“use my brain in a different way” that’s a brilliant way to look at art and crafts! Please do not judge yourself for how you use materials - it’s all good, it’s about enjoying the process. I’m still watching….but have to comment as I watch otherwise I forget what I want to say 😊 Comprehensive review Connie, well done! I think you confirmed what we already thought about the various papers but it’s great to see them used and compared side by side. I feel that every colouring book has its pros and cons and their preferred medium (and even brand). That is what is so frustrating and leads to us having huge collections of pencils and supplies. Thanks for doing a fabulous test and review.

Art and crafts definitely force me to use my brain differently! :) It's funny - lots of other people probably feel relaxed while doing colouring or crafts and find it easy but would feel panicky at having to solve math problems or balance a chemical equation. Those last things are relaxing and fun for me - it's the creative stuff that's hard and stressful! :D But hard and stressful in a good way, if you know what I mean. :) Glad you enjoyed the review! And you're right - I think that's why there's such a plethora of art materials and papers, whether it be materials for colouring or drawing and papers in colouring books or sketch pads. It's so important to match the right tool with the right paper - it can make the experience much less frustrating (although it can also be frustrating to have to FIND those matches - I hear ya :)). Always great to have you chime in!

I feel validated - I buy very few Amazon books and only if I order something from Amazon Japan. I love using water media in these. Interestingly, I find that water based markers work really well there, I can blend them straight on paper even in fairly large areas. Maybe it's different with Pitt pens, something to do with India ink. They are not the same as regular water based or watercolour markers, from what I know. Of course I might be utterly wrong here😂 it's so cool to see you scientific blind test approach - love it!

So glad you enjoyed it! :) The water-based markers and the Pitt Pens did feel nice on the paper! The Pitt Pens just did a weird, speckle-y thing when I tried to blend them - but that could have been totally user error on my part. ;) :) Thanks so much for chiming in with your experiences!

I've heard others say the same, water based markers blend out better on the Japanese paper with or without water.

Great job. I'll still hold out for books that are known to publish with quality paper and stitched with hardcovers. I look for sales etc. I'm happy to see that R J Hampton is upping his book quality his illustrations are really nice.

The books from illustrators like Hanna Karlzon and Maria Trolle do have nice paper, don't they? :) I don't have any of the hardcover R.J. Hampson books yet to compare the paper but I'll hopefully get one soon. :) Thanks for stopping by!

@carolesauter4205 We definitely don't get artist-grade paper in colouring books (usually :)). Thanks for chiming in!

I must add my thanks ; wow what a lot of work !! Interesting that the Japan paper won ; I really wish we could use our prime memberships for all the amazons ( as shopping to Canada is brutal , as you know ) Now you go relax and enjoy your own colouring ❤

Wouldn't that be great if our Prime memberships covered free shipping from all countries?? :) Ah well - we can dream. :) So glad you enjoyed it and yes - I'm off colouring other things now. :)

You're very welcome! Yup - if you have Amazon-published books that you really love, it's probably worth it to order a bunch of them from Amazon Japan all at once (it saves on the shipping :)). Glad you enjoyed it! :)

I've found a lot of paper and print quality differences just in ordering several Amz. printed books that have come from different states in the US. I wish they had some way of enforcing some sort of uniform quality control, at least in each individual country. Great video!

So glad you enjoyed the video! I've heard others say the same thing - that there are quality differences in books printed in different places in the States. It must be so frustrating for you guys! Comparable quality between printing factories would definitely be a good thing! :)

Thank you so much for doing this. I like the illustrations but I just can’t get around the paper quality. I have the US version so now I can get Japan version to try.

Thank you for the hard work, I know how much it is and how boring to do the same thing over and over, as I had previously done a similar test of a ton of watercolor papers. Am I correct in my recollection.. this is exactly the same order they came out in the paper/ink quality comparison?

You're very welcome! It was repetitive but also became kind of "zen" after awhile. :) In the original video, I had the UK Germany (printed in Poland) book as #1 and the UK Japan book as a very close #2 based on paper thickness - the UK Japan paper is different than any others that I looked at and is thinner (but has unique properties wrt water-based media). In this video, I put the UK Japan book at #1 and the UK Germany book at #2. I think, based on both video, that books from either of those countries are excellent choices. If someone wants to use a lot of water-based media, though, the UK Japan one will be better. :)

I feel like there's no consistency at all with the US books. Even when they're printed in the same place you may get okay paper you may not.

Nothing to do with the book, but why I love Hampton.. relatively normal shelves with relatively normal stuff.. and a random multi-eyed squid in a jar. Just makes me laugh when I find the crazy stuff. I noticed Mr. Fogerty's boat (major fail not naming him Mr. Frogerty IMO) is named "cheese" in French lol. I can just imagine frog boy flipping through a book and thinking "that's fancy" and having no idea what it actually means.
