. The field of view is very slightly wider on the sigma, but it feels like an in-lens correction on the nikon side to correct the distortion. The sigma has slightly more contrast as well and has a cooler colour rendition. The purple fringing is there indeed in the nikon, but a slider move in LR corrects it. I guess we will soon have a lens profile. I personally find the bokeh quite pleasing on the nikon side. I guess it's a question of preference. The biggest benefit of the z lens is the weight. If you add up the sigma, its lens hood and the ftz adapter, it reaches 835g. The nikon is half the weight. For contextual portaits and street photography I think it is an interesting lens option with a different character. If you need a better corner sharpness it might not be the best tool.

I think you nailed it. DX isn't selling as well as Full frame. I think this was originally supposed to launch as a DX 35mm f1.4 (50mm equivalent). Not wanting to lose the investment, Nikon adjusted it to support the full frame but it couldn't be labeled an "S" line. Otherwise, why would Nikon ever want to launch a substandard prime lens? My two questions: is it better & sharper wide open than the Sigma ART 35 1.4 with FTZ adapter - my only remaining F mount lens, next to the Nikon 105/1.4 which will probably remain cemented onto a FTZ forever. And secondly: will there be a difference in AF speed/stickiness in difficult light because of only one AF motor? I use my Sigma 35/1.4 for shots on the dance floor at weddings or events. Lots of movement, both from people & faces and spot lights and LEDs. I'm tempted to try it out, but if it's the same as the Sigma (optical/AF), but just without FTZ, I don't see the point and will just use the Sigma until it dies or gets stolen.

I only kept it because it does helps my wrist on long days and for portability. I would like to see the flare and portraits with the new 35 1.4 nikkor to see if its better match for my taste, if not i guess i will be getting a tech adapter and sigma 35 dn. Hesitated long, but took the plunge with the Nikkor 50/1.2 S and it's an amazing lens. Boringly perfect, but great. Except the size of course. Ricci, I'm not sure how much of Nikon's ear you have access to, but it would be next level to have some lenses with a dedicated aperture ring. Like those on the Fuji G-mount system or like the Sony 24/40/50 Prime G Lenses or even the G-Master offerings that have the "Automatic" and the graduated F-stops. Even some zooms like the 24-70 M2. Affordable would also be key, even if they split out some S-line (more GM like) lenses. I feel there is a huge demand for lenses with such "versatile" aperture rings. While the programmable rings are great, having a dedicated/graduated ring with detents would be better for some primes/zooms. What I'd really love is to rock a more compact prime or even zoom with aperture ring even if the optical quality is more F-mount than Z-mount to keep cost low. I miss the feeling of a D750 and a small prime for travel/street photography. While the 35/50 1.8's are exceptional they're just massive compared to my old F-mount lenses.

I think this lens could be great for Nikon, even better than the z6iii. Nikonrumors is saying their is a 50mm coming, so I hope a lineup of these would serve Nikon Z very well. Nikon chose to embrace competition, contrary to Canon and this lens will be very competitive against the Chinese brands. Since the advent of the Z mount, prices of lens have gone up quite a bit, this and hopefully at least a 50 and 85, would make many who are not pixel peepers either move from F to Z partially or fully and even get new or people switching.

I would not see that as great motivation, if I was in their shoes.

@@caleidoo They can still use F-Mount lenses on the FTZ adapter. I also have very good AF-S Nikkor ones which are working perfectly fine on mirrorless.

As I saw on Nikonrumors website, Viltrox and Meike are planning to release their version of F1.4 primes for Nikon Z FF cameras this or next year, Sigma is also maybe on the way...and Nikon realised how big market is for cheaper F1.4 primes...so they made couple of compromises...added 1 instead of 2 AF motors, exclude pro coatings and ED elements, and with that, they made reasonably priced 35mm f1.4. Meike will probably be cheaper option but the worst option...I think that Viltrox will be at the same price and pretty comperable, and Sigma will be more expensive, but with better optics and build. I think next 2 years will be really great for Nikon Z users...lots of lenses are coming, I hope couple more of cameras(maybe Z5II and Z50II and maybe some more). :)

Everyone I know in photography love shooting 35mm,? But for me 😂... I prefer 20mm and yes 28mm or in S line 40mm and the outstanding 50mm, I have never liked Any 35mm it's just not me.... And now I actually found someone who shares my view😊.... As always great video and yes even though I don't like the 35mm I watched the full video because it still interesting to see what it's capable off, and in photography the old rule you're always been educated in something,

I love my f-mount Sigma 35mm f1.4, and when I moved to Z I tested and just never really liked the 35mm f1.8s lens and have kept using the Sigma on FTZ. It's still my go-to lens for both video and photo work. I would love to hear some impressions of how the new 35mm f1.4 compares to the Sigma. Thanks for the review!

I have spent the last few days with the 35mm 1.4Z and the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 f mount. The sigma is still sharper. The nikon will get even around f3.2 and probably peaks at f5.6.

I use the 24 a lot for video, and much of the time i record using the dx crop mode to get a 35mm fov. Also use the 50mm lens... So, probably a 35 1.4 which crops to almost 50mm might be a dream, specially a lens with this much personality that i miss on the 24 and the 50...

Great video! Would have liked to see a sharpness comparison at F1.8, F2, F2.2 range. Love that this came out, but it should have been 2 years ago for an 'imperfect' design.

It'd be nice to see the comparisons but 1.8S is still sharper at F2.8 than 1.4. So it's safe to assume it's sharper through that range.

Yeh I did those comparisons but it was much of the same the 1.4 really doesn’t catch up to the 1.8 until f2.8 /f4 so decided to remove those parts to keep the length of the video down.

@riccitalks, any plans for an updated 35mm shootout? I think what might be more telling about the usefulness of this new 1.4 Z lens is how it compares in your controlled test against the once revered F mount 35 1.4G. Do you have any of your own observations from what you've seen against that lens? If it's an optical improvement i.e. sharper and with less aberrations then that once esteemed lens, then it's a complete and total winner , especially for 24 MP full frame cameras.

Very interesting.. I mostly shoot on my z8 wide open to 2.8 so it makes me wonder if I should stick with the 1.8s I’ve got.. I mean there is probably no point selling my 1.8 to get a 1.4 I’d be losing money but it’s very interesting.

Hi Ricci, how would you compare it to 40/2? Focal length is almost the same and difference in aperture isnt that much (for me at least, usually I stop it from f/4 up). I own 50/1.8 which is usually too long for me, so i bought 40 and it was too soft, so i returned it. I love my 24-120, but it is too heavy for everyday carry with my Z5, so I am looking for something small around 35mm. 28/2.8 might be great too, but I am worried about the same softness as with the 40, as they are in the same price range. Thanks!

This lens is also available for a bargain price if you compare it to other lenses: The Canon 35 mm f/1.4 costs 1.499$. The Sony is 1.398$. It's also less expensive than the Sigma for E-Mount which is around 748$. What i heard about a customer review on the new Canon is: Not worth the high price because it does heavy lens corrections in the camera (which don't apply to video).

I see a difference in AF speed tbh. I also looked up, that it has one motor instead of two motors in the 1.8. Anyway: the most important question is, if it is better or similar to the F-mount 35/1.4 with the same rendering. This looks like it…a comparison would be great!
