Undertones are so important, thank you for making this video! I learned so much from it. Ironically I kind of stumbled across an undertone discovery last week when I was experimenting with skin tones and five pencils. I got two separate skin tones out of them just by switching the order a bit and using the blush lightly as the undertone in one and the yellower cream as the undertone in the other. Same pencils two separate skin tones. I was so happy!

I am new to your channel and Love, Love, Love it. I just watched this video (from 4 months ago) yesterday. I was so excited to get home and try out your technique. I have been practicing skintones and color for about a year and never got the knack of it. I've followed along with many colorist, but couldn't quite get it. I was getting discouraged. I didn't know about undertones and you are the first I could find, that to explain it and how it works in coloring. As I said, went home and try it out along side of the video. I didn't do it in Serene (too scary), but a pdf download. It came out great. I can't wait to try to make some recipes of my own. Thank you so much. You are a wonderful instructor and your private students are so lucky to have you. You know this means I have to go back and watch all of your video. Again, thank you.

This was a wonderful step by step instruction video on doing skin tones in a picture. I have remained a beginner for about 10 years, because I don't know how to make up a color palette. I know when colors look good together and when they don't, but just coming up with colors to use together out of thin air is a skill I don't seem to have. In any case, I don't remember anyone even mentioning anything about an undertone when starting to color skin. Actually, this is the first instruction video on how to color skin that I have ever seen. After viewing your video, many more on the subject seem to be all over the place. I hope I can find the video you do that comes after this one. Thank you so much for giving such clear instructions.

That hand position also forces you to use less pressure. I find myself having to change position often, depending on whether I need a light even coat, I'm shading, outlining, etc. If I hold it like a writing utensil? I tend to apply the most pressure in that position. Even when I try to back off.

Are you familiar of a concept from Star Trek called "Warp Speed?" Well I feel like you have just put me into Warp Speed in regard to coloring skin tones! Don't know if I was even prepared for Light Speed at this point, but with your adept teaching skills you have launched me into space. For so long I was oh so happy with the tried, but true Light Peach from Prismacolor (PC 927). I recently have started to use FINE*TEC Skin Tone pencils from Germany, but haven't been too happy with the results. Why? Wrong technique, of course! In this one tutorial the pencils now seem to "work!" LOL Thanks for giving me the know how to use the correct recipes…..

At the point I added the Terra Cotta I should have started to contour the face. The Terra Cotta was sort of an optional color. If you liked the red you can use Terra Cotta from the prisma set. I was just looking for a dark pencil. I am going to continue with a contour and highlight video that will help. I just have a few more to get out there before I start filming it.

Lori I'm a beginner thank you so much. My question is, is that top to bottom line stroke what is always use when coloring faces
@ColorMyWorld6 жыл бұрын
When I do faces I do the bottom layer as a tapered stroke. Then second is circular and then tapered. Back and forth so the skin is very smooth. I will do the tapered stroke on the forehead going down. On the cheeks I go from the outside toward the nose. I'll be doing a face contour video soon where I go though all this in great detail.

@sabrinasiler15696 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I'm jumping ahead of your advice but I have to ask. Where does blues and purples play into the effect of the skin color? Would that be considered an undertone color also, I don't mean for the whole face, just along the outer edges or would that be considered a shadow. That's where I get confused. Thank you for another awesome video. Xx
@ColorMyWorld6 жыл бұрын
No that's a pretty good question. The purple would be an undertone, but not a dark purple or they will appear as if they were turning blue LOL. I have never personally used purple as an undertone, but I would imagine grey lavendar would work in special cases. Blue on the other hand would be a shadow color. Specifically indigo blue. I use that all the time. I wouldn't use it with yellow undertones because blue mixed with yellow is going to blend into a weird looking green. I would go with the warm greys. I would choose the warm greys because of the pinks in the flesh tones are warm. This is just my thoughts and there would be no rules. It's just the way my mind works out colors.
@699jude6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lori for this video. I know indigo blue is your go-to colour, but I remember another video by someone else doing skin tones and they used indigo blue to contour the face. Unlike you, they didn't lay down a lot of undertones first and I couldn't help feeling that the face had a really unhealthy pallor at the finish, so I've since avoided it in portraits. Another point, could you list the colour numbers in the Prismacolor Portrait set? Amazon only shows a photo of the top layer, so the bottom twelve is a complete mystery, and the Prismacolor website is less than informative.
@ColorMyWorld6 жыл бұрын
I have to get the skin stuff up on my website. I am going live soon and will get it all up tonight or tomorrow. I thought I did it, but it was hair color I put up. I don't contour with blue. I shadow with blue depending on the undertone. I haven't done that part yet. So I agree, blue is in the danger zone for skin color, but when done right it's really good. I have over done the blue and turned skin green myself too.
@yazosoyo3 жыл бұрын
I just took a course on coloring realistic skin, for the deep dark skin, we used grayed lavender as an undertone, then the actual skin tone (I used chocolate) then a deep purple tone... crazy right? then a bunch other unexpected colors. Dark skin tones are HARD to achieve!

Actually the 24 prismacolor pencils for portrait that have 2 very different prices are not the same. If u notice that the cheap on say "by stranfan" and the real ones say "by prismacolor" I made the mistake of buying the knockoff and it was like using crayola pencils. The colors were off by tone and shade and the texture on the paper was very rough. There were several other things that were off as well. I contacted prismacolor and they are investigating the matter.
