Another great video Ben! I actually quite liked that you mentioned your perspective on COVID-19 and the racial justice movement thats happening in the USA. Its even more heartening to see you stand up against pressuring bitter voices threatening to unsubscribe for simply expressing your compassion. Any landscape photographer is a human being first, and acknowledging what's happening in our world is essential, and would be so myopic to just proceed with your subject while the world and your fellow countrymen are in distress. I'm usually a silent viewer, usually don't comment a lot, but watching a few bigots in the comments just made it impossible for me to not admire your patience with these racists. As a part of your international audience, and a person of color, I feel really proud to be your subscriber! Keep up the great work, and always be this passionate!

Thank you Atul, and that was very well said. I think one of the failings of our society is that people only hear what they want to hear rather than truly listening to what people have to say. Confirmation bias plays a huge role, and the cycle perpetuates. I think a lot could be gained by sitting down with a person from a different background and sharing life experiences over a cup of coffee.

I think a lot of people these days are simply looking for a fight. It's quite sad really, and they don't take time to actually listen to what people are saying.

Thanks so much Mike! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. It was a bit odd getting out there after everything that has happened. It almost didn't feel real. Since the trip was short, I never really got in the swing of things, but hopefully that'll be better on my next trip. It was quite interesting to be out in nature and see how life goes on and how everything seems perfectly normal despite the chaotic nature of our current society.

Thanks Terry! It sure was a nice campsite, and I had the canyon all to myself. That being said, it probably looks a bit nicer on video than in reality, and that will be a topic for a future video. There were a LOT of signs on this trip telling me that I probably shouldn't be there-so many that it was downright comical at times. Just as an example, if you watch the video where I'm hanging the hammock, look at the left side of that large arched branch and where it touches the ground. That is the location of an extremely active beehive. I love bees and they're truly fascinating creatures. They minded their own business, and I was careful not to disturb them. There were quite a few things along those lines on this trip though, and I'll explore that in a future video.

So true what you say of being unsettled until that first shot. I had always thought it was ‘just me’. I often arrive at a location, feel overwhelmed, and simply do not know where to start but once that first acceptable shot is in the bag the world lights up. You nailed it with that section of wall. Thanks for being there.

There really is something to that first photo. It's also my goal to try and shoot at least one photo each day to keep the momentum going. It's a lot of work, but after spending a week or so in the field, that results in quite a few images to work with.

I've been waiting for this video for so long! So good to see you back in the great outdoors Ben. That first exposure, after what I'm sure feels like ages must've felt really good. When you showed the sneak peek of this first exposure I immediately recognized that varnished wall of the canyon from your shot from last year, it's a really beautiful place and you really made the most out of it. I love how the cracks in the wall frame the bush inside a triangle, and the play with the horizontal line that the dry grass in the foreground creates as well as the contrast with the vertical lines of the wall itself. Beautiful capture.
@BenHorne
@BenHorne 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kevin! The desert varnish on that particular wall sure was beautiful. It has a lovely color palette that isn't terribly common. It's interesting you you mention those diagonal lines framing the bush. I wish I could say I noticed those, but it wasn't until you pointed them out that I saw them. While composing the photo, I was paying attention to the alignment between the bush to the wall behind it. Beyond that, I was paying close attention to the outside edges of the photograph. The lens I was using is very dim, so it was tough to see a heck of a lot on the ground glass. It sure is fun to notice stuff like that after the fact though. Thanks again.

Thanks Chris! The funny thing is that I didn't even notice those lines until you pointed them out. The lens I was using for this photo is quite slow, so the image on the ground glass is very dim. Ben, your opening metaphor was very poetic. To me, you stand out as a photographer not just because of your images and dedication to your art, but because of your genuine love for the outdoors along with your humanity. You rise above the crowd of landscape photographer vlogers because of this. My wife and I are missing Utah and your videos take us there and help sooth our souls during these difficult time. Also, I think I know what was going on with your car's heat gage - I've had the same experience. At times on dirt roads in the West when you have to travel at slower speeds, if you are moving in the same direction and speed as the wind, the engine heat moves with the truck heating the sensor. As soon as you change directions the thermometer drops. Looking forward to the next episode.
@BenHorne

It's a shame I didn't have more time in the canyon, but I'm hoping to make it back there again in the fall. We'll see. Thanks as always for watching and commenting Stuart!

