ZR2 vs. TRD Pro Climb Hype Mountain! Are They as Good as People Think? Part II | Edmunds

Edmunds continues its off-road journey in the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. In Part 1 we tested them in desert wash. Here, editors Dan Edmunds and Jason Kavanagh get some altitude, clambering to the rocky summit of a mountain that tests the trucks' limits. These two off-road-oriented midsize pickups are each impressive in their own right. But there can be only one winner.
Q: Aside from their off-road hardware, how does the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro differ from the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2?
A: The Tacoma has a more awkward driving position and a less sophisticated transmission, but its folding back seat and shallow-sided bed are more practical than those of the Colorado.
Q: What's Crawl Control?
A: Crawl Control is Toyota's name for a system that controls the power delivery and brakes to help find traction in extreme environments.
Q: What's so great about the Colorado ZR2's Multimatic dampers?
A: Compared to traditional dampers, Multimatic spool valve dampers have better fade resistance and less variation from damper to damper, and they allow for more precise damping values.

nice man. I really love the mid-size trucks, the Chevy is really nice.I'm always on the fence tho regarding which to buy...the mid or full size truck, the big thing for me is the back seat area, I like to have the storage and also the odd towing, like pulling a big fishing boat out of the water...that duramax would be a great option for that. how do you find the backseat room? enough space?

crawl control seems to work ok in sand but i can tell you from experience it doesnt work in snow when you need it
@rundownaxe
@rundownaxe 3 жыл бұрын
Sometimes in snow, even if all 4 tires get all the traction they can, it's just not enough. Want to know when my crawl control really impressed me? I have a weird driveway on an incline with a bit of a drop on one side. One day during winter, there was a good couple of inches of ice all over the ground and I had to get out. Everytime I tried to back up all 4 tires would start slipping and I would slowly slide towards the drop. I could not control the speed and the direction at the same time and I didn't think I could make it out without slamming into something at the bottom of the hill of sliding on the brakes into the drop. That one time, crawl control was amazing. Put in into the lowest setting and eased off the brakes. It started to slided like I did but the magic started. All 4 corners working individually to and the thing actually turned out of the slide and kept my speed low through the descent. It made ungodly noises and moved in ways I didn't think a truck could move. It works magic getting you down a slippery slope. It won't do shit if you are stuck beyond traction capability.

Thank you Dan for telling people the proper way to use lockers. I see so many media outlets just clicking them on at the first hint of dirt 'cause they are there and its obviously time for lockers or something. Especially with a front locker, if you leave that on all the time, you are going to break something...not to mention have a hell of a time steering.
@mikefoehr235
@mikefoehr235 6 жыл бұрын
I just wonder is a LSD front diff with crawl control better or dual lockers. I personally love Toyota as a brand and have a 2013 Tacoma TRD Sport. I think having the spare in the box like the GM is insane...renders your box useless more or less.
@PatrickRich
@PatrickRich 6 жыл бұрын
Mike Foehr depends. For crawling there is no substitute for lockers. That having been said both of these trucks are lousy crawlers on account of their length alone. I have front and rear lockers on my cruiser but truthfully when im touring the 2nd Gen Tacoma trd off road in the group goes everywhere I can with just a rear locker and ATRAC... Plus he can turn and still have traction management up front and be less likely to break something. As for an lsd and traction control... It's pretty effective provided it's better than a speed difference type and can "lock" without wheel spin. Army HMMWV didn't used to come with lockers, just high bias torsen lsds and they were amazing with a little left foot breaking. The raptor had this setup of a rear lockers and front torsen with traction control. It's pretty good.

It's an option to have the spare in the box, it comes mounted under the bed normally.
@hochhaul
@hochhaul 6 жыл бұрын
You're just plain misinformed if you think the front locker "is going to break something". The ZR2 only allows the front diff to lock while in 4LO. It's not lockable in 4HI and besides that, the front and rear diff are the same Dana setups used on the new Jeep Wrangler. It has more than enough strength. The CV axles, steering links, and steering rack are also upgraded parts on the ZR2. Keep defending that rusty Tacoma's famously weak rear diff until you're blue in the face, your claims that the ZR2 front locker "is just going to break something" doesn't hold even the slightest hint of merit.
@PatrickRich
@PatrickRich 6 жыл бұрын
hochhaul is hard to take your "it'll never break!" Seriously when you simultaneously think the Tacoma has some kind of glass differential. Which is it... They never break or they are super fragile? Look you can break either axle with abuse, and ifs front lockers are generally prone to failure more than solid front. Do me a favor and do a KZbin search for "jk Wrangler axle break" and tell me how many videos you find of indestructible Dana axles... Give me a break man. My locked front Toyota axle is at least as strong as any 4 of these axles, I can only engage it in low and I unlock it the second im done with it because in not an idiot and don't want to walk home.

