I have to thank you Dustin. You brought back my love for historical guns. I got a reproduction Walker Colt for my 50th birthday and just a few months ago I purchased an original 1860 Army Colt manufactured in 1861 and was used in the Civil War. It’s in great shape and I could fire it…if I wanted to. 😉

Dustin beautiful collection. I personally like the 51 navys looks a little more then the 61. But the 61 is still a very beautiful revolver. Funny you like the blue more then brass. Truth is brass is not what 90% of the civilian sold colts looked like new. The brass was silver plated. Every cap and ball colt i own. from my dragoon to my 49 pocket all have traces of silver plating still on the brass. All my navys had silver plated brass as well and they fought in the civil war. So in the past most looked silver not brass. Also another reason i like uberti more then pietta. Ubertis size shape and there parts are extremely close to original colts. So close a lot of parts will fit or can be easily be made to fit originals.. Pietta wont even come close. Dont get me wrong i do like pietta. But uberti is closer to originals... Cheers

Hi Dustin, yes, different nipples that don't cause so much blowback may help, but I had the stuck cap debris issue as well and solved it slightly differently. If you look at the hammer face, you'll see the slot for resting the hammer between chambers engaging the pins in the cylinder is cut very sharp, and the lower portion of the hammer face has twin 90° angles which are very sharp as well, whose inner portion work literally like a table fork to stick into the cap's soft copper. Just take a diamond file or fine (300> grit) stone and lightly sand the _inner_ edges of the slot and inner angles, rounding them. Disassemblying the hammer from the revolver makes this much easier. Do many light passes rather than a few heavy ones: you want to deburr the edges and make them slightly (a few thousandths) round. This will prevent the copper cap from sticking into the hammer. I usually shoot 20 grains of N°2 or N°3 Swiss powder in my 1851 Navy with round ball and stopped having this annoying issue (whcih gets even more annoying when the stuck copper shard falls off while cocking the hammer and falls into the lockwork forcing you to disassemble the whole trigger mechanism...) You can obviously apply both solutions and be even more confident the issue won't present itself. Have fun.

I was always mystified by the Army’s request for an 8” barrel for the 1860, since it seems to make little difference. However, the previous Army pistols were the 1842 single shot percussion pistols that were exactly 14” in total length. With that added 1/2 inch, the 1860 is exactly 14” long, which might have meant the same saddle holsters could have been issued or it could have made it handle and balance more like the single shot guns.

In your opinion was it a good fighting handgun, or would you say the extra power of the 1860 made it superior, or was their enough difference to make a difference? This is of course only compared to firearms of the same era, obviously later firearms were superior such as the Colt 1873, and the Remington 1875, and others of that era.

That plunger only shoved the ball 1/4 of a inch in the cylinder. And with only 17grains you are not compressing the charge enough! Yes, it works clearly. But, with that same amount of charge you need a wad before, ball. 20grains is the least amount that is safe to use without a wad! With a 20 grain charge you will compress the charge enough. Just do the measuring and see yourself. Using a conical bullet 17 gr. Will compress enough but, not a ball. Great video!