Ben, I’m not sure the hammock tree was big enough. I was a little scared for you. :). On the other hand great video as always. That desert varnish is a wonder and I sure cannot fathom the amount of time it takes to build up. A simple composition but wow what detail and color comes out is amazing. Whenever I find myself in a place like that where I can relax a little my thoughts turn to how big the country is and how many people may have come to that area in the past. I imagine perhaps Native American children running around some shelter with their parents scolding them or some old prospector looking for minerals. Time is a crazy thing to comprehend. The farm I grew up at recently was torn up and a subdivision placed on it. In such a short amount of time any evidence of children playing and working as a family are gone with nobody any wiser that memories were made on the very ground their houses are on. Not sure why I’m rambling but you seem to be a guy that could think the same.
@BenHorne
@BenHorne 3 жыл бұрын
Haha! Yeah, that was certainly a very beefy tree, and it made for a great place to hang the hammock, minus the very active beehive on the left side where the branch makes contact with the ground. They were minding their own business, and I was minding my own business, so the bees and I got along well. I can very much relate to your thoughts about imagining these areas in times past when countless generations of native people lived there. They saw the same canyon walls, experienced the conditions, and called these very special places home. In many ways, I think they had things figured out a heck of a lot better than our modern society. Thanks as always for watching and commenting Chad!

To the people complaining about Ben adding some thoughtful commentary: Ben actually did an outstanding job on his opening commentary. The naysayers really need to give thought to their own comments. And, I'm a white guy with a tremendous dislike for the BLM organization itself. However, there are issues with race relations, not only in America, I assume much of the world. I'm a strong supporter for the police. That doesn't mean there are no bad apples in the barrel. And, black America needs to give some thought to a number of the BLM positions. Both sides have fault to share and it just might be best if we can sit down together and try to resolve some of these issues while recognizing abolishing prisons is just not going to work how the BLM thinks it will. Ben, you did a great job!!

Very interesting Jorge! Another commenter also mentioned it. It seems it has something to do with driving slowly, possibly in the same direction as the wind so fresh air doesn't circulate on the temperature sensor, wherever it is located. It definitely started freaking me out a bit, especially compared to how hot it was when I visited this canyon last year.

Hi Ben. Your prologue was absolutely superb and profound. It truly sums up what is going around us. I'm still in a self-imposed lock-down here in Florida, but keep eying my camera packs longingly. @BenHorne

Thanks Jeff! Sometimes the opening voiceover is tough to right, but this one pretty much wrote itself. There is so much going on these days, that's for sure. The Intrepid is a fantastic camera to backpack with. It's so light and compact compared to my Arca-Swiss. That being said, I use very lightweight/slow lenses on the Intrepid, which also means the ground glass is quite dim compared to using the faster lenses on the Arca-Swiss. As a result, it takes longer to focus and fine-tune the Intrepid. It performed like a champ, and I'm super happy with that camera. My pack weight before water was just under 50lbs, which is pretty awesome.

I've been going through a dry spell in my photography during this pandemic season. I'm personally figuring out some alternative plans to process my B/W 4x5 film that I photographed from my first solo trip last fall. I usually use the photo school's lab to process however the school has been closed due to the current state of things. But at least now I have some ideas to go about it. Hopefully after processing my film that it'll rejuvenate my juices to go out and photograph. I love photographing both B/W and color. Thank you for sharing this trip!

Hey Ben, couldn't help but notice the "world's largest Chevron station" you were pulling into in Jean, Nevada. I've been there a number of times, back in March 2020 during the Mint 400, which starts out in Primm, and then again on July 6th, 2020. I do a fair amount of desert racing photography and video and love the whole desert scene. Of course, large format isn't exactly what the doctor called for when it comes to desert racing. I have purchased a 4x5 off Ebay and need to pick up a few items for the camera and then begin to experiment with large format. I've been a long time viewer of both you and Nick Carver and appreciate your time and effort in producing all this material. Love your images as well as your channel! Great work!!
@BenHorne
@BenHorne 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Billy! Yup, that's the station. It was quite packed when I was there, and I saw lots of trucks towing offroad vehicles on trailers. Perhaps it was some of the people getting there ahead of the July race. That's awesome to hear that you're building up a 4x5 kit. It's certainly an entirely different experience than shooting digital, and I think you'll like the departure from the norm. Working with both formats gives a sense of balance. That's one of the reasons why I'm looking to jump back into a digital kit again for certain things.

Just a little insight into your subject that you may find important. The small tree/bush is a Russian Olive and is not native to the U.S. Our wonderful government imported them thinking they would provide positive benefits. The rest is history. We now have very large programs in the West trying to get rid of them and unfortunately, are doomed to fail.

I just did some research, and I think the plant is a Turbinella Oak. It's impossible to tell from the photo shown in this video, but the leaves have dominant spikes that will catch on clothing. There was another one near where my camera was, and when I brushed against it, those leaves would grab onto my pants. They seem very well armored against grazers. I looked up the Russian Olive and though the color of the leaves is similar, the leaf structure is quite different. It was quite interesting reading about how invasive they are throughout the west. I wasn't ware of that!
