The surface in combination with the technique has a massive effect on coloured pencil performance

If you use a Tripod Grip where you rest your thumb on the pencil instead of on your index finger, you’ll find that putting pressure on a pencil won’t hurt. This is about how you hold the Irojiten. Later with the Polychromos you do hold the pencil with a basic tripod grip. Look back, you’ll see what I mean. I love all 3 of the pencils btw. The Irojiten I layer with on Bristol smooth. Yes, it takes 3x as long as Prismacolors but Irojiten are about getting zen with layering and Prismas give a fast result and are masters in blending. 😊 Just my 2 cents…

I tried a few of the Irojitens and the Luminance and I 100% agree with you. Irojitens are beautifully packaged, but so hard to work with. Luminance are supposed to be "the best" but I did not enjoy them at all. Scratchy and dry lay-down on several types of paper. And the color selection seemed too predictable, nothing interesting to my eye. I regret buying them, but I guess you never know what a product is like until you try it.

it's great you are doing a comprehensive comparison of different brands. It would be useful to know the paper type you are using, maybe try several types of paper.

That would be like a 3 hours video... 🤣 The info for this sketchbook book is down below, that’s the paper I am intending to use for my coloured pencils illustrative bonanza. 😁

Mmm... only one of my luminance is gritty and that is because if the pigment type. All my others are super creamy 🙂

The Irojiten are harder and are good for details and layering. Also, trying them on different paper will give different results.

I tried my Irojiten on different papers, not getting much difference in result.

Alyona, I would keep the Irojiten boxes, chuck out the pencils, and line the boxes to make then into watercolour palettes!

That’s a great idea!! 😁

Capuut Mortum... in fact one of the most useful and used, for me at least..!

If you change your paper, you will find polychromos just glide through and easy to blend.

You are right, I used actually a Polychromos today and it felt very smooth I even thought to myself, that was much smoother than I remember them from previous usage. 😊🧡
