But I noticed my grandparents even favored him more because he’s a male. Like he holds more honor. But moving to the US I was then considered “light skin/ red bone” and treated differently by others because I’m considered to be most preferred by the guys. I lost friends because of that. They would say “oh they only like you because you’re lighter or your hair is long and curly”. I hated it!!! Because my friends were beautiful black women that I absolutely admired and felt I was even on there level of style and grace. Definitely not trying to play or highlight myself as victim. Darshanay Johnson everybody loved Susie and I hated the lack of racial balance on the show (like why couldn’t we get regular cousins and stuff of hers along with everyone else) but her positive presence with no harsh stereotypes was definitely a major plus. I love Martin one of my fav shows ..but even As a kid I didn’t like that Martin would go in on Pam that hard and it would make me uncomfortable when he would say she looked like an animal, talked about her hair being fake and her not being able to find a man as a haha to her face because he had a light skin woman. Never sat well with me...like how black men now talk about how ugly we are and how we are this and that because they have a trophy light skin woman.

I was maybe a preteen and it bothered me too. I never liked bullying. But now I realized so many black men truly feel this way due to the conditioning of many generations including Martin’s show.

Hold on. I disagree with Living Single! Maxine's character was an intelligent attorney and the only friend who maintained her own residence. Her "aggression" toward men was more of her knowing what she wanted and not letting men or society dictate how she was supposed to behave as a woman. She also often offered sound advice to her friends. She was always a supportive person (remember when Sinclair quit her job as Khadijah's secretary, and Maxine filled in, or when she helped Khadijah, Regine & Sinclair win the $1500 settlement in the Full Court Press episode). Regine's character was very classy and she brought much cultural education to her household (knowledge of French cuisine & the language, knowledge of high fashion, knowing how to dress for any occasion without showing too much skin, knowing how to set a dinner table and which side the silverware goes on). She definitely brought some class and knowledge to her roommate's lives, similar to what Kyle brought to Overton's world. Yvette Lee Bowser really did a lovely job of depicting Blacks in a positive light and taking us outside of stereotypes🙌🏾
@VLM1233 жыл бұрын
Agreed!! All the women were greatly represented on that show. It was especially important to see that two plus-size Black woman lead characters (Queen Latifah and Kim Coles) were also very desirable and successful. Khadijah owned her own magazine and could pull any man she wanted to, and Synclaire, though she eventually ended up with Overton (John Henton) was also desired and had a fledgling acting career! There aren't many, if any, shows which portray that today.

Remember when Celia premiered news outlets made it such a big deal that that for the first time black characters were the protagonist in a non-slave themed story. Don't get me wrong I do thinks it was about time, but they made it seem like, "look how far we've come along". Which to me sounded kinda condescending. Also, in Latin culture its not just if you have African features but also if your featured lean more towards indigenous. Roma for example had a huge controversy because of the Lead's features. Some mexican actors were upset that that was how mexicans would be represented. There was also "Maria Isabel" telenovela in the 90's where the protagonist was a woman from an indigenous decent. But she was played by Adela Noriega who doesn't have indigenous features. But they were able to get a full assemble of good actors with said features to play the indigenous people (Huicholes). You know, the side characters. 🙄

E M. Unfortunately the actress was and still is not a positive role model for dark skinned black women. It was the character that displayed that part you liked. If they felt there was a probably with the original actress they should have kept the casting for someone that at least looked similar to the original actress. That’s the thing that baffles me with shows that switch actors. They can do so well at casting children version of original actors but fall so far behind when replacing an actor in the same timeframe. I know the industry isn’t that lacking where they can’t find an appropriate actor to not only act the part, but also look it. I also don’t agree with the notion that changing how the character acted was a critical part in making a peaceful working environment for the cast and crew.

Milano Martin I think in real life she was just bitter bc they kicked her off of the show bc she wanted to get paid more. She had asked Will to ask the producers if they could raise her pay since he had a lot more influence. He wouldn’t do it because basically it wasn’t his problem.

On one side white shows are not going to represent black people then you got black shows that hold on to stereotypes for dear life 😑 we can’t even count on ourselves 🤦🏾♀️

Dark skin Aunt Viv gave me Claire Huxtable realness! I love that she was unapologetically herself and had personality for days. She slayed that role! No disrespect to the light skinned Aunt Viv but she was kinda forgettable...almost like a trophy wife....good to look at but not much else. Thank you for making this!

Amen!! Thats the truth! Dark skinned Aunt Viv gave me life!! The lighter one was a lil too submissive for me. The original aunt Viv gave me strong, independent, making sure blacks knew where they came from

Diamante Monae I agree. Nikki got a lot of male attention she just specifically wanted the professor. I didn’t like how every woman the professor wanted instead of Nikki was always lighter and skinnier than her. Like significantly smaller and lighter as if to say a woman dark and plus sized could never attain a man like the professor.

@Sadness i i can imagine that it does hurt if you don't see people who look like you and go through similar things like you being represented in media, the shows you like, the movies you like... that can really hurt your self esteem.

She has said herself that at the time she didn’t like/get along with Will or any of the cast. The cast said she was very problematic when it came to filming the show. When they had a reunion no one hit her up when everyone asked why multiple cast members said she’s just not a nice person.
