Why do we work?
Sometimes we think of work as part of the curse in Genesis 3. However, the Bible teaches us that work is a wonderful gift from God. While work is discussed in Genesis 3, that is not the first time we read about work in the Bible. We are introduced to work when we are introduced to God. Genesis 1 begins with a description of God working, creating, and caring for all that He makes. Our God is a working God. And He finds joy and fulfillment in His work.
God gave us the gift of work in the Garden of Eden, before the first sin. God gave us work as a good gift to bring us dignity, purpose, and fulfillment in life. Work is a part of the sacred image of God that makes us who we are.
Work is also an opportunity to be partners with God and one another in something good, productive, and redemptive. God is a working God, but He is also a relational God. His work is about relationships. Certainly, God could do everything He wants to do faster and better if He did it all by Himself. But He chose to create us in His image and invite us into a partnership with Him to work together with Him. The work of God is about relationships. And all of our work is also about relationships. That’s the message we see at the end of Colossians chapter 3.
This is a sermon based on Colossians 3:22 - 4:1. I preached this message at the Minnehaha Church of Christ in Vancouver Washington on Sunday, August 2, 2020.
