Absolutely superb story! Kudos to all involved in making this film, and thanks. I first cowboyed on the Fetcher Ranch north of Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 1959; this documentary really brought back some fine memories.

Love seeing Richard Farnsworth. He was such a great actor but a cowboy first! Wish he had more opportunities doing movies.

New Mexico is the land of the first cattle and horse drives, ranches, rodeos, vaqueros, mountain men, etc. It all started in 1598! By the time the Americans arrived in the 1800s the Nuevo Mexicanos had been ranching and cowboying for centuries! They were the best horsemen and ropers NM has ever seen! When the Americans arrived in the mid-1800s they took the New Mexicans' ranches and also their culture! William Becknell is credited with opening the Santa Fe Trail but the Indians and Spanish had been using it for centuries! Read Stewart Udalls' "The Inland Empire". I am a proud descendant of these early ranchers and vaqueros! Luciano Martinez

squawcreekkid correction, most people would not be able to endure it. It is a lifestyle that you have to have the heart to bare the hardships that come along with it.

It is true, the first cattle and cowboys to enter the US came into New Mexico. The Corrientes brought by the Spaniard explorers. Before the colonists arrived back east, the birth of the cattle industry had already taken place in New Mexico. It is also true that many land hungry unscrupulous folks took most of the land that the Spaniards had taken from the Native Americans.
