George VI was a truly great man who though not born to ascend the throne, did so and graced it. His perseverance through the war helped win it for the Allies.

I think Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother played a huge role in his perseverance as well. Supporting him, being his strength and enduring everything their country had been through during the war by his side.

@@thatchoirgirl94 Absolutely, always smiling and upbeat even after being bombed themselves. Looking back I can see why she resented Wallis Simpson but I wish I could've told her to see Simpson as a blessing for the Allies by taking the wrong man off the throne and allowing his younger brother to stand against the enemy during WWII. Can you imagine the possible outcome had Edward VIII stayed as king? The swastika would've flown over Buckingham Palace and they'd be speaking German. George VI was the ancient "king-sacrifice" to save Britain and with it Western Civilisation. What do you think?
@bundesautobahn7
@bundesautobahn7 Жыл бұрын
@@thatchoirgirl94 I guess behind a strong man, there's a strong woman around. Yes, Queen Elizabeth has been one of his pillars along with his daughters. He was basically a King against his will, but eventually mastered his task with steadfast sense of duty and by just being there for his people in their darkest of moments. Something that his heiress presumptive, Princess Elizabeth, has definitely inherited from her father and displayed in over 70 years as Queen. Everything that happened may have taken a toll on his physical health, but in his mind, his sense of duty towards his people, as well as his love towards them, was unrivaled at the time. That's why he was so respected and beloved.
@JCaroleClarke
@JCaroleClarke Жыл бұрын
@@bundesautobahn7 Considering the toll exacted upon the British people in WWI, the people of that island alone would have rejected any German take-over and gotten rid of Edward VIII. His personal selfishness and lack of self-awareness as to his duty would have ended any attempt to link up with the Nazis. And as for Germany itself - they voted Hitler in, they would've had to remove him. Kaiser Wilhelm was outdated, not part of the more modern world.

If you add up the reigns that started in the 20th Century (from Edward Vll) the sum of them is only about 75% of the present Queen's reign. Only her Grandfather George V had a substantial reign of more than 25 years.

King George VI was an incredible king despite the situation in which he had ascended to the throne unfortunately it was too much and he died far too young. You can see a lot of George VI in Queen Elizabeth II however and thusly has made sure that his soul is not forgotten. May God rest the King's soul and God save the Queen.

It at first appears that the present Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, was not present at this ceremony. She was there, but appears only at the end of the Pathé News film at 4:41 to the left of Queen Mary and can be seen descending the steps. Princess Margaret was focussed on rather more by the newsreel editors! The Duke of Edinburgh was not (he was serving in the Royal Navy in 1950).
