Baraka is a 1992 American art film directed by Ron Fricke. Fricke also served as the cinematographer on Koyaanisqatsi (a film often compared to Baraka). Photographed in the 70 mm format, Baraka is the first film ever restored and scanned at 8K resolution. A documentary film with no narrative or voice-over, Baraka explores themes via a compilation of natural events, human activities and technological phenomena. The film was shot in 24 countries on six continents over 14 months. Baraka is a Sufi word meaning a blessing, or the breath, or the essence of life, from which the evolutionary process unfolds. In Islam, Baraka generally represents a force or quality emanating from God and capable of transmission to objects or human beings. In Judaism, Baraka refers to a ceremonial blessing.
Samsara is a 2011 American non-narrative documentary film composed of international imagery directed by Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi, 1982, Baraka, 1992) and produced by Mark Magidson (Baraka). Filmed over five years in 25 countries, Samsara was output straight to digital. After premiering at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival, Samsara received a limited release in August 2012. Samsara is an Indian Sanskrit word meaning 'wandering' or 'world'. In eastern religion, Samsara denotes the idea of rebirth and the cyclical nature of all existence. The concept of Samsara is sometimes referred to with terms or phrases such as transmigration, karmic cycle, reincarnation, and 'cycle of aimless drifting, wandering or mundane existence'.
