Has Chevy done enough to impress a Toyota guy to jump ship? We bought the Truck of the year a 2018 Colorado ZR2 Diesel. In this video we take it off road and give you our first impressions!

Michael Justa - Really impressed so far. Long term reliability is my biggest question although I’ve had good luck w/GM as long as you don’t get too rough. I think the V6 is a great engine too (actually it’s probably the best option for most people) Funny about the shock skids😂 Thanks for watching!

A proper locker talker always makes for a great video. Great edits, sound( not covering the diesel with music!), camera presence, drone shots, vehicle feature review compared to other brand was great, and proper locker talk of course, I love this truck with the diesel, please show us all the mods as they come!

Hi guys, I subscribed because your comments show more objectivity and your viewers don't seem as "brandwashed" as some. Hope it stays that way and looking forward to watching your journey. My Tacoma is aging but I 'll wait for a couple of years and see what the midsize market has to offer...people like you definitely have some input into my final choice.
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We really appreciate it. Our goal is to give the good with the bad and hopefully it helps our viewer make better informed decisions as well as have a little fun along the way. I think you are in a great situation if you can wait and watch what the midsize market brings. That segment is really competitive right now and that will only make each manufacturer try to outdo each other. It's gonna be neat to see. Thanks again for joining us on this ride!

Well done. Long time Land Cruiser guy too, have had 2 60's and have had a built 80 for 17 years now. We compared the Tacoma and the Colorado and with the Colorado Duramax and have been loving it. Ours is a crew cab, long bed LT that we bought for a daily driver and doing truck stuff. We see 30-32mpg on the highway regularly and I even got 35 one time. The ZR2 wasn't out yet but the payload and towing were more important for us so it probably wouldn't have been ideal anyway. That said, this thing tows our travel trailer better than our 3/4 ton Suburban and gets 15mpg while doing it vs 9 for the Burb. So impressed. Stoked that Chevy had the nerve to bring a smart sized diesel to the market like we have been begging Toyota to do for years. This ZR2 is just icing on the cake and maybe could be the eventual replacement for our 80 series overland rig. Anyway, I see you have an 80 so looking forward to hearing more of your impressions along that frame of reference.
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
I love my 80 Series (my daily driver) but the ZR2 is sooo impressive! I get tired of the 10-14 mpg and small fuel tank on my 'Cruiser. That was a huge part of going diesel in the truck - I wanted some decent range when overlanding. I also love how diesels just smirk when you install options like bigger tires while the gassers really struggle. We plan to incorporate the 'Cruiser + our other off-road rigs into the videos in the future so stay tuned! Thanks for watching!

great video. ive been back and forth and have a 16 diesel z71 Colorado and was going to a trd pro but went to drive both and the zr2 is so much nicer riding and interior comfort . plus the locking front and rear. that said I too really am a Toyota person and I went Colorado 2 yrs ago and miss the off road and Toyota. After watching you tonight we made up our minds and trading this weekend on new zr2 diesel. Ive got 52k on the one a got and engine is great. Thanks and great video and hope to see many more.
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! We are very happy we chose the diesel. We are getting 20 mpg in TOWN! That's us doing the math not what the truck estimates. Some ZR2 guys I know who have the gas engine are getting closer to 15mpg. The ZR2 package is a game changer! They did so many things right with this truck.

@joshuatwhaley6 жыл бұрын
Great video you two. January of 2017 I had to trade in my Wrangler (big Jeep guy) because I needed a truck. I drove a Colorado 4x4 (not the cool one like yours), a Tacoma TRD off road, and a Frontier Pro4x. The Chevy was nice (but not top of the line), the Tacoma was vastly overrated (Extremely uncomfortable and very underwhelming in power), the Frontier was awesome, it had the luxury package with power heated leather - sunroof - nav - the whole 9 yards. It also sits on a Titan full Box frame something the others cannot claim having a full size frame. And here's the kicker, because even though it was brand new, it was a 16, so i got it for 32,500. A year later; I love it as a daily driver, I love it when we take it off road, and I love the strength of it as a workhorse. Anyway enjoy that ZR2, it is the coolest midsize on the road; well until the Ranger Raptor hits in 19 or 20, ha...

As I am retired, I find myself running errands, sometimes only driving five blocks or so to grab something to eat. And electric car would be more sensible. In working out the numbers, I discovered the EV lease payment, to include the upfront lease payment of $1500 or more (depending on brand/cost) would never make since when compared to cost of ownership. My paid off Jeep JK. As I average about $89 a month fuel... well, there ya go now. It is a 2012 MW3, with only 35,000 on her. The tires and brakes last years. I drive like an old man much of the time. As I would enjoy a Vespa GTS300 after doing the math on that scooter, the overall cost would cover six years of high California fuel cost alone remaining steadfast with the fuel guzzling jeep. If more folks wanted too, doing some math estimations, comparisons versus-emotional inner drive we Americans suffer from (YES-I was that guy too) We ALL would have a much better retirement portfolio well into our eldering years. Not every man and women can be a Jay Lenno. In truth, it was not to be.

