I saw this in 8bitguy's video and bought the computer right that instant. This is mindblowing, I'm coding the heck out of it when it comes.

This will be a basic revival! the critical aspect now is to form a community around it... I myself am sticking to the cmm1 to program because I am more into hardware control at the moment, but I can see myself buying a cmm2 one day as an end user.

What this maximite is doing is just amazing. Given that this demo was entirely written in BASIC, and with this computer doing such incredible graphics, I have no more words to say. This is just remarkable!

One thing I love about this demo is the fact it actually feels like a demo from the late 90's. Great job on nailing that aesthetic.

@Komaru Naegi First of all, hello fellow DGR fan. Secondly, I can agree. I can barely code in GML language, so I wouldn't even try coding in BASIC, but for those who can, they can make extremely good works in the limited space of the computers they use. That's the reason why I love demos in general.

Wow! Excellent work. I watched 8-Bit Guy's video about the CMM2 the other day which is why this got recommended to me now. It's nice to see the whole demo. As someone whose programming is far too casual to learn anything else than BASIC, which I first learnt 35 years ago, I am probably going to get one of these little computers one day soon to play around with. I see you also have other retro computing stuff on your channel, so I am definitely subscribing, and hopefully your channel with grow even more. It also reminds me I need to make more retro computing content on my channel too. I have made a few videos dedicated to the Commodore 64, but I have ideas for many more.

I used to have a C64, and where my Dad worked at the time (a museum), there were a lot of computer nerds in their creative department. During summer break I would go hang out with them, and they used to send me home with all sorts of demos. I miss this stuff!

This type of stuff, the demoscene, will never die. Today exist yet many groups that bring us incredible things in our beloved 8-bit and 16-bit machines. I believe that a platform/computer/console will not die until have users that support it. The CMM2 bring to me good memories, as I saying around, for me, it´s something like "retro-future".
@BuckeyeStormsProductions4 жыл бұрын
@@MXRetroDev Retro-future. Great! I am planning on getting one of these. My kids are into electronics stuff (as most kids are these days) but almost all the electronics they interact with are programmed by someone else. I remember as a kid first learning BASIC, then messing around with some assembly language stuff. Back then, your devices could be, "hacked," easier. I even coded a BASIC program which could use inputs on the C64, and made a basic weather station using that, and some sensors sourced from a local electronics store. EDIT: I'd like to get my kids into developing their own stuff, and just, "playing around," with their electronics. The hands on learning is often best. I've done some Arduino stuff, but I know BASIC really well, and could more easily help them with that, I think.

What I can see of it is fantastic! However, I get an index out of bounds in DEMO_RACING.INC line 238. I'm running MMBasic 5.06.00b5. I changed N from 1200 to 1300 in line 21 and now the demo completes but I don't know why it was necessary when the demo ran without the change on your machine.

I will update it to run in the last firmware revisions because as the renderer of the firmware is totally redone from scratch, it gives much more performance and the software isn't write to support it correctly. Soon I will not only support the new firmware as the new draw commands to create new effects on this demo.

I´m fixing somethings in this demo to run correctly on the 480Mhz CPU and with the most recent version of the firmware that added some new commands and a little speed up. All these things together "broke" some parts of the demo, which proved to me that my routines were not so strict timed correctly how I guessed. Soon as possible I will publish the source code of the demo.

I'm wondering if this demo could've been possible on a 486 or newer cpu with a gus.
@MXRetroDev3 жыл бұрын
If it ported to PC in a compiled language, maybe even a 386 could run it. But if using a interpreted language as the original, even to a 486 CPU can be hard to run it. The CMM2 have very optimized commands for graphics and sound, keeping only the program logic as the main part to be interpreted, which makes the task easier to the CPU.

I know, this is a beta (but thanks for the advice!). The earth is almost completely flat and I used h few tricks to make an illusion since you do not see to it constantly (reading the text). In the final version of the demo, I will use another algorithm to make the earth more convincing and in the car, racing will have trees and other objects in zooming in real-time.

Yes, only BASIC when programming on the main editor, but you can use some C routines compiling for ARM CPU and inserting on your program, they are called CSUBs. There are some limitations because you must follow the firmware architecture.

All demo is in 640x400 with 16-bit color. This is a beta, maybe in other version I use 8-bit with dedicated palette for each part, with this I have no doubt that gives a gain of 50% of performance.