Not taking anything away from the Taco....its a really good truck and has proven itself over the years....but they didn't really have ANYTHING positive to say about the ZR2. I think its pretty obvious they are biased towards the Toyota for whatever reason. The ZR2 has some really great tech that makes it the ultimate off road truck, and they hardly mentioned them. There are a lot of other videos, reviews, comparisons, etc. with these two trucks and the ZR2 usually comes out on top. Anyone agree or disagree?

Also don't take much stock in Consumer Reports. They have hated on the Taco for about 10 years. They don't like truck based vehicles. One reason why they love on the Honda so much. Modern off road oriented trucks are capable of way more then I thought they were right off the lot. I'm waiting for Chevy to update the ZR2 a bit. I'm currently in a F150 Lariat FX4 and I do miss having something a little more nimble, but having all the fancy bells and whistles in the F150 has spoiled me. I like the Tacos, but feel like they are way over priced for what you get. For that kind of money they should have a front locker and a better interior. Not having simple things like Android auto or apple play seems pretty dumb by today's standards. Even the Jeep JL has all of those things now and when the new Jeep Gladiator hits the market hopefully that drives competition and Toyota ups their game a bit.

The ZR2 rides way smoother in rough stuff. Can go places the Tacoma can't go. Has a way nicer interior with way better goodies and is way more comfortable. Yes the Toyota is going to last forever but that Chevy is built to last and I have gotten 350 thousand miles on a 95 full size Z71 truck once. I would buy the Chevy out of these two.

The Colorado is the best small or mid size truck GM has ever had but it is not as good a vehicle as the Tacoma. The test needs to come at 200k where the Tacoma will still be running strong and the Colorado may never make. Just saying.

They managed to feature the gimmicky crawl control feature yet didn't even show the ZR2's front locker being used. They didn't even activate Off-Road mode in the ZR2, which changes throttle response, ABS response, disables traction control, and changes stabilitrack calibrations.

If they would have put it in really hard courses or terrain u cant forget about that front locker too on the Colorado, while the Trd only has the rear... watched their other video comparing reg versions of these with the new ranger. Ford and Toyota both had open diffs but locking capability the Colorado didnt have that option.. while the ford and Toyota both had to use theirs on a certain part of the trail while rear tire was in the air and they were spinning, the Colorado has the limited slip/eaton locker in ther rear. It didnt have to stop and mash a button to get out it just kept goin while the one tire was in the air.. which was also spinning like a locker... so u may think I'm Chevy biased which I am but only to ford, I love Toyota and ram. Seemed they were way biased toward the Toyota. Especially part 1 of the 2 part series. Goin thru the desert at 45 the guys voice in the Tacoma was shaking while he was talking he was being rattled around so bad and the interior look like it was gonna come apart.meanwhile the Colorado looked smooth on the inside nothing moving around and the guys voice was t being shaken to death but somehow they gave that to the Toyota too... lol from all the options and real real world scenarios they would both do great but with wider stance better tires better shocks and ground clearance and front and back diff locks on this particular Colorado u cant tell me the Toyota would go where the Colorado does.. just my opinion from the vids and info given from the reviewer... thanks

Also dont forget they also said that one of the main reasons the trd flexes so much is bcuz from the front to the back of the cab has fully boxed frame... from there back it doesn't which they even said was weird for payload and trailering... I get it dont get me wrong but seems like a easy way out... box it all , up the payload, and do whatever else has to b done to get the flex ur so know for... I want a strong truck not just half strong truck... and no offense but the camera was on the Toyota SUV so it could get the angles of the Colorado goin up the hills with ease, just like the video starts out lol... just fun humor everyone domt take offense.. I'm just stating facts that were given to us during the videos.. the zr2 looks like chevys small version of the raptor... which doesn't even have an electric front locker.. they have their own version of one but u cant turn it on and off... it's like the eaton g80s chevys run but in the front... have a good one guys.. btw that would b a fun comparison to do... wide body zr2 diesel vs raptor ..!? Departure angles , low range speeds, rock crawling... I know it couldn't compete with all the hp of the raptor but for the slower stuff even the woops woiod b a fun video to watch.. closest thing to a raptor imo even though it's a mid size truck

Test drove a Tacoma TRD off road, at least I think that's what model it was. It was a step down below the pro.. anyway, I liked the truck but the truck feels like it has no power. I know it's a v6 but just seemed powerless. I think I'll wait and drive the ranger and see how it compares.