I love the sound of the diesel sounds like a Singer sewing machine. Can’t wait to see your mods I think the ZR will make a great overlanding vehicle. I hope the reliability is up to par with the Toyota.
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
It does sound good! I think it will make a great overlanding rig too. We spent most of the weekend back at our favorite local off-road park and averaged over 13 mpg while rock crawling. Not baby stuff either. That kind of crawling usually gets single digit mpg from my other rigs. That kind of off-road fuel economy will be nice when overlanding on some far off trail. Toyota has set a pretty high bar for reliability. I'm concerned that the newer 3.5 V6 won't be as reliable as past Toyota engines. That's one of the reasons I went for the ZR2. If the 4.0 V6 in the 4runner was an option in the Taco I may have never strayed....but I'm happy I did! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I am 100% satisfied with my tacoma purchase. Its paid off, but i never even came close to being upside down on the loan. Ive had it for over 3 years now, and I can still get almost what I paid for it, if i sold it. And if it posted for sale, i'd be overrun with people wanting to buy it. Just sold my grams 2001 tacoma this week, for $2,000 over blue book value. These trucks are crazy. Thats a very comfortable feeling when you're dropping that much money.

I have the same truck but mine is a 2017. I installed a S&B cold air intake. It cured the turbo lag and increased my mpg's. Yesterday while coming home from work (124 miles there and back) I got 32.8 mpg. I was driving at 60 mph with the ac off. I absolutely love the truck and have had NO issues with it.
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
Yours is a ZR2 and got that mileage?! That's awesome!! My personal best was about 26 mpg but I was running 75+ on the interstate. I kind of hate to mess with aftermarket intake systems because of all the dust from being off-road but with those results I may have to give it a second look.
@scrimmy69696 жыл бұрын
Yes its a ZR2. I get around 25-26mpg also at that speed. I am also concerned about the dust also. S&B makes another air filter also that I believe will be better in dusty conditions. I am going to be purchasing that filter soon. It was well worth the money. I will upload a video to my channel later today with the fuel mileage. Take care. Jim

Loved the video. Been following on instagram as you modified and was dying to hear your feelings on the truck. Any plans to tune or delete it?
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've been dreaming of putting a tune on it! The torque is amazing but the little D-Max doesn't have a lot of oomph at higher speeds. I haven't decided which way to go yet because I don't want to affect warranty (truck has less than 5,000 miles) so it may be a while before I look for more performance. The power isn't bad, it's just not a hot-rod. I am NOT a fan of all the EGR, DPF etc etc etc on modern diesel engines but as long as those parts don't pose a reliability issue they will remain intact. Thanks for watching and commenting! Brooke and Alan yes I want one so bad but I'm scared for all the emission equipment killing reliability down the road. I drive my cars till the wells fall off. I'd rather that be at 300k then 30k miles 👍🏻

They have shock mount relocation kits that will elevate the problem with the low mounting point

I'm really interested in this truck but cant get pass the fact no push button start and the location of the rear shocks. Have you guys ran into any problems where the rear shocks are? Great videos by the way. My other option is a TRD Pro.

Nice video! I just got my diesel ZR2 and am wanting to take it on some trails soon. Where in Austin is that? I am in Hutto and found some not too far away in Marble Falls-ish area. Would love to meet up with y'all sometime!

my 80 series/LX450 has front and rear lockers... I've used the front locker as many times as I can count on both hands over the years. My larger question? How long will it last before it shakes and rattles apart? I' reserve my opinion until long term off road reports start coming in.

I love my Colorado Diesel. (lifted 33X12 R20's Spade Tuner, Exhaust, and CAI) BUT... for the price I paid for it... It is missing several little things. Power rear sliding window (really) AC seats (Yes I'm spoiled) Home Link (Garage door opener) Tow Mirror. (when I do tow)

While the skid plates are definitely beneficial, the factory shock plates are from the 2500. Far from weak.
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
We are not concerned about the shock mounts being weak, just the shocks themselves.

JD here. The ZR2 is slowly but consistently becoming my next choice of vehicle. But is a diesel a good choice for a daily driver? I'm not too concerned about the torque No real off-roading for me. I do a lot of driving (100,000 miles in 4 years) and really love the looks. It is an eye catcher. I been driving a Colorado as a work truck for 2 years and fell in love with it. LT? Z71? ZR2? Choices, choices, choices.

Do you think the rock sliders could be replaced with the z71 side step rails. I love the ZR2 but really wouldn't be hill and rock climbing so a side step makes more sence for an older guy like me

I am a Toyota guy. I had a 2013 Tacoma and a '99 Limited 4Runner. I have a '91 3.4 swapped 4Runner and a 2003 Limited with a V8. I love getting in to my 2003 and just driving. What I like about the twins from GM is that hopefully they're going to force Toyota to stop being complacent. They held the small truck market segment too long and have not been challenged to improve or innovate. They charge way too much for what you get because they can. They need a fire lit under their asses and become competitive again. They need to be knocked off their perch a little.

I agree and I think all this competition from GM and hopefully Ford (Ranger Raptor!) will force Toyota step it up. I'm excited to see what the future holds! Thanks for watching!

