I enjoyed Colosseum for the first time during an open-air in Germany in the 70'ies: real innovation in Jazz-Rock. Old guys (like me) and still good music !

MAN - am I glad I 'stumbled' across this! Magnifico! Can you be-LIEVE a bunch of oldsters making music like that?
@EnosEverything6 жыл бұрын
They weren't oldsters when they began... They have honed their considerable skills over a long period that dates back to around 1967...I suggest you check out the early COLOSSEUM albums from the late 60's to early 70's,,, Then you will hear just what a great band they were... You'll hear the great, late sax player DICK HECKSTALL - SMITH... His replacement in the band is the equally wonderful BARBARA THOMPSON who is married to the superb drummer and spokesperson for the group JON HISEMAN... VALENTYNE SUITE is an awesome album- check that one out at least.

Great solo from Thompson, quite amazing since it looked like she was having some Parkinson's side effects. Not easy, lost my step mother to Parkinson's disease and she had quite a battle during her 20 year stuggle.

Very nice aspirational saxophone solo (the star of the show)
@wayneblanchard976 жыл бұрын
The saxophonist is Barbara Thompson, who in addition to her own bands including Parphernalia, was the wife of the drummer here, Jon Hiseman, who died recently due to complications arising from a brain tumour removal. Thompson has for many years suffered the progressive debilitations of Parkisons, which causes the body to shake, which is why she is seated in the performance. She took over when original sax man Dick Heckstall-Smith died. Hiseman, if you're not aware of him, took over the drum seat in the Graham Bond Organisation when Ginger Baker left to form Cream; followed Mitch Mitchell in Georgie Fame's Blue Flames when Mitch went to Hendrix; and pioneered jazz 'n' blues with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (on the 'Bare Wires' album) with two other gents with whom he would form Colosseum, arguably the first jazz-rock band.

This band has a funky groove which Cream and Jack Bruce didn't have
@wayneblanchard976 жыл бұрын
True, Hiseman was much more syncopated and fluid than Baker. Here is the original recording by Bruce. Though Hiseman was on Bruce's debut album (and 'Things We Like' with Dick Heckstall-Smith and John McLaughlin - like Bruce and Hiseman, also ex-Graham Bond Organisation), Soft Machine's John Marshall is heard here, possibly because Hiseman was busy with Colosseum at the time.kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYe7f5prhsl4qpI
@stevenkrichbaum93615 жыл бұрын
What ludicrous nonsense. There are plenty of funky grooves in a multitude of Bruce's recorded output. And, predictably, some trash-talking internet troll has to drag Ginger Baker down to his level. Baker's playing is the embodiment of fluidity.

Understand what you mean, but he was never in Colosseum; in Jacks band though. Chris is an enigma as a guitar player to me; his main interest seems to be in ales and like 50's r&r, but he sorta stars in pub-rock/half-punk and is hired by avant-garde and half-psych bands; and doing sessions for Nick Mason/Carla Bley sounding like David Gilmour. And doing interesting instrumental solo albums.
