I have actually used the supergranulating paints on coloring book paper (I used to do full on watercolor so I had them in my collection). They do best applied wet on wet paper, that is how you get them to "break" into the various colors. If you lay them down concentrated onto dry paper they just look like a solid color. It also helps to add some plain water to force backruns (also known as blossoms or cauliflowers) where the water pushes the heavier pigment around while it's wet. Just a tip to help. This is obviously hard on plain unsized paper, but I've put them down on super thin crayola coloring book paper and while it buckled like crazy it did work, so its possible. Another tip.. supergranulating paints are simply convenience mixtures of standard granulating pigments, marked up to twice the price. You can buy a collection of single pigment paints and mix them to your hearts content, and save a LOT of money doing so while also creating a ton more colors, many of which are actually more beautiful IMO. For example you don't see any lighter colors in their collection, but mixing say cerulean blue, titanium buff, or potters pink makes gorgeous pastel tones that still granulate...amazing for things like sand or birds eggs. Of course the granulating paints can be used alone as well so you get double your value. You can also add granulating paints to standard watercolors and get separation as well... that is how brands like Daniel Smith and Van Gogh make many of their "mars" or "dusk" colors, or colors like "moonglow" or "rose of ultramarine". Let me know if you want a suggestions for pigments or brands. You can mix pan paints together on a palette for use, or you can go with a tube paint and actually mix them into an empty pan and let them dry to have them ready to go if you find that more convenient.

Thank you so much for the info, I appreciate the effort and time you have taken to inform me! I get a bit stressed with wet on wet technique in colouring book paper as the paper buckles like crazy and I feel out of control and dread the pilling. I have seen granulating medium, so do you just add that to your standard watercolour paints, then add water and just mix them? Does that make them into granulating paints?
@waymire01 Жыл бұрын
@@ColouringwithK Yep, wet watercolor is very low on actual control. It won't pill though unless you are rough with your brush, just lay it down gently and get out. You can drop water or more pigment with a gentle touch. Don't try to do anything else to it until it's 100% dry and the paper is hard again. Using a proper watercolor brush helps too, they are very soft. It's going to buckle, no getting away from that with unsized paper. Just try to control the pigment the best you can, a damp wiped brush will lsuck up puddles if needed. Let it dry then close the book and weight it down for a couple of days, this will flatten it out for the most part. Granulating medium is a whole other thing.. it's supposed to increase the granulation or force it in pigments that don't do it naturally. It's hit or miss in my experience. You can add it to your clean water for your brush, or add a drop to a puddle of diluted paint. Granulating paints are a feature of that particular pigment, a natural characteristic. Watercolor is all about pigments.. real watercolor paint (vs cheap paint made with dyes) is nothing but pigment and binder so every pigment has it's own characteristics and reacts to other pigments in it's own unique way. This can include staining, transparency/opacity, granulation (when the pigment gathers into clumps as it dries forming texture), toxicity, etc. You should be able to google for a list of common granulating pigments. Also this characteristic is typically labelled on color charts for the brand or store. You can also check the labeling for your schminke supergranulating paints, they list the pigments. They have common names but it's the codes you want to look for, that is their "true" name, and will tell you what you are getting regardless of what a brand names it's color. For example PBK11 is mars or lunar black, a highly granulating black. PBR11 is a similar pigment in brown. PB29 is french ultramarine, a granulating deep blue. Buff titanium is PW6:1, it's an unbleached titanium dioxide (like a creamy tan) which granulates. These are just a few examples. When you use one granulating color, you get a mix of it's color and the white of the page. When you mix two you get clumps of each, and a base tone that is the two hues combined. If you mix a granulating color with a non granulating color you get the base tone of the two mixed, and clumps of the granulating color. You can see just how many combinations are possible. It's tons of fun to just play with watercolor paints to see what happens.

The Neenah card stock - does it take neocolors 2 and Derwent Inktense, please? How lovely and thoughtful of your student 🙏
@waymire01 Жыл бұрын
I've used inktense on Neenah, but I use the bristol vellum which has more tooth (I actually use the back side which is smoother but still more tooth than the regular cardstock), it works fine. I use either a water brush or Tombow blender so not a ton of water. Inktense isn't watercolor but it is a water medium, generally tooth on the paper makes the paint sit more evenly, hot press (smooth paper) is wonderful for detail work but harder to get a smooth wash out of. Completely depends on the result you are looking for. The biggest issue with water media and home printing is your ink, most inkjet is dye based and water soluble. I have a printer with pigment based inkjet which is better, but laser is the most waterproof.
@ColouringwithK Жыл бұрын
I cannot remover if I used Inktense on it or Neo-colour. I would e-exact it would be ok as long as you don’t flood the paper, it’s not going to be as good as of you used watercolour or mixed media paper. The Neenah card stock is like an overall all round paper for mediums but I think watercolour paper is best for water colouring mediums (I find mixed media paper is good too, and it’s a bit cheaper than watercolour paper)

I believe Spectrum Noir is owned by the UK Crafter's Companion company. Plus Crafter's Companion/Spectrum Noir makes their own ink refills for the Soectrum Noir Classiques/Illustrator alcohol markers and none of my Spectrum Noir Illustrator alcohol markers work fine meaning the ink is juicy for me. Maybe you just have a defective set of the Spectrum Noir Illustrator refillable alcohol markers.

Hi thanks i really enjoy your videos and i did the stencil and crayon one you showed it worked great, where you rub back. I got a little enthusiastic and bought more and tried paint, but I keep getting the paint going under the stencil…..I tried sponge, etc but all it did was soak up heaps of paint and made a hug mess…do you have any tips or trick - what is the best sort of paint and so on…thank you so much for your videos
@waymire01 Жыл бұрын
For paint you need something with some body, like acrylic, and a proper stencil brush. A stencil brush is flat at the top and rather stiff so it doesn't soak up the paint. You apply the paint to a palette (I use foam plates so I can just toss it after, but you can use a ceramic plate and soak it in hot water directly after and get the paint off for reuse). You tap the brush into the paint bristle down and kind of tap away from the paint so you create a thin layer to work from. Then tap the brush over the stencil until it creates a solid layer, you can also feather it out or blend colors together. This keeps the paint from running under your stencil. Be sure to clean your stencil/brush immediately after.
@Chroniccolourist Жыл бұрын
@@waymire01 thank you !!!:)
@ColouringwithK Жыл бұрын
I don’t use paint with my stencils as I get it everywhere too, I mean I’d suggest to use a sponge but you already tried that. How about using one of those distress ink sponges attached to the wooden applicator. You could wipe off excess paint and then uses that? I personally use distress inks or gel crayons applied with the blending brushes on a palette with my stencils as it works much better and is not very messy at all

NEVER EVER put the little brush protectors that they are packaged in. Re-applying them over and over will ruin them. Clean them without touching the bottom and either keep them brush up in a cup, or horizontally.