ZR2 is much better to live with on a day to day basis + it doesn't give up much to the Rubi off-road.

Have a GMC Canyon All Terrain Duramax. The torque is simply unmatched by anything in the class and really comes in handy in slow speed off roading. The fuel mileage is also nice even though the engine costs more. I can easily go 600+ miles on one tank if I hit cruise control at 70. I'm at 24,000 miles with no problems. Hope you take enjoy your truck as much as I enjoy mine.

I’m in LOVE with the torque! I’m used to stopping for fuel every 200 miles w/ my LX450 so I REALLY appreciate the added range. Thanks for watching!

I have a 200 series land cruiser with KO2's, and like your old land cruisers. Have you driven a 200 series off road? I wonder how the newer ones compare to the older ones? I know the rti scores are very good on the newer 200 with kdss, but the ground clearance is not quite as good as the older ones. I wish the 200 series had front and rear factory lockers. Crawl control is nice though, and the truck still performs well. I hope th zr2 holds up good for you. I still have an old 98 ranger 4x4 off road pkg that I used to go on tough off road adventures, and even with a limited slip rear it did very well where locked jeeps were going. The front and rear lockers should perform very well in the zr2.

How is the road noise when traveling on highway at speeds of 60+? I am looking into the ZR2 as both a daily and weekend fun!
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
It's pretty quiet. The tires do make a little noise but the cab is well insulated so the noise is barely noticeable. I have a lot of tire experience and feel that regular tire rotations will be required to keep tire wear in check. If tire wear gets out of hand (especially cupping in the tread) any tire will become loud. The off-road use of any truck may also require more frequent alignments if they've been run really hard. While the diesel is pretty loud at idle (as any proper diesel should) on the highway it barely makes a sound. It rarely revs over 2,000 rpm (and that takes a pretty big hill) Most of the time it just quietly cruises at 70+ without a care in the world. I'm confident the gas version is also quiet on mostly flat roads. Most modern gas engines like to rev to make power and if you hit a decent hill it's going to let you know it's working hard for you. I don't think you can go wrong with the ZR2 as a single do-it-all vehicle. It rides better than the Z71 on the road and destroys it off-road. I've never owned a vehicle that was so good at so many different things. Thanks for watching and good luck in your search!

I want this truck, but can’t understand for a vehicle purpose built for off roading, why did they hang the rear shock mounts so low? 🤷♂️

That's cool! I actually think the Toyota is a better looking truck but driving the ZR2 had me sold. I'm excited to see how Toyota responds to the new kid on the block! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@JohnDrivesAnything6 жыл бұрын
As a car guy my problem with Toyota is they lack passion sometimes. The Tacoma sells so well I'm sure Toyota will leave it alone because the know their fans are loyal. They wont make something insane for the sake of making anything insane. That being said I wish GM was the GM of the 90s That GM would of put a Corvette engine in the ZR2. Maybe if the Ranger Raptor has crazy power GM will put the ATS-V engine in the Colorado. 464 HP would be Sweet. I like Diesel but I only managed 70 MPH in the sand. Handled it with no problem at that speed.
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
I think you're right. I don't think Toyota will make any crazy changes but I don't think they need to. I think they haven't been challenged in such a long time they just left "good enough" alone. Interior comfort seems to be the biggest gripe I'm hearing. A better set of tires would do worlds of good for the TRD Pro but hopefully they don't stop there. A little horsepower war would be fun to see.....
@JohnDrivesAnything6 жыл бұрын
The car guy in me hates the fact they lack passion and they don't have a take everyone down mentality. It seems like Ford has that Mentality with the Raptor and I hope too see GM put the ATS-V engine in the Colorado because they are feeling competitive. The common sense in me says Toyota sells every Tacoma they make and in Southern California Dealers sell the TRD Pro for $50,000 all day long. So in Toyotas case why change it? Make as much profit as you can people will still buy the Tacoma no matter how good the Zr2 is and the Ranger Raptor might be. Supposedly Jeep is going to offer a Diesel in the Rubicon. If that's true I wonder if it's because a few Rubicon drivers went with the Zr2 because of the Diesel.

My employer bought Mercedes Diesel Sprinter vans...they are junk.The diesel engine is junk...hard to start in the cold...they had to add block heaters..and then there is the DEF fluid....fucking crap...burn gas...much easier. The ZR2 must be hard to steer with front diff locked...I would stay with yoda and crawl control.
@OGcottoncandyrandy6 жыл бұрын
I was in the market for the ZR2 or TRD Pro. Toyota won for me, more proven, more reliable, better value retention. Still gonna watch and see what y’all do to the baby dmax!
@brookeandalan65876 жыл бұрын
Those are great reasons to choose Toyota and I really struggled with the decision for those same reasons. For me it came down to interior comfort, powertrain choices and I really appreciate how GM went simple and gave us a couple of lockers and the ability to turn off all the electronic nannies so we can do the driving. Many people will argue that Crawl Control is better and in many cases it is (especially inexperienced drivers) but for me it's just a preference.....kinda like how some people like automatics and others like manuals. Thanks for watching!
