Sir I really respect and appreciate what you do. I could spend years cleaning up headstones where I'm at. The days of the gravekeeper are long gone. It's just a crew of undocumented cheap labor that maintains most of these cemeteries now in these day and no one is going to pay them to do REAL upkeep

Our burial grounds are in dire straights with cremation taking over the sale of burial plots which up until 1960 funded the maintenance and upkeep of old cemeteries. There is no source of money for our cemeteries, so it should be no surprise our cemeteries and headstones are in the shape they're in. I'm not sure we can turn this around, but I think we should do our best and hope others join us.

I appreciate your encouragement! Lost our home in Hurricane Ian flooding, so I've been a bit distracted for the past 6.5 months. But Memorial Day is coming, so I'll make a push to motivate as many people as possible to Volunteer to clean a veteran headstone by Memorial Day.

Since the first step in cleaning a monument is using water and a scraper/soft brush, could this step be completed on a day when it is raining, using the rain as the water source and then coming back the next day if not raining to then add either D2 or Wet and Forget. This way I can do lots of cleaning on one day and follow with lots of memorials the next. Thanks!

I like your plan! It makes logical sense to me. I cleaned a veteran grave marker on Saturday. It had rained that morning so the stone was already wet when I arrived. There was no need to wet it at that point, so I just sprayed on the D/2, waited 10 minutes, and started scrubbing.

The best way to find veteran headstones in need of care is to first know how to identify them. Watch my KZbin video Types of Veteran Headstones and Grave Markers. Search KZbin for those key words or follow this link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp2tpIGbi9qUqKc Once you know what they look like, visit Findagrave.com and perform a Cemeteries search for you local county. Findagrave.com is very comprehensive so you can trust that more than likely EVERY cemetery in your county is listed there. Use the map feature to see the location of each cemetery. Cemeteries don’t have addresses, so you have to look at the map and determine how you’re going to get there by car. Then go visit a few cemeteries to see for yourself the condition of veteran headstones.

I carry the same veteran headstone cleaning kit everywhere I go, but I do not use D/2 or any other cleaning agent on bronze veteran grave markers. I use the other tools in my cleaning kit when cleaning a bronze veteran grave marker, including D/2 on the base stone, but I do not spray cleaner on the bronze marker. Can baking soda or vinegar be used with water ? In a diluted solution for cleaning the grave site ?

Where do you find the information about the veteran when you clean the headstones?

Just follow the clues provided by the headstone etchings. Findagrave.com, Ancestry.com, FOLD3.com, Newspapers.com, Google, Wikipedia.com. For Albert Bingham in this video, I even went to the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, DC to touch his etched name. You can take it as far as you feel moved to take it.
