Me watching you guys in the forest in the middle of the night in Malaysia and then simultaneously realizing despite being critically endangered, there are probably tigers out there. Respect to you guys for really putting your lives on the line to do this. Beautiful snake and nice mini doc.

Outstanding footage of a truly remarkable snake. Eating other highly venomous elapids, it has evolved such a specialized and fast acting venom that it’s actually interesting for medical research, hopefully leading to better pain treatment.
@metalmamasue36802 ай бұрын
Yes ! I'm a chronic pain patient and lifelong reptile geek. I so hope their venom can help make a superior pain med that really works without the side effects and addictive/dependence potential of traditional meds.

Evolutionary development is fascinating. The defensive behavior of this species takes maximum advantage of its red tail. It blows my mind that this species has evolved in a way that favors that red tail coloration and defensive display. It’s also interesting that the mimic evolved with a red head but not the red tail. I wonder what the mimic species’ defense behavior is? Does it display it’s red head or have a different defensive behavior?

Great videography, as usual, I should add. I should also add that bands or band-like patterning are the most common aposematic configurations in snakes, so the striping seems all the more odd. I'm left with the conclusion, if I believe it, that the signal from this snake is "any serpent so bold in pattern and behavior must somehow be dangerous." That is the most general meaning of defensive display.

Yeah, a buddy of mine let himself be bitten by one it did nothing at all. So, fascinating. The Calliotoxin perhaps came about via point mutation thus the large glands could be leftovers from the older mass amounts of much less toxic venom. It would be interesting to study them to see if the venom glands shrink over time.

Wonder if any genetic testing has been done on the Night Adders? Let's see they're the only "Night" Adder I'm aware of that has round pupils. So is actually probably more diurnal or "Day" Adder. Casus looks much more like a Colubrid mimic type than Adder. The reverse is true with the Death Adder with slit pupil's vs Elapid round pupils. Genetics cuts through all that.

Everything about this animal is spectacular! And fascinating! I wonder how it appears to mammalian predators with their limited colour vision. I wonder if the coloration is evolved to warn avian predators or other snakes. Is it known whether they are immune from the toxins of other elapids?

A snake which is not camouflaged as Rattelsnake or other terrible ones like the Taipan - I like that blue shining snake so we come very well along :-)
@GEIST004 ай бұрын
Actively foraging in plain sight, actually seemingly colored to increase visibility. That strongly suggests the coloration is aposematic. But aposematic coloration conventionally involves bold red, orange, or yellow, and black patterning. So I am puzzled by the addition in this species of the blue and black striping which stands out much more than the orange and black. What do you guys make of this?
@GEIST004 ай бұрын
Of course, it is also possible the striping is not aposematic. Paint that snake's head black and one might observed snake predators of the area treat it like just another harmless snake.

Beautiful animal and curious adaptation. So why does it need giant venom glands like a King Cobra? Perhaps its venom isn't that strong against whatever its prey item is? Don't know. King Cobras have similar issues their venom is not particularly deadly in small amounts but the volume of at least 28 grams just overwhelms any animals body to process that much venom even Elephants.
