Listens to 35 minutes of BtBaM and needs to take a nap. Legend.

My first listen was weird too. I did *not* like growling vocals at the time. But Prequel to the Sequel was in Rock Band 2, and its guitars were so damn intricate, and the style was so eclectic, it got me curious. The album itself was a blur of metal to me, some good headbanging riffs that transition away much too quickly, and some moments of striking beauty that suggested to me there was an actual "purpose" behind the structures. Sun of Nothing, with the psychedelic section, hooked me. That was the song I took away from me on my first listen. And that is the key: there is going to be too much on an album for you to "get" or "agree with" on a first listen alone. You have to find the moments that stick with you, and you come back to the album to listen to those. At first. Sooner or later, you start wanting to know how that One Good Part *fits into* the rest of the song, so you listen to the whole song, or even the next one. Every new listen is more familiar, and you start finding other Good Moments that stick with you, and you start being able to *predict* how the eclectic changes will go. So you come back more, and you have more to grab this time. And this just repeats. You build a collection of memories that make the song familiar. This is the process for learning to like *any* piece of media, in fact. Even the "worst" ones. But in BtBaM it feels like they deliberately want you to confront the process. They want you to get used to it, to come to their music *for* it. After all, there's plenty of music out there that isn't like this, that gives you the goods right on first listen, and if you're in the mood for that kind of song, there's no shortage of places to go for it. BtBaM is there when you're feeling.. different. Someone has to make "this" kind of music. And they clearly love what they do. So yeah. Sun of Nothing. That tends to be the song that gets its hooks in new listeners. Ants of the Sky too. They are baffling epics.

Very well said! My introduction to this band was because of Rock Band haha. The drumming in Obfuscation was soooo technical and unique, and I thought Prequel had one of the best intro's to any song ever. I had to check out more. But it wasn't until about a decade later when Colors 2 came out that I started to deep-dive into this band. Now they are my favorite band, alongside Rush.

This is a truly revolutionary album. I still think Parallax (EP) + parallax 2 (Album) is the best album they've done so far. I'd give Parallax 2 a full listen.

The Great Misdirect is my favorite BTBAM album. Every album is unique and incredible in its own way. Love every one of them, they're near impossible to rank honestly. Hope you enjoyed your listen, just watched your Colors 2 reaction and spit my drink out at your reaction to prehistory 😂. Hope you enjoy man, my favorite band by far, but I couldn't get into them for a long time.

Saying every song sounds the same is literally insane to me. I respect your opinion, I'm not trying to insult, but I completely fail to comprehend how all the songs sound the same in any capacity.

They all follow a theme. If you listen closely, you can hear it. It's like a dog on a leash or the day's temperature based on climate; it'll take its freedom but is tethered to a theme. In the end, this album delivers. On repeat, the album never ends.

The very last chord progression is the same as the "chorus" in sun of nothing; so many details to take in. This album only gets better the more you dig in, but I understand they don't appeal to everyone because they're so unconventional. The first time I listened to them, I couldn't really hear all the distinctions in their parts; I had to develop my ear more to hear everything. That doesn't mean you'll automatically like it if you can see all the details, it's all a matter of taste. Music elitism is annoying because tastes are mostly subjective. The fact that so many different types of music exist, should be evidence of considerable variation in tastes. Yet, many people will say this band isn't "real" music because they use such unique and unexpected phrasing/transitions, which clearly violate the "rules" of music. And other people will say you're dumb if you don't "get" their music. The fact is, we can pick out distinctions in sound(pitch, timbre, amplitude, etc.) due to our evolution, and because of that, there is a wide range of sounds we can enjoy.

You should go in order of albums after this, their sound does start to bend more. The next one is The Great Misdirect. Different. Then the Parallax 1 EP and Parallax 2 are way different than anything else you’ve listened to by them. I think you’d like them. Some of their albums don’t mesh lyrically song to song, but the Parallax’s are one long story. Same with Coma Ecliptic after that, which is even more different than anything else. Colors 2 was like they took everything they’ve done and the kitchen sink and mixed it up, which I liked but not for everyone ;)

At the end of informal gluttony (the track i rarely revisit) you say "the songs sound similar, I'm not sure I'll like the rest of the album" ohhh just you wait i thought. Sun of Nothing, Ants, and Prequel about to epically rock your core

NGL I listen to this album so much I watch reactions to it just to spice it up. Lol so yes. I watched this whole fucking thing just for an excuse to listen to the whole album from start to finish for the 300th time ❤ thank you for your service. Do the live album for parallax 2 if you haven't. They have a full live movie of them playing it. It's a true masterpiece in my opinion. They did colors live as well

Colors sounds RADICALLY different than their previous 3 albums. And every album post colors is very different than the previous. I am a HUGE Deftones fan but BTBAM are leaps and bounds a more talented and interesting band.
