King Constantine II of Greece has died aged 82. The last King of Greece, Constantine ascended to the throne in 1964, but was forced to flee the country following a military coup in April 1967. The Monarchy was formally abolished in Greece a few years later, on 1 June 1973.
Here, Constantine II is seen at the wedding of his son and heir, Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece, to Marie-Chantal Miller. The wedding was also attended by Constantine II's second cousin and close friend, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, as well Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. As well as being Charles' second cousin, Constantine II was also godfather to Charles' first son, Prince William. Constantine II spent many years of his exile in living in Hampstead Garden Suburb in London.

If I remember correctly there was an unusual controversy about this wedding ceremony. Under British law weddings are only valid if they're conducted in English. The next day the bride and groom had a small civil ceremony in English to make their wedding legally valid. Even if you're married in London in front of the Queen, you're marriage is still invalid unless the priest uses English.

@@user-cq1rm7rp2q Giorgos, *you* are taking offence certainly but you are a single Greek, not the embodiment of the country. There are many Greeks who voted the other way in that rigged referendum, and there are many who would vote differently if one were held today. There is a big difference between your being offended and James being offensive. By the way, you are probably right that there will never be kings in Greece again. That's sad, because your politicians let you down every single time.
@user-cq1rm7rp2q

@@steelcrown7130 In the referendum of 1974 Greek people voted 69% against the monarchy. In 2023 if we make a referendum again the 80% will be against the monarchy, because the young people doesn't want an anachronistic institution to a modern country. So when i have the same opionion with the devastating majority of our people, yes i am a sample. That's what you said it's true, we have a huge problem with our politicians and our economy and because of that we don't want an unemployed and useless king to pay for his palaces and his family. If you truly believe that a king or a queen can make the difference for their countries above of the goverments you have a serious problem (and you watch a lot Game of Thrones). Wish of everyone is every country to be exempted from this awful institution and people stop pay for the luxurious lifes of some families. Fortunately, the samples of the new people are very positive and even the beautiful country of Great Britain i believe that in the next decades will escape from this institution.
@steelcrown7130
@steelcrown7130 Жыл бұрын
@@user-cq1rm7rp2q Hi Giorgos (I am Maurice, by the way), there is one very true statement in your response - you are a sample. Fine, as long as we stick with that - whether 80% agree with you or not, that other 20% are still Greek. I did already know exactly how many voted in 1974 by the way - I watched it on the international news, and I realised even then (I was 14) what a mistake Greece had made. Yes I am afraid I *do* believe that kings make a positive difference: Britain has dreadful politicians but an OK king (and they had a magnificent Queen), who symbolically keeps the politicians from misbehaving too much. My country also has a king (I wonder if you can guess which country?) and we voted relatively recently to keep our monarchy, but I don't know whether it was mainly because we have such awful politicians or not - because we do have SHOCKING politicians! Sorry, but despite the cheap shot, I have never watched Game of Thrones and I do not have a serious problem, I just know what works constitutionally, and the countries in the top tier of prosperity, stability and human development are mainly monarchies.

Harold Windsor's provocative boast [ in his book 'Spare' ] of the number of his 'kills' in Afghanistan so increased the 'threat levels' against his father the new King, and his brother the Prince of Wales, that they were STRONGLY advised by the Foreign office, not to travel to Athens. Had they done so the increased danger to the innumerable Royals present would have been a MAJOR headache to the already embarrassed Greek authorities, and the amount of additional security/publicity would have completely eclipsed the obsequies for the late King. So the King sent his beloved sister, the Princess Royal to [discreetly] represent him, and Prince William asked his cousin, Lady Gabriella Kington to do the same for him. The Greek and British Royal families are incredibly 'close knit', and no doubt it a source of intense regret 'all round'.

I remember when the King married the Danish Princess and they had to leave Greece. He was a very nice man fair and democratic in his thinking well educated. His children in spite of the difficulties well balanced and healthy. Will it be a private funeral ? They lived in London for many years. One documentary shows them visiting his house and garden in Greece that his family had purchased with their private money but was confiscated and abandoned by the government. Wild looking and returning to nature.

Possibly it's was the liturgical rite being used. For example the ancient Melkite rite ,very similar to Greek rite,uses liturgy spoken in Aramaic and their wedding s involve the crowns being encircled either over the bridegroom & bride heads 3x,as was shown in this wedding. Part of the eastern orthodox traditions shared in various Christian expressions faiths, dating from earlier centuries. Thats a fairly streamlined explanation. 🤗
