My Grandfather used to use Derwent, when he passed years ago I was lucky enough to inherit his tin of what remained of his pencils. I've been terrified to use them, so I keep them in a case and I look at them; and miss him. I mentioned this to a friend of mine a couple of years back, a couple of days after they appeared with a nearly intact tin of Derwents. She herself had been given the old tin, however she is not an artist and the tin sat in the corner of her 'attic' for years gathering dust. She gave me her tin, because she wanted me to enjoy the art my Grandfather wanted me to, all the while keeping his to cherish. :) My first set of pencils, not purchased for school, but for choice, was also from my Grandparents, and it too was a tin (small) of Derwent pencils. To this day X decades later, they are still one of my favourite brands. :) When I was in the UK I was able to go near the OG namesake, but was unable to visit the building, sadly. :'( BTW - your little woodland friends are gorgeous!!! thank you for sharing them, I will have to download them and see what I can do :)

As a teacher I appreciate your “think aloud” style. You tell and show us what you’re actually considering as you set a palette and other artistic objectives for the piece you are working on, you tell and show how you use other art for inspiration. You walk us through how you assess your tools systematically with swatching of the pencils on the paper you are using. You model for us accepting midway problems like when you stopped early on to say you were concerned about too many colors. I love how you model the thinking strategies and “habits of mind” you employ! If you are interested in reading about this type teaching, check out the book Visible Thinking. There are some cool charts in there you and Steve may find really affirming as well as inspiring for more teaching techniques.

I am just in the beginning of the video, but I have mostly thought of Derwent as putting out pencils specifically to compete with other popular pencils. Coloursoft is used to fight Prismacolor Premier Procolour is used to fight Polychromos Lightfast is used to fight Luminance Inktense is admittedly its own type of thing that they seem to have a lot of success with. Then they have some somewhat novelty pencils: Drawing is just kind of its own thing. Perhaps that's why the range of pencils is so small. Graphitint. They have the obligatory watercolor pencils, which are quite poor in my optinion, compared with high end competitors like Albrecht Durer and Museum Aquarelle.

Hi Jennifer, believe it or not, I do not have any Derwent pencils in my collections, but with the holidays fast approaching, I think my secret Santa may be gifting me some. Thank you for the awesome tutorials you always give. I could watch you all day and night and never get tired. Your passion for creativity is so refreshing and it comes through my PC monitor. I think even if someone wasn't a hobbyist of color, you would make them want to try. I order many of your products and I love them. I'm a Bliss Partner as well. I love supporting other artists. You're one of my favs. What shocks me is why you don't have more followers? You should have close to a million and most certainly you should have as many "thumbs up" as you have views. I will never understand social media! But anyhoo, keep up the great work! I love watching you and Steve. You two are a nice power couple! Keep those awesome videos coming!

Fabulous video thank you so much. I always use build your own tin from Derwent it’s been an absolute game changer for me! The pencils are a bit discounted so it makes it good value for buying them open stock as we all know we have our favourite pencils that we use! But it’s one of the best ideas ever and I noticed that they have just started doing a build your own 24 tin 🙌🏾🙌🏾 I’d definitely recommend it

Oh man, this is so helpful. I have just put all my Derwents in one case. I am now slightly less confused, but I think I need to put a cheat sheet in the case with them. I have discovered, thanks to you, that I love colored pencils on tan toned paper. Black is okay, too, but I would never use it.

It is so weird that I was just wondering what the difference is between some of the Derwent colored pencils. So I come to you tube and 10 hours ago you load this video! Usually when I’m looking for information on a subject I always find old videos. So this was a happy 😊 surprise. Thank you!

I have two cases with all my Derwents in them, one holds the 100 Lightfast and the 72 Inktense pencils, with room to fit in the watercolour ones (I have an original set of Derwent watercolours from the 1990s), then I have a separate case which has the Graphitint, Metallic, Drawing and Coloured Charcoal sets in it). I use my Graphitint pencils with my Derwent Drawing and both Lightfast and Inktense on both Colouring Heaven colouring books and also on Clairefontaine PaintOn mixed media paper. I've found that putting the Graphitint down first and washing it out and then using the others on top was the best way. Inktense pencils work fabulously as the base layer with all the other pencils on top. I find the Metallics are the oddest to mix which is why I tend to only use them on their own right at the end. But it's also easier when you're using the full sets, so I think you might have had less issues with the full range of colours, especially in the greens :)

Hi, I built my own tins at derwent. The experience for me was excellent! How i placed them in the basket is how they appear in the tin. I bought from 3 ranges, artist (35), drawing (10) and graphic(3). I went for 24 tin option, which comes packed as two tins of 12 for a total of 48 pencils + blender. I am planning another order using the same custom tin option.

The Derwent drawing are my favorites. I wish they had more colors. Today my 12 lightfast set should arrive, I wanted to test them after hearing people say they’re similar to the drawing in feel. I enjoy the graphitint too. I’d like to test Inktense but I’m not sure how they’ll work with my style but other illustrators ( I Doberman fairy tale book illustrations for Essinger) raved about them. Thank you for all the in depth research you do.

Thank you so much for all the Derwent info, links and the demo! Your videos are always so inspiring and educational. I am not a colorist but a nature journaler who chooses to use colored pencils rather than watercolor in my sketchbook. I have Graphitint which I used exclusively until I bought the Drawing pencils. They are my favorite collection! The colors all go so well with each other and they are great for sketching landscapes, animals, birds...all things nature.. But with both sets I was missing a yellow/orange (bird beaks) and a true red (woodpecker markings) so I bought a few Lightfast pencils. I love them all. This video reminded me that I was given the metallic set for Christmas and haven't used them yet. Its time to make that right!

Thanks for the Derwent love. I enjoy them so much! I have the full set of ProColours, 36 Coloursoft, and 24 Inktense. The ProColours are difficult for me to use; they are very hard and fiddly. I think it requires skill and more practice to get the full effect. The pigments are absolutely glorious, though. I'm planning to get the rest of the Coloursoft soon. I think I want to just buy the full set of Inktense, but that's for later. I'm afraid to even sample the Lightfast, because I'm afraid I'll love them and they're too expensive for me!

Dear Jennifer, do you have a comparison video between Prism premier and Coloursoft of Derwent. I have a old set (more than 15 years I guess) of coloursoft and im thinking about Prismacolor pencils. From the prisma I have a small portraitset. I seem to struggle with the coloursoft and I’m wondering if it is the age of the pencils.

Have you wver use Walnut Hollow color pencils? No one seems to know them. I found them in a thrift store and they are oil and incredibly soft and also you can do from really light to very intense color with one pencil. Blends pretty well.

The racoon page misfired on one link but it downloaded fine when I came at it from another source...the regu...well, not exactly sure how I got there but it wasn't the link from the email, or FB? Not sure which it was anymore. It was great to see the half way point side by side with the finished project. The shading lifted his leaf laurel beautifully and gave it such wonderful dimension. I'm going to check into the metallic pencils again. I had a set of them and gave them away a few years ago...they wouldn't lay down any color and scratched on the surface of the paper...horrible mess. The activated colors were pathetic also. I'm thinking the new set I see that has six pans of color along with the 12 pencils may be a nice set. I have the drawing pencils, the graphitint pencils and the 12 pan set also...I really need to play with them now. This little guy might be just the temptation to get me going. Thanks for sharing your skills with us :)

When you were picking the colours at the beginning I wondered why you weren't choosing any from the Inktense range, which has better matches, as far as I can tell from the monitor. I know they're not watercolour, but they're watersoluble.
