I’m absolutely amazed by the quality of Uniqlo - both for their cashmere jumpers and for the merino wool jumpers. The price is amazing, especially in sale. They’re thick, soft and look amazing after many washes. I can’t say I look after them a lot and wear them constantly. My worst experience was Npeal. Very poor quality, leaving fluff on everything and everyone, completely overpriced. John Lewis is hit and miss, some pieces got very thin but the others are keeping well and long. Jaeger and Eric Bompard are the best brands for me. Thank you very much for all your content, very informative and concise as always 👍

I always have questions in mind regarding emphasis on the softness of a clothing item. Does it make a softer item better quality of a less soft item? How do you know the softness of a cashmere sweater is due to high quality of the material used or by adding chemicals to soften the fabric?

Hi Eileen, How do you store your cashmere pieces to avoid them being eaten by moths? I’ve had some lovely jumpers ruined with holes from moth damage!

Longtime cashmere sweater owner here. Always make sure your cashmere sweaters are scrupulously clean before storing out of season. I wash mine at home or for more delicate pieces, I take them to my local dry cleaners before storage. Secondly, look into using a moth repellent in your storage area like cedar cubes/balls, essential oil sachets, etc. You can also purchase moth traps, although I've never tried them and don't know how well they work. Hope this helps!

@@Alesanascreamokid Totally agree 👍 Uniqlo was delivering great quality for good price up to 2018. Ather that something bad happened. They have gradually limited using natural fabrics to 20 % of thier production and decreased significantly on quality as well. Now it is all “ plastic fantastic” and cheap crap. Even the cashmere dropped in quality so drastically that my jumper form 2015 🤣 looks better now, than the one bought in 2022 😢

The difference in stitch size can also simply mean they used a larger needle size, yarn weight & needle size can also make a big difference in if the finished item will be warmer or cooler.

Lands End brand from the U.S. makes very good heavy weight cashmere. They also have multiple sales throughout the year. So far I have been happy. LE is web only. They were originally a catalog company specializing in winter wear. I would recommend for extreme cold and larger sizes including xxl and above.

I would absolutely second Lands End for cashmere basics in the US. I've owned some of my LE cashmere for over a decade and still it looks good. Also, their size range is second to none. If you buy on sale or clearance, you can easily get a cashmere sweater from them for less than $100.

I got the uniqlo crew neck cashmere sweater in the US, priced at $99. It is super uncomfortable (not soft and makes me feel ichy). As a comparison, I used to have cashmere pieces from Theory and Club Monaco back in 2018, those ones were much better. I also had wool sweaters from Arizia in 2018, and those ones feel much more comfortable. I haven't checked out those brands lately, so I don't know about their qualities right now.

Thank you for being honest. I find M&S cashmere not good quality. I have few bed socks from the White Company and other brands, if you compare them to the M&S ones, the latter do not even feel like cashmere!

A lot of clothing companies chemically soften and condition their cashmere before they sell, so it feels soft and fluffy in store but once you wash away the conditioners it’s as soft anymore, I think j that can be what happened to the M&S sweaters. About the fluffiness of sweater, it’s not actually the best thing. Fluffiness means the cashmere has a “halo” of fluff around the yarn, and that is the result of short cashmere hairs. Those shorter hairs are prone to being pulled out of the thread when moving around in your sweaters and are the main cause of excessive pilling (all cashmere pill but some pill ridiculously).

Agua cashmere is Bloomingdale’s store brand…Persanal I don’t think their quantity are the best , usually they have year end sale. For the price point they are still decent. I love Club Monaco’s cashmere, they are not only have a decent quality also the design are good, every once and while they have sale as well.

The quality of Uniqlo, John Lewis and M&S has gone down significantly in the last couple of years. My new ones from last year are pulling horribly and getting stiffer not softer unlike those that are 5 plus years old.

I have a Club Monaco chunky knit cashmere that I bought 7 or 8 years ago that has held up really well and it's honestly as soft and fluffy as my Loro Piana baby cashmere. I was genuinely surprised.

M&S cashmere is awful quality, it pills in my experience and I have had issues with John Lewis. My recommendations are Pringle, Johnston’s of Elgin, Joseph, Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Prada, 360 Harrods own brand and N peal is very good for the money. Very cheap cashmere is a false economy and I proper cashmere can last forever if cared for. As an aside, really good cashmere often feels stiff like wool.
