I think you are correct, but I scratch my head trying to comprehend why so many people have zero interest in veteran heroes of our past. They have no clue about the cost that was paid so they could live so well today.

It really bothers me that so few young folks today know nothing of our past. I don't expect people to know everything there is to know, but it hurts deep to realize they don't know the first thing about WW2, WW1, Vietnam, etc. We preserve the sacrifice these men and women made and ensure that sacrifice is never in vain by keeping their reality front and center always.

Come on over to Canada, we probably have Veteran Headstones in some places that need cleaning. I've yet to relocate my great grandfather's grave again....family joke is he packed up his tombstone and moved to be closer to my great grandmother and somewhere in the catholic cemetery is my grandfather so all three are probably having a party someplace with the boys they served with ie two great uncles I've never met. One's in Belgium in Berg Op Zoom Canadian War Memorial Cemetery and the other I think is in the same cemetery as my grandfather, great grandmother, great grandfather and my great grandmother's second husband.

What works on hard water ? The water is turning the headstone black
@theyfaceeast
@theyfaceeast 4 жыл бұрын
For difficult situations such as hard water stains, I recommend you contact the folks at GraveStoneCleaner.com. They are a distributor for D/2 Biological Solution and are experienced with cleaning and resetting headstones. They offer a different product for soiling that can't be removed with D/2.

Water alone shouldn't make the headstone black, at least not from the short usage during clean in ng and rinsing, unless it's badly contaminated. Are you using water from a municipal water source or do you have your own well? If you have "city water", they normally have to test the water regularly and those reports are usually available online. That way, you can see which minerals may be causing the issue. If you have to, you can buy gallons of distilled water, usually for about $1/gallon, which can get expensive relatively quickly. You could also collect rainwater or make your own solar still to distill your own purified water, if too much iron or lead is in the water you're using currently. What type(s) of stones are you cleaning? That, and what chemical(s) you're using may also have something to do with it. Were you able to solve the issue by chdcking with the supplier, or are you still having issues?

I haven't cleaned a veteran headstone in Iowa yet. I just hosted a veteran headstone training event in Flemington, NJ on Saturday. I'm not sure when I'll make it to Iowa, but I'll get there! Hopefully the folks in Iowa will get them all cleaned before I get there.

Yes. I visited an old church cemetery just north of Dallas and posted the photos on Facebook. A man by the name Mike Rowland has taken up the cause there in that local area and is leading the charge to clean the veteran headstones by Memorial Day.

Sir, Tried to send you a message via the website contact section, but not sure it went through. Wanted to let you know the Hawaii Detachment of By Memorial Day is checking in. Would be glad to share my efforts so far.

Hello Mark. Great to hear from you. Yes, please do share an update from Hawaii. We will be getting organized this year including leadership roles for each state, each county, and each zip code. I am working on a website to record every veteran grave, register volunteers, and designate a volunteer to each veteran grave. The volunteers will commit to visiting their assigned veteran graves on a regular basis to make sure the grave is kempt, the headstone is clean, and a flag is displayed 24/7/365. My plan will work as long as we have a greater number of living patriotic Americans than we do veteran graves.

Hi R.D. Be sure to print out the protocol issued by the National Cemetery Administration and share it with the cemetery caretaker. If they still say no, then I call the local press. TV news reporters and newspaper reporters love to interview people who stand in the way of someone volunteering to clean veteran headstones covered in nasty disgrace. Cemetery caretakers are very protective of the headstones under their watch, because they don't want anyone to harm the stones. That's where the new best practices protocol comes in. You can also introduce them to my videos. There are a lot of cemeteries, so you will find one that welcomes your request. You can use them as a reference when going to the next cemetery.

Thank you for the information. Printing the protocol to try it out. What is the significance of cleaning the headstones from bottom to top on the protocol?
@theyfaceeast
@theyfaceeast 3 жыл бұрын
@@a1f1l65 Good question. I don't know why cleaning a headstone from the bottom to the top is critical. I'm sure they included that point for a good reason, but being the curious kind of guy I am, I'd be interested to learn the reasoning behind the concept.

@@theyfaceeast The www.limeworks.us website states that you should use circular motions with the brush, working from bottom to top, in order to "prevent staining and streaking as clean water drains downward." Apparently, the clean water rinsing the nasty stuff down over an already cleaned area will just flow everything off, whereas rinsing dirty stuff onto an uncleaned area may trap and hold the dirt long enough to create worse issues than you'd solve. Limeworks is where I bought my 5gal. container, which I distribute as needed into sprayers for when I go out. One holds straight D2, and another 50/50 D2 to water mix. I keep a garden sprayer with plain clean water for mixing.

@@Jackalski57 honestly I just have to take the professionally trained folk's word for it when they say scrubbing a veteran headstone from the bottom up is critically important as compared to scrubbing from the top down. If a trained historic preservationist is reading this, please explain to the rest of us the reasoning behind the bottom up scrubbing priority. Personally, I think scrubbing bottom up is simply a good habit to follow just in case someone happens to switch from a veteran headstone, which is relatively short, to a larger ornate headstone which is relatively tall. Another factor might be the type of cleaning solution used in case someone begins working at the top of a tall stone and the cleaning solution runoff is streaking down and lightening the grimy areas below.

Both initiatives are important and worthy of funding. The world is full of things that cannot be overlooked and must each be tended to by the living. Death is part of life. Forgetting the dead is forgetting human history. There is much to learn from those who came before us, both good and not so good. Soldiers stand watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 24 hours a day 365 days a year regardless of weather conditions for a reason. To be selected to be one of these guards is one of the highest honors a man can achieve in the United States of America. While speaking with a young man last week, he had no knowledge of Arlington National Cemetery and he had never heard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. That's a major problem and massive risk to our sovereignty as ongoing independent nation.

He is honoring them by keeping their memory alive and what they sacrificed for freedom. He's not packing them a picnic basket. The dead cannot help themselves. Homeless Vets are from poor mental health practices in our country along with V.A. policies. You can't save the world!
