Colorado RAV4 Camping | RAVRALLY 2021

In summer 2021 we visited Colorado to see our friends. We camped, cooked amazing food, and joined the RAV RALLY.

Thanks for watching! Yes we absolutely love our set up. The table is from REI (Mountain Summit Gear Heavy-Duty Roll-Top Table - Large). The awning is the ARB Touring 2000mm awning. We also have the room attachment which is really nice. Our rack system is from Frontrunner!

You really don'y need all the fancy gear! If you have a vehicle and a sleeping bag, you can get into this hobby. When we started we used a Mazda 3 and a normal ground tent. Still able to explore easy trails, find dispersed campsites, and have a great time.

Thank you! The plug in hybrid looks amazing. Ours is the TRD offroad, but honestly the plug in hybrid is better in a lot of ways. More power, better acceleration, better efficiency. We love our TRD but there are definitely some advantages to the hybrid models.

Hi there! Thanks for watching! We haven't really recorded a full walk-around of everything we have, though we do have brief overviews in a few of our videos, usually showing a few pieces of gear at a time. Check out the 1st video on our Utah series, we show the awning, tent, etc. Since we have made a bunch of updates since then, there is definitely new stuff to show (new tires & wheels are the biggest new change). Happy to answer any questions if you are curious about our set up!

Did you end up making the trade? I'm thinking the same thing. I kind of want to get rid of my 2013 4Runner before the frame rots out and it becomes worthless, and the 40 MPG of the hybrid is pretty attractive to me.

We have the RTT mounted to a FrontRunner Slimline II rack. You can mount a tent to normal crossbars, but a platform rack (from Frontrunner or Prinsu) is a better option.

Thanks! We definitely recommend getting an aftermarket rack if you plan on mounting a rooftop tent. Prinsu is a great option!

Hi from London !! Love the recipe/ cooking demo, I need all the help I can get 😅 Some questions if I may…. The ikamper mini - can you sit up in it comfortably for a decent period or time (not sure if you lean against the back or side) say to read a book? I have a new defender, it’s tall so not easy to reach the side to tuck any material in when closing - does that sound like a problem? And finally, have you been able to leave your sleeping bags and pillows inside when closing ? I have seen mixed messages on the latter. I pondering between the ikamper and Bundutop popup - tough choice Many thanks and keep them coming. Steve 🙏

Hello there! You can sit inside the ikamper mini (it is pretty tall inside), but because of the angle of the hardshell it is difficult to comfortable lean against the back unless you have a few pillows. In terms of reaching the tent, our roof is pretty high up with our lift kit, but we usually stand inside an open door, or on top of a tire to reach the tent easily. We are able to fit 2 sleeping bags, but no pillows inside the tent. The sleeping bags we have are for backpacking, so they compress easily. Cheers!

Hi! We do not carry extra gas. We plan our trips in such a way that we do venture off into the wilderness, but have a chance to re-fuel somewhere along the way. We have never run out of gas before. It is encouraged to bring gas along if you are going super long distances, but typically we stay within the range of our gas tank.

What is make/model of the awning that you use and do you recommend it or would you get something different if you had to do it again?

The awning is an ARB Touring 2000mm. We love it! Super easy to set up & provides shelter anywhere we need it. Also we have a room attachment that converts the awning into a full room with bug nets, floor, and walls. Check out our first Utah trip video to see the awning room attachment! There are some other good brands out there too, but ARB is well established and we are very happy with it.

Thanks! Yes when this was filmed we still had the stock TRD tires / wheels. The lift is actually a Rough Country 2.5" spacer lift, and then Dendoff stiffer rear coils. We have since swapped out the wheels & tires but do not have a video of the new set up yet.

Hey there! We did upgrade our wheels & tires (and added a lift), but at the time of this video we were still on the stock TRD wheels. Did have the lift already. In our more recent videos with the RAV you can see the new wheels & tires.

We have a Frontrunner rack. The rack itself can support over 600lbs. The roof can only hold about 180lbs or so while driving (much more when parked). No issues having a rooftop tent with 2 people in it on top of the car.

The RAV4 is AWD. We've had the tent mounted for 3 years with no issues. It's only 125lbs. You can see in our other videos what kind of trails we do with the tent. Nothing too aggressive really.

Looking at a RAV4 - what kind of RAV4 do you have? Deciding between a TRD, Prime or Adventure. I'm a birdwatcher and go on dirt roads/trails but nothing serious.

We have the TRD version. If you are not doing anything too aggressive, you may be fine with a hybrid & just put some all terrain tires on it! The Prime is probably the best RAV in terms of efficiency and power, but of course it is more expensive too. The TRD is good in that it comes with all terrain tires, but you can always add that aftermarket.
