Colorado State Parks Series: E2 Barr Lake

Episode 2 of the Fishin' Time Colorado State Parks Series is Barr Lake State Park. I spent a day on the kayak at Barr lake back in April when the water levels were full to the brim. Barr Lake is a bird peepers paradise, but still a great place to wet a line on the Front Range. The weather was perfect, and ended up having a great day on the lake. The fishing may have been a little slow, but you can't slay em on every trip.

There are some really big Wipers in that lake. Im talking over 3 ft. I dig the channel.

Had the kayak on this reservoir a couple times. Lots of carp jumping in the AM. Did manage to catch a healthy, chunky trout on a diver last trip. Other than that, it can be really slow. Have seen snake-sized pike caught from shore near the boat launch.

Hi, I just wanted to ask , did you get permission to get on this lake or you just came there and started to fish? I wanna try to fish from shore

It’s a state park, so either have a state park license or you can buy day permits. Fishing from the shore can be challenging, in spring the water was much deeper than you’ll find now, just went on Wednesday and the water level is way down since it’s a reservoir that serves the farmer’s irrigation needs. It’s 10 minutes from my house so I’ve been here a lot. Plenty of carp if you’re interested in that. Some trout but it’s tougher on land since they’re cold water lovers and go deeper - middle of the reservoir in the summer. Night fishing or early morning is your best bet for anything much. There are a couple of trees by the dock and fishing pier, otherwise no shade. Mosquitoes can be a nightmare at night so pack bug spray, otherwise good luck and fish on!