So what, you're going to take the trd pro because of throttle response (which can be tuned) and shock mounts? That's worth paying more for the TRD despite it not having a front locker (huge advantage), no rock sliders, inferior shocks, inferior tires, and inferior drivetrain both in HP and trans? Not to mention you could get a diesel in the ZR2. I like the TRD pro but the ZR2 is a way more competent truck off road both in pre running and technical four wheeling, there's no way around it. Thanks for the video regardless but your verdict on the trucks only make sense if you're a Toyota fanboy.

People go overboard with what tool is better. If you've got some place to go, then go. Most 4x4's could do that and honestly it doesn't really matter. Do you buy a brand new wrench and then take bolts out of stuff just to see how it works?

If anyone's going to quote reliability statistics at least know how those statistics are collected. JD power and Consumer reports are all involve short term sampling. Also if you're buying anything based purely off rankings, you may be disappointed.

vidurc You can't go wrong with either truck in a small, off road package that would be cost prohibited to replace on a base model. The Toyota is older but they have done many updates. Toyota has not invested in engine or transmission tech for everyday use might be noticeable, but not in this setting. You will pay the "Toyota Tax" for precieved reputation because not much has changed like the old Nissan Fronteir. But when Colorado/Canyon returned Toyota pushed up the sales at that time. They also have competition from the new Ranger which could eclipse all of these smaller trucks depending on how Ford wants to allocate F-150 sales as too selling vehicle. The Tacoma really has no competition from Tundra in sales as they are pretty much moot.

Norm T you can't go wrong typically buying new. If you're planning on holding on to a vehicle though that may change. Personally I buy to own and I own quite a few cars so long-term reliability is Paramount. All depends on the buyer. When it comes to long-term reliability I'd pick the Tacoma any day. All of my trucks and cars have gotten us over 200k at some point in their lives so that's been pretty nice.

All these guys with stats. lol nah man the taco has been around forever and Toyota has ruled the small truck market forever for a good reason. The Colorado is alright but the Toyota has the lineage and to me it just looks way better.

I'm currently driving a 2012 Ford F-150 4 door with a 6" lift and 35's. I've got 120,000 miles and only changed the water pump, nothing else. It's been a great truck. Back in 94 I bought a brand spanking new Toyota 4wd truck. The very next day after buying the Toyota, I get pulled over in town because I had no tail lights. It was a wiring issue. A couple weeks later the air conditioner quit working, had that fixed. About a month after, the windshield washer sprayers quit. Then the rear end started leaking. Later the starter went out. Then the rear end leaked again. Then the truck overheated and warped the heads on the motor. Luckily I had the extended warranty at that time. Then the wiring harness had to be replaced. a little time went by and the damn rear end started leaking AGAIN!!! I WAS DONE!! That was the biggest PIECE OF SHIT I ever owned!!! Also, the JACKASS that sold me my extended warranty gave me false information on the warranty. It didn't last as long as he said it was going to. I know not everyone has had the bad experience I had with Toyota but it does happen. They all will make a bad one from time to time. I'm thinking about trading my truck in soon and I am currently looking at the Colorado ZR2.

@s l That's his money. And he regrets buying a TDR PRO. He's going for the ZR2 BISON. I have a v6 zr2 basic. And it's funny how I get those toyotas out from the mud when they get stuck. Zr2 is the closest you can get for a Ford Raptor. Zr2 is 15 or 20 thousand dollars cheaper.

I did the same exact thing, a need to get what you want, BECAUSE YOU CAN. And if I get a few thousand less when selling, could care less. Why buy high grade hamburger when you can have steak. After driving a ZR2 diesel, would have paid more than I did and really liked the TRD but had to change directions. Whole different game. The ZR2 drives like a sports car on the road and it's like riding on a high end mattress on the trail. The ZR2 suspension soaks up big small and all bumps. Never been in a truck with those mannerisms before. The TRD was good but not great. Get compliments and asked questions about the ZR2 all the time, especially (does that thing really have a diesel) never happened in the TRD.

Love toyota of course, but man you really have to hand it to chevy for what they've done with the colorado. I do agree though a tacoma with the zr2's powertrain would be the way to go. Now if only nissan could make a serious pro-4x frontier.
